Right next to El Fenix
When the dust clears, Meso Maya will finally open in old Luna's Tortilla Factory
Nearly three years after taking over the space, Meso Maya will finally open its second branch in the old Luna's Tortilla Factory on McKinney Avenue. A construction crew is working on the space next door to El Fenix, and banners say that it's "coming in December."
This puts two siblings next-door to each other. Mike Karns' Firebird Restaurant Group, which opened Meso Maya in North Dallas last year, bought the El Fenix chain in 2008.
This puts two siblings next-door to each other. Mike Karns' Firebird Restaurant Group, which opened Meso Maya in North Dallas last year, bought the El Fenix chain in 2008.
Karns did not return calls, but an employee at the Preston-Forest location said that the menus at both would be nearly identical.
"It's the same food," he said. And they'll be making their own tortillas just as they do in North Dallas.
A staffer at El Fenix said that they weren't worried about another Mexican restaurant opening up next door and taking away their customers, because it's "a different kind of place."
"But we're related, so of course we're excited," she said.
The restaurant's opening is targeted for the beginning of December. The staffer said the exact date wasn't available, other than the fact that it would definitely be open by the middle of the month.
"We have to be open for the holidays," she said.
