Stars and stilettos align at FGI annual Fashion and Lifestyle Awards gala
Fashionistas were out in full force at the annual Fashion and Lifestyle Awards presented by Fashion Group International (FGI) of Dallas. Dubbed “Night of Stars,” the gala was held in the Grand Pavilion at the Trade Mart in Dallas Market Center.
“There are many reasons this year’s awards are special,” said Maxine Trowbridge, co-chair of the event, along with Neiman Marcus’ Chuck Steelman.
“This is the first year that we are awarding the Shelly Musselman Design Award to a local fashion student. And Nha Khanh, who won the top achievement award four years ago at FGI Career Day, which allowed her to go to Paris and train in haute couture techniques, is being honored as a Rising Star tonight. It’s come full circle.”
Accomplished designer Lela Rose flew in from New York to receive a Career Achievement Award in fashion design. “I hope that doesn’t mean they are wanting me to retire,” joked Rose. “It’s really such an honor to have people from my hometown embrace me in such a way. I feel really lucky.”
Guests got a taste of the designer’s resort and spring collections — inspired by artist Jim Hodges — which will start appearing in the designer’s namesake boutique in Highland Park Village next month.
Guests such as Heidi and Bill Dillon, Renee Rouleau, Elisa and Stephen Summers, Jim Duran, D’Andra Simmons, and Mina Chang joined the evening’s “Fashion Police” — who were styled by NorthPark Center for the opening runway show — Julia Andalman, Robyn Chauvin, Dallas Dillon, Shay Geyer, Gina Ginsburg, Norma Johnson, Hanh Merriman, Toni Munoz-Hunt, Ken Power, Elizabeth Showers and Michael Wilson.
NorthPark Center’s fashion and public relations director, Victoria Snee, served as the evening’s glamorous emcee, dressed in Roberto Cavalli. Nha Khanh Nguyen (fashion design), Bret Slater (fine art), Beth Dotolo and Carolina Gentry (interior design), Angela Scott (accessory design), and Alex Remington (fine art photography) were recognized as Rising Stars; Terri Provencal (media), Sue Wade (lifetime achievement) and Lela Rose (fashion design) received Career Achievement Awards.
Brian Bolke and Meredith Musselman presented the the Shelly Musselman Design Award for $10,000 to its first recipient, University of North Texas Fashion Design student Cassandra Bumpous, who graduates in December. Bumpous, whose sense of humor was noted by Bolke, created a capsule collection, sponsored by Forty Five Ten, that showcased her custom prints and bold designs.
The annual gala is FGI’s largest fundraiser of the year, and it provides thousands of dollars in scholarships to local fashion students. The silent auction, sponsored by Neiman Marcus, raised the most to date.
It was a night to remember, celebrate and embrace the talented and ever-growing fashion community in Dallas.
