    Quirky Texas tourist attraction suddenly draws international love

    The Beer Can House has become a Houston landmark.

    There's nothing new about the Beer Can House, the wonderfully quirky Houston-area abode decorated with 50,000 beer cans. But suddenly it has been discovered by national and international media, who are touting its landmark status and innovative use of recycled materials.

    In a recent story, the Daily Mail in London called it a "huge tourist attraction." The Telegraph, also based in London, said "the house in Houston, Texas, has become a local landmark because it is covered from top to bottom in empty, flattened-out beer cans." On July 29, Huffington Post featured it under the headline, "Beer Can House, Houston's Bizarre Attraction."

    "This is a light, fun, quirky story about a man who had a vision and did it on his own," says Jonathan Beitler, who handles marketing and media relations.

    The Los Angeles Times, Boston Herald and El Paso Times chimed in with their own stories, as did National Public Radio's All Things Considered, NBC Nightly News, PerezHilton.com, E! Online, Christian Post and Mother Nature Network.

    The deluge of articles started after Associated Press reporter Ramit Plushnick-Masti, who is based in Houston, toured the Beer Can House with out-of-town relatives. She liked it so much that she wrote a story about it, which the wire service disseminated to its media clients. From there, the story spread like wildfire.

    "It's everywhere right now," says Barrelhouse Media exec Jonathan Beitler, who does marketing and media relations for the nonprofit Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, which bought the property about 10 years ago and maintains it as a museum and tourist attraction. "It's really exciting. Now people are coming to recognize the Beer Can House."

    Beitler admits he's surprised about all of the media attention but thinks he knows why it happened.

    "People are looking for stories that are different and make readers happy. With all the negative media, this is a light, fun, quirky story about a man who had a vision and did it on his own."

    In 1968, the home's owner, John Milkovisch, began creating the unusual aluminum siding from beer cans he cut open and flattened. After he died in the mid-1980s, his wife maintained the home with the help of the couple's sons until her death, when the Orange Show began a campaign to acquire it as a folk art treasure.

    The recycling aspect has drawn interest from publications that emphasize sustainability and green living, Beitler says. "John Milkovisch was a forerunner of recycling."

    For Texans who haven't visited the landmark, it's open Saturday-Sunday, noon to 5 pm (year round), and Wednesday-Friday, 10 am-2 pm (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Admission is $2. Guided tours, including the inside of house, run $5.

    The Republic Wine Castle will open May 1.

    Folks in the Middle Ages may be more known for fanciful poulaines than crocodile cowboy boots, but that doesn’t mean one Texas cobbler doesn’t feel right at home among towers and turrets: Republic Boot Company is set to debut its Republic Wine Castle in the Hill Country.

    The castle is scheduled to open its doors at 101 Durango in Johnson City on May 1.

    Houston-based Republic is known for its high-end artisan cowboy boots and celebrity clients like Houston Texans owner Cal McNair and the team’s cheerleading squad, plus unexpected fans like rapper Paul Wall. The flagship is housed in a 100-year-old building in Houston’s hip Heights neighborhood.

    “We’ve always said that Republic isn’t just about making boots; it’s about preserving the soul of Texas,” explained Chris Conrad, CEO and Founder of Republic Boot Company, in a release. “Acquiring this castle allows us to create a legendary destination where our customers can immerse themselves in the craft and make bucket-list memories. It’s bold, it’s unique, and it’s exactly where the Republic belongs. We have some wild plans for this property that the world hasn't seen before.”

    The 12-acre estate, built in 2019, has been extensively renovated in line with its Houston store, which features ranch-chic furniture and big buck mounts. A release says some of the castle's regal personality, however, was kept intact.

    More importantly, the castle will also have wine. The brand is using the occasion of its grand opening weekend (May 1-3) to unveil its new Texas wine offering (served in chalices, we hope), made with fruit grown in Johnson City. The celebration will also include live music and custom boot fittings.

    Republic is no stranger to unique shopping opportunities. Its $6,000 Gator Hunt Experience that allows clients to shoot their own alligator hide and fashion it into a pair of custom boots. Hunters also get a taxidermy mount, 10 pounds of alligator meat, and hopefully a few recipes on how to cook it. We’re imagining gumbo.
