Whataburger opens first store with polarizing new design in Central Texas

Chances are, you've zipped down Interstate 35, through the town of Bellmead, without a second thought. But something new might turn your head: A Whataburger.

The Waco suburb gets to savor the distinction of being the first place in the U.S. with a Whataburger that showcases the chain’s controversial new design.

The updated Whataburger replaces an older one at 950 N. Loop 340, near I-35 and directly northeast of Waco. The 4,651-square-foot successor restaurant, which opened November 17, represents the debut of the company's new prototype for large-format locations.

“There’s a lot of things that people hold sacred, if you will, about our brand,” James Turcotte, senior vice president of real estate at San Antonio-based Whataburger, says on the company’s website. “That’s the iconic A-frame, the visuals, our branding, the linkage to our past. We really tried to blend those concepts [into] the prototype.”

In July, the company revealed a makeover for its larger restaurants. Under the design scheme, new Whataburger structures typically will lack their iconic A-frame, corrugated-metal design, which dates back to the 1950s. Rather, an A-frame architectural element will appear behind the chain’s “W” logo above the front entrance. Also, the reimagined exterior scales back the familiar orange-and-white color palette.

Other design highlights of the new Bellmead restaurant, with room for 84 guests, are:

  • Orange, gray, and white seating.
  • Wood flooring and accents that lend a warm, cozy feeling.
  • Light-colored brick, stone, and metal exterior.
  • Lots of glass to let in more natural light.
  • Wallpaper that includes subtle images of Bellmead’s water tower, the old MKT railyard, and an “LV” symbol paying tribute to the old La Vega High School.

“Our new large-unit prototype helps us serve more guests, even better than before. From a new kitchen layout to maintenance-free finishes, Bellmead’s new restaurant is designed to give our employees the best environment possible to serve up the delicious burgers and friendly customer service our customers know and love,” Whataburger spokesman Will Webber says.

When Whataburger took the wraps off the revamped restaurant design this summer, some folks on Twitter did not hold back.

For instance, one tweeter lodged this complaint: “@Whataburger is putting on a new face that doesn’t compare to its iconic A-frame restaurants, which portray a uniqueness and differentiation from other burger joints. Maybe more modern, but it diminishes the appeal and brand equity the company commands from the curb.”

Another Twitter critic bemoaned the new design as “boring and bland,” while still another decried it as “a slap in the face of the original design.”

But one fan of the new Whataburger vibe is Bellmead City Manager Yost Zakhary.

“It looks futuristic, is beautifully laid-out, and looks as if they are really gearing up to accommodate drive-thru traffic and call-in texts for curbside delivery,” Zakhary told the Waco Tribune-Herald. “It seems to be very customer friendly, with a good-sized dining room. I would envision it becoming a place just to hang out and do work. Within six months, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the top-selling store in the district, judging by my conversations with Whataburger.”

Dallas nonprofit Bonton Farms spreads its wings with 2 DFW Airport stores

South Dallas nonprofit Bonton Farms is going international without straying too far from home. The organization is debuting two storefronts at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport: one that just opened and another coming this fall.

The larger Bonton Farms marketplace, a 2,895-square-foot space in Terminal A, quietly opened in mid-August.

A second, smaller 551-square-foot newsstand near the A-Pier will open in October, when the airport's A-Pier expansion is scheduled to open, a spokesperson says. (Exact date is still TBA.)

The shops are called, simply, "Bonton Farms" and are operated by Marshall Retail Group, a subsidiary of WHSmith North America, which is partnering with Bonton Farms on the airport concept.

According to a release, both stores will sell Bonton Farms products such as locally made honey, handmade jam, and goat-milk soap, along with apparel, merchandise, and products made by "Bontonpreneurs," the local entrepreneurs supported through the nonprofit's business-development programs.

The stores will also offer fresh grab-and-go food, including sandwiches, wraps, salads and sweet treats, as well as travel essentials and souvenirs and gifts.

The airport project was first announced in 2024 as a partnership between Bonton Farms, WHSmith, and DFW Airport. The plan called for Bonton Farms products to be sold alongside goods from other North Texas businesses, including Fort Worth's Sons Coffee, Lettuce Cook, and Pearl Honey Spreads.

Bonton Farms began in the Bonton neighborhood with a small beekeeping operation and has grown into a nonprofit farm, market and community hub. Its operations now include two farm sites, a coffeehouse, farmers market, preservatory and farm-to-table Market/Café, along with programs focused on workforce development, education, health and wellness, economic opportunity and access to fresh food.

"This opening represents an exciting milestone for Bonton Farms and the community we serve," says Mark Jones, President & CEO of Bonton Farms, in the release. "For the first time, our products and our story will reach travelers from around the world. Through this partnership with WHSmith North America, we're creating new opportunities to share the mission of Bonton Farms while generating additional support for programs that help our neighbors thrive."

The airport shops are designed to introduce Bonton Farms to travelers who may not otherwise encounter the organization or its products.

"This store isn't just retail space, it's a front door to our mission," says Kendra Charisse Smith, Director of Operations at Bonton Farms, who oversaw execution of the partnership. "From sourcing and packaging our products to meet the demands of a whole new scale of distribution, every step was about making sure Bonton Farms shows up authentically in one of the busiest airports in the world. This launch reflects the same care and intentionality we put into everything we do in South Dallas.”
