    Relax and Get To It

World’s biggest yoga lifestyle event brings positive energy to Dallas

    Alex Bentley
    Jan 31, 2016 | 12:02 pm

The words “yoga” and “triathlon” don't normally appear in the same sentence, but that notion will be challenged when Wanderlust 108, the world’s first and only “mindful triathlon,” comes to Reunion Park in Dallas on April 16.

Organizers of the “reimagined” triathlon created the event as a way to promote community, self-awareness, and inner peace, rather than competition, among the participants. The event consists of a 5-kilometer run or walk; a large-scale, outdoor yoga class; and a guided meditation led by some of the world’s top teachers.

If you’re wondering what the number 108 is all about, in many Eastern traditions, it signifies the interconnection between body, mind, and the universe. One represents unity, zero represents stillness or calmness, and eight — with its resemblance to the infinity symbol — represents infinite possibility.

The race is not meant to be a race at all. Instead it’s designed to get people active, whether they choose to run, walk, prance, skip, or jump their way to the finish line. The outdoor yoga class is also inclusive, as everyone from beginners to experts will be welcome for 75 minutes of posing, complete with music from a DJ. The triathlon is capped off by 30 minutes of meditation that will clear your mind and relax your body.

But the experience doesn’t end there, as there also will be musical performances from live bands and DJs, acroyoga, hooping, slacklining, and the Speakeasy lecture series — Wanderlust’s version of TED talks. Also expect a marketplace, at which you can buy apparel, jewelry, and handcrafted items, and the Kombucha Garden, cafe, and juice bar, which will help keep you fueled throughout the day.

After launching in just two cities in 2014, Wanderlust 108 visited 17 cities in 2015, including Houston in November, and will expand further in 2016, going to more than 30 cities worldwide. Other cities in 2016 include Santiago, Chile; Atlanta, Georgia; Mexico City, Mexico; San Francisco, California; Auckland, New Zealand; Chicago, Illinois; and Seattle, Washington.

Wanderlust also organizes other, longer festivals around the world, retreats that expand greatly on the concepts espoused at Wanderlust 108.

Democrat Colin Allred is running for US Senate in Texas

Former Texas congressman Colin Allred launched another run for the U.S. Senate on July 1, following his 2024 challenge against Republican Senator Ted Cruz.

This time, Allred is seeking the seat of Republican Senator John Cornyn, who is facing a primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in what is likely to be one of the GOP's most contentious contests in 2026.

Allred's announcement comes just seven months after he lost by nearly 9 percentage points to Cruz. That race was one of the most expensive in the country last cycle, with Democrats spending more than $130 million trying to unseat Cruz.

A former NFL linebacker and attorney, Allred is the first high-profile Democrat to declare himself a candidate in the race that Democrats see as their best shot next year at ending a 30-year drought in statewide elections in Texas. Another former Democratic congressman, Beto O'Rourke, who came within 3 percentage points of defeating Cruz in 2018, also hasn't ruled out a run.

In a video announcing his candidacy, Allred took aim at both Cornyn and Paxton and cast himself as a fighter for those struggling to get ahead.

"I get it. Real change might feel impossible," Allred said. “But I’m not giving up."

In response to the announcement, Paxton criticized Allred's positions on immigration and LGBTQ issues.

“Texans have already rejected your liberal values once,” the attorney general said Tuesday on X. “Now it's time for Texas voters to say no to your vision and values once more.”

Allred tried to position himself as a moderate in last year’s race and made protecting abortion rights a centerpiece of his campaign. His supporters included Texas women who had serious pregnancy complications after the state's abortion ban took effect.

But his campaign drew criticism early on from some Democrats who grew restless with Allred’s strategy of not packing his schedule with raucous rallies or investing more in smaller corners of Texas, including cities along the border with Mexico.
In the end, Texas Democrats' streak of losses in statewide races continued while Republicans kept making gains along the predominately Hispanic border with Mexico, which had long been a Democratic stronghold.

Allred played four seasons in the NFL, all with the Tennessee Titans, after being undrafted out of Baylor University. He entered Congress after flipping a Republican district in Dallas in 2018.

Former astronaut Terry Virts also entered the U.S. Senate race as a Democratic candidate.

Looming over the GOP primary between Cornyn and Paxton is whether and when President Donald Trump will make an endorsement. In April, Trump praised both candidates and said he would make a decision later.
