Air Sexy Times
New York Times critics' pick Love & Air Sex shows its Dallas roots at Texas Theatre
Ever heard of air sexing? No? If you don't know what it is, don't worry — there's a movie about it. And Texas had a lot to do with it.
The recent New York Times critics' pick Love & Air Sex was co-written by Steven Walters, a Dallas Theater Center acting company member and co-artistic director of Second Thought Theatre. You can see the film, which premiered at SXSW 2013 as The Bounceback, on February 20 at the historic Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff.
Considering a good chunk of the Austin-set film takes place in a movie theater, expect this to be more than just a simple screening. The "Love & Air Sex Road Show," as it's been dubbed, is crisscrossing the country thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that raised $69,000. Just think about the significance of that number for a second.
A Q&A with Walters and Bryan Poyser, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay, and Justin Arnold, who plays Tim, follows the movie. The real action, though, begins after the talk back, when the audience can experience a live air sex demonstration from a Dallas-area champion. (Definitely leave the kids at home that night.)
Here's how the press release describes the film:
In Love & Air Sex, breaking up is hard to do. Desperate and lonely, Stan learns that his ex, Cathy, will be in Austin for the weekend and hops on a flight to the Lone Star State in hopes of “accidentally” running into her. But, another breakup crisis greets him in Austin between his friends Jeff and Kara, who are hell-bent on keeping Stan and Cathy apart. Cavorting through Austin’s honkytonks, nightclubs and a cutthroat air-sex competition, Stan and Cathy find bouncing back from their heartache to be unexpectedly complicated. An outrageous but heartfelt comedy, Love & Air Sex is Bryan Poyser’s follow up to the hit Sundance film, Lovers of Hate.
We've seen the movie — and, if you can't make the screening, so can you, because it's available on Video on Demand and through Amazon Instant and iTunes). We laughed a lot. We cringed a little. We nodded in understanding at the fickle nature of relationships and dating. We got very excited at seeing classic Austin hangouts. We spotted Walters in a very memorable cameo.

In case you're still wondering what air sexing is, here's a helpful explanation: “It’s Air Guitar meets karaoke meets mime meets perversion.” Sounds to us like you'll get your money's worth.
