The downtown Dallas branch of Agave Azul Mexican Kitchen-Tequila Sanctuary, the upscale Mexican restaurant and tequila house from owner Zotico Reyes, opens April 1. The restaurant will start with dinner service before expanding into lunch.
This is the second Agave Azul, which also has a location in Carrollton; a Flower Mound location closed in 2014. The downtown menu, by acclaimed chef Sebastian Royo, promises to be different from Agave Azul's other branch.
Reyes hosted a party on March 28 to showcase his newest location, where guests took in the restaurant's colorful sculptures and sophisticated bar, backlit by a rainbow of colors. Mariachi musicians performed while bartenders mixed up house margaritas, made to order with fresh-squeezed lime.
On the patio, under the shade of a stately tree wrapped in blue pinpoint lights, diners snacked on menu favorites such as tuna tostadas, beef and chicken fajita tacos, dumplings, and churros.
Attendees included Mayor Mike Rawlings; Dallas City Council member Adam Medrano; former council member Pauline Medrano; Mayor Pro Tem Monica Alonzo; former Carrollton Mayor Becky Miller; and Larry and Ted Hamilton of Hamilton Properties, who undertook the revival of the Harwood District office building where Agave Azul is located.
Hamilton Properties' previous renovations include the DPL Lofts in the Dallas Power & Light building on Commerce Street nearby, as well as the Davis Building apartments on Main Street.
