Lone Star distillers show Texas spirit with grapefruit-infused vodkas
Deep Impact and Armageddon. Dante’s Peak and Volcano. Antz and A Bug’s Life. Sometimes two groups of people come up with really similar ideas mere months apart from one another. Often times, one wins out (looking at you, Armageddon).
But when it comes to alcohol, does there have to be a winner? After all, it’s possible that Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka and Western Son Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka can peacefully coexist. And, yes, those names are practically the same, and we’re not even going to talk about Shiner’s Ruby Redbird.
Western Son’s grapefruit vodka came out in March, and Deep Eddy’s came out in April, so they’re actually quite different in that regard. Both are distilled 10 times and use Texas grapefruits and, dammit, okay, they’re pretty much the same thing.
Which one should you drink? It probably depends on where your regional loyalties lie; Deep Eddy is Austin-based, while Western Son is located in Carrollton.
It’s a real toss-up between the pair, but thankfully Texas summers are long (so, so long), and you should have plenty of time to grab a bottle of both and experiment with appropriate mixers.
Just don’t blend the two vodkas together. It creates a black hole.
