    Oso Soon

Highly rated North Dallas neighborhood restaurant forced to close too soon

    Teresa Gubbins
    May 30, 2015 | 10:19 am

If you loved the mezze platter and the charming hospitality of Oso Food & Wine, you'll want to make your reservation stat: The Preston-Forest restaurant will close on Saturday, May 30, according to a note from owner Michael Cox.

"With great regret and sorrow, I have decided to close Oso," he said. "Tonight will be our final night of service."

Cox, a Dallas restaurant veteran who was previously partnered with chef Stephan Pyles in epic eateries such as Star Canyon and AquaKnox, opened Oso in October 2014, as the fulfillment of his dream of owning his own restaurant.

The restaurant seemed like the ultimate neighborhood spot that had it all: cozy atmosphere, friendly service and a menu overseen by chef Kelly Hightower that ranged from burgers to chicken liver fra diavlo on polenta with honey-glazed bacon.

And positive press was not the problem; Oso received plenty. It made the list of best new restaurants, and Hightower earned a spot on CultureMap's top 10 list of chefs, which described him as being "in his element with international flavors."

"Since opening last fall we have earned many loyal guests and exceptional reviews in the press and social media," Cox said. "Unfortunately we were not able to gain a large enough audience to support the business. We are so sorry and heart broken to close, but we simply can not afford to continue."

In his note, Cox thanked those "who supported and believed in us," including his wife, Gail; daughters Britt, Emmelie and Maisey; Hightower; his dedicated team; and guests, friends and limited partners. Cox said that his priority was to find employment for the staff, then focus on the the details of closing the business.

"Please know I am so grateful for the wonderful experience of opening Oso," he said.

May 30 is the last night you can see Michael Cox at Oso Food & Wine.

June is here, and cold drinks are the perfect way to cool off. This edition of Where to Drink, CultureMap's monthly column of where to sip, spotlights six venues with various specials — whether that's a new cocktail menu, a new late happy hour, or an unusual happy hour from a favorite BBQ joint.

Here's where to drink in Dallas this month:

    Big Al's Smokehouse
Proving that even barbecue restaurants can have happy hours, too, this storied smokehouse near Love Field has added a daily happy hour, featuring two cocktails: spiked sweet tea and margaritas, each 16 ounces, $10 all day, everyday. It's a customer-friendly deal that's available for dine-in or to-go.

    Electric Shuffle
Happy hour is back at this shuffleboard eatertainment spot in Deep Ellum. Discount cocktails include margarita, espresso martini, and ranch water for $10. Beers, wines, and seltzers are $5. Food specials include $5 fries and $10 pizzas. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 3–5 pm.

    Knife Dallas
Highland Dallas Hotel restaurant has introduced a happy hour with cocktails, beer, and wine specials. Sommelier-selected wines are $9, select beers are $5, and signature cocktails such as the 75 Spritz are $11. On the food side, small plates such as lamb meatballs and yellowtail crudo are $15. Available Sunday through Thursday from 5-7 pm.

    Puttshack
Addison mini golf venue has a new summer happy hour with drinks and bites discounted to $6. Specials feature 16-ounce draft beers, canned cocktails, and wine options. To top it off, customers get half off their second game of mini golf. Food discounts include chicken quesadillas, Nashville hot bao buns, and loaded tots. Available Monday through Thursday from 3-6 pm.

    SER Steak & Spirits
Hilton Anatole rooftop restaurant has new culinary-themed cocktails for summer. The In Bloom has Texas bourbon, Amaro Nonino, black walnut bitters, and a shiitake mushroom syrup. The Overstory has Basil Hayden’s bourbon, shiitake syrup, and black walnut bitters; Cabin Fever has Buffalo Trace, clove, lemon, Amaro Nonino, and smoke. Social hour specials include $10 cocktails and $10 five-ounce pours of sommelier-selected wines. This happy hour is Monday to Friday from 5-6:30 pm.

    Victor's
Oak Cliff restaurant founded by business partners Tameka Davis and Torrey Adams in 2023 has Southern eats, nightly dining specials, and karaoke — and now a new later-than-usual happy hour on weekdays. Drinks specials include $5 shots and $7 wells. Bites include $1 wings, in all flavors. Happy hour is Tuesday through Thursday from 7-9 pm and Friday from 6-8 pm.
