The ultimate 3-day guide for an unforgettable weekend in Austin

CultureMap Create
Jul 11, 2022 | 12:00 pm

Your ultimate summer weekend getaway in Austin is covered, thanks to this three-day itinerary that’s packed with things to do and places to go.

Friday
Start your day with a morning run, walk, or bike ride on the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. This 10-mile loop encircles downtown Austin’s Lady Bird Lake and includes some of the city’s most scenic urban spots.

You can also rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board from one of the rental shops along the lakeshore for an adventure on the water.

Stop in at the historic Texas Capitol Visitors Center and get a Lone Star State history lesson during a free guided tour of the handsome pink granite Texas State Capitol.

You’re not doing Austin right if you don’t try some of the world-famous barbecue. Get in line early for the ultra-tender brisket crafted by James Beard Award-winning pitmaster Aaron Franklin at Franklin Barbecue. Try the Brisket Frito Pie topped with chili and cheddar cheese at Micklethwait Craft Meats. Or sample house-made chipotle sausage and juicy ribs at la Barbecue.

Before calling it a day, slip into a real honky-tonk and go two-stepping at Broken Spoke, known for its chicken-fried steak and free dinner show; do some boot-scootin' at The White Horse, with live country jams; or drop in at Little Longhorn Saloon during its six-days-a-week happy hour, with $2.50 Lone Star beers.

Saturday
Go on a selfie tour of Austin’s iconic murals. The popular “I love you so much” mural is a must-shoot and it’s painted on the wall of Jo's Coffee on South Congress Avenue. “Hi, How Are You” features a bug-eyed bullfrog named Jeremiah, originally drawn by outsider folk artist Daniel Johnston, near the University of Texas at Austin campus. And the colorful “Greetings from Austin” postcard is in South Austin.

For lunch, try Austin’s favorite food: tacos! Some of the most iconic are served by Veracruz All Natural, Fresa’s Chicken al Carbon, and Vaquero Taquero.

View Mexican and Latin American art at the Mexic-Arte Museum, and grab a ’gram pic of one of the revolving murals painted on the side of the museum.

Then walk down the street to see modern art at The Contemporary Austin Jones Center and get free same-day entry to TheContemporary Austin–Laguna Gloria, a beautiful Mediterranean-style villa with an outdoor sculpture park on Lake Austin.

Near Laguna Gloria, be sure to hike the stone steps of Mount Bonnell and get a sweeping view of the city from the top. This Lake Austin landmark has been a popular attraction since the 19th century.

Get your happy hour on with a taste of Austin’s cocktail culture at Whisler's, known for creative concoctions with mezcal and other unique ingredients; or make a reservation at Midnight Cowboy, serving classic libations in a sultry speakeasy.

Live music is a must in Austin. Catch a band at the legendary Continental Club on South Congress Avenue, which has been hosting musicians from rock to country for 60 years, and is often the site of surprise celebrity performances.

Later, hit some of Austin’s best LGBTQ+-friendly bars on Fourth Street in the Warehouse District, with dancing and drag queens at hot spots that include Rain on 4th, Highland Lounge, and Oilcan Harry’s.

Sunday
Enjoy brunch — with a side of music — at Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden, where the tables are communal, more than 200 craft beers are served, and 30 varieties of sausage are grilled during the Sunday Big Band Brunch.

For an afternoon escape, explore a taste of the Texas Hill Country at scenic breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

Follow the Driftwood Wine Trail and try wines at six scenic wineries. Sample sotol, an earthy Texas spirit, at Desert Door Distillery. Stroll around a working regenerative farm with a beer in hand at Vista Brewing. Or take a tour of the Garrison Brothers Distillery and taste sweet mash right from the stills at the state’s oldest whiskey distillery.

Prefer to stay closer to downtown? Pack a picnic dinner and head to Zilker Park. Take a refreshing dip in Barton Springs Pool, the park’s beloved spring-fed natural pool, or bring a frisbee for the dogs to enjoy in the expansive grassy park.

For more information on these destinations and other local favorites, head over to Visit Austin.

Savor the flavor of autumn-themed dishes in this Dallas restaurant news

butternut squash polenta
North Italia

Fall is on the menu with butternut squash polenta.

This roundup of Dallas dining news is all about new menus and new dishes to try. There are vegan dishes, happy hour menus, new fall offerings, new salads, new drinks, and a famous fast-food BBQ item, a collection of items pulled from press releases and online sources.

Here's what's happening in Dallas restaurant news:

Fatburger and its sister brand Buffalo’s Express opened in Garland. The California-based chain that's a Hollywood celeb favorite is known for juicy, built-to-order burgers weighing one-third of a pound, heftier than the typical fast-food patty, with more of a hand-formed appearance. It debuted in Texas in 2020 with a location in North Richland Hills and two others have since opened: One in Arlington and one in Allen, opened by Alfredo Gonzalez who also opened this new Garland location.

Oak Cliff Burrito Company is a pop-up inside Trompo, the recently opened restaurant at Jefferson Tower from Luis Olvera, serving burritos, nachos, and bowls from 11 am-2 pm. It's camping out at Trompo until it moves to a more permanent location at 626 W. Davis St. There are regular burritos, smothered burritos, and burritos smothered with nachos. Order online for pickup at Trompo, or via Doordash and Uber Eats

Katy Trail Ice House in Uptown is expanding. Ray Washburne, who is one of the partners who knew, announced they will be turning the former Asel Art Supply building into an indoor space called Katy Trail Depot.

Loro Dallas has new fall dishes Thai Peanuts, Smoked Three Bean Salad, Green Curry Beignets, Caramelized Onion-Cheddar Burger, Beer Battered Cod Sandwich with pickles & caraway slaw, and Key Lime Pie, priced from $4.50 to $13.50.

Libertine Bar on Greenville Avenue has new Happy Hour specials including Loaded Skillet Queso with carnitas, sour cream & guacamole, Soft Pretzel with beer cheese & mustard, Kettle Chips with onion dip, Chicken Bites with honey mustard, and a 44 Farms Double Cheese Burger with American cheese and pickle-fries, from $2.50 to $7.50. All bottles of wine are half price. Frozen drinks including margaritas & Frose are $5, and some draft beer are $5.

Swizzle, the tiki-themed bar at 1802 Greenville Ave., is now open 7 days a week, meaning you can visit on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as the rest of the week.

IPIC Fairview is testing out new vegan options including vegan nachos grand with tortilla chips, black bean spread, vegan shredded mozzarella, vegan queso, vegan sour cream, guacamole, and jalapeños; a vegan supreme pizza with vegan shredded mozzarella, Impossible rumbles, pepper & onion, mushroom, red onion, and tomato. They also have a special cocktail for the fall: Autumn Apple Falls cocktail with apple cinnamon-infused vodka, ginger syrup, lemon, agave, and bitters with a cinnamon sugar rim.

Spitz Frisco, which does a healthy modern take on Mediterranean, Greek, & American foods including wraps, salads, gyros, bowls, falafel, hummus, pita, and fries, is spotlighting its vegan menu, with a separate tab on its website listing wraps with hummus and crispy garbanzos, and a “Medi bowl” with falafel, dill quinoa, hummus, tomato, cucumber, olives, lemon-herb tahini, crispy garbanzos, and za’atar. It’s a nice effort although some of the items have ingredients like feta cheese, so it would appear that they might not know exactly what “vegan” means (it means, no animal products, and that would include cheese). Founded in Utah, Spitz has locations in California, Colorado, Oregon, Minnesota, and now Texas, and opened in Frisco in September.

North Italia has a new fall/winter menu featuring seasonal ingredients such as butternut squash, fuji apple, figs, rainbow cauliflower, and hazelnut, such as Butternut Squash Annolini, Roasted Porchetta, Short Rib Lumache pasta, and Crispy Eggplant Parmesan, plus seasonal cocktails like the Barbarini Smash and the Black Fig Manhattan cocktail.

Firehouse Subs has a new Prime Rib Steak Sub, featuring prime rib cooked sous vide, topped with caramelized onions, provolone, lettuce, tomato, garlic aioli, and mustard on a toasted sub roll.

Salad and Go has three new dishes for fall. Roasted Autumn Salad with sweet potatoes, caramelized brussels sprouts, candied pecans, dried cranberries, and parmesan cheese, with protein choice of chicken or tofu or steak for an extra charge, and which can also be ordered as a wrap; Chicken Pot Pie Soup, and Pink Lemonade with cranberry juice and grapefruit.

Black Rock Coffee Bar has three new drinks for winter: Peppermint Bark White Mocha with peppermint bark sauce, white chocolate, and espresso; Caramel Nog Latte with eggnog, caramel, and espresso; and Christmas Cookie Cold Brew with chocolate macadamia nut and a sweet vanilla cold foam.

McDonald’s is bringing back its McRib sandwich for the fall, along with a line of McRib merchandise, available on GoldenArchesUnlimited.com. McRib is a boneless pork item with BBQ sauce, onions, and pickles, served on a sub-style bun. It was first introduced in 1980 and is featured on the menu sporadically.

Eight Elite Light Lager is now available at movie theaters for the first time, only at Cinemark Theatres. Founded by Troy Aikman, Eight is a lager brewed with organic grains.

Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas is about to be rebranded. Trinity Real Estate Investments signed a management agreement with Marriott International to turn it into a Ritz-Carlton in 2024. Four Seasons will continue to operate Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas until December 15, which is the end of the current management agreement. Following December 15, it will become The Las Colinas Resort, Dallas, an independent hotel managed by The Ritz-Carlton. It will undergo a property-wide renovation and then become The Ritz-Carlton Dallas, Las Colinas.

Crow Museum of Asian Art exhibition offers peek at new UT Dallas spinoff

"Cast: Molding a New Museum for UT Dallas"
Crow Museum of Asian Art

Rendering for new museum coming to UT Dallas.

The Crow Museum of Asian Art is sharing a sneak peek at a second location currently being built on the campus of The University of Texas at Dallas.

Called Cast: Molding a New Museum for UT Dallas, the exhibition will run November 3 to March 5, 2023, at the Crow Museum in the Dallas Arts District at 2010 Flora St.

The new museum spinoff will be part of the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum, a 12-acre cultural district on the UT Dallas Campus that will eventually house two art museums and a performance hall. The museum's groundbreaking was in May.

According to a release, Cast: Molding a New Museum for UT Dallas will feature:

  • 3D models of the new museum structure
  • renderings that show the design process
  • introductions of the designers, architects, planners and leadership
  • selections of works of art from the Crow Museum of Asian Art
  • works from the Stevens, Beockman, and Horchow collections that have been gifted to The University of Texas at Dallas.

I mean, come on, 3D models, gotta see that.

The exhibition will also provide a behind-the-scenes look into the ideation and planning process for the Crow Museum, including writing and design by the late Dr. Richard C. Brettell, who initiated plans for the Athenaeum and was involved in the selection of Morphosis, the architectural firm doing the design.

The exhibition was co-created by the Crow Museum and Morphosis to show how ideas become spaces for engagement and learning. The curator is Amy Hofland, senior director of the Crow Museum.

“We are forging the northern expansion of the Crow Museum of Asian Art within the greater concept of the Athenaeum – one museum, two locations,” Hofland says in a statement. “This growth for the Crow Museum will allow us to be more accessible and relevant to the campus, which boasts a significant Asian American student population, but also the growingly diverse communities within the North Texas region.”

The Athenaeum complex
The Athenaeum began to take shape in 2019 when the Trammell and Margaret Crow family donated the entire collection of the Trammell and Margaret Crow Museum of Asian Art, together with $25.45 million of support funding for a new museum on the UT Dallas campus.

The project is supported by a $32 million gift from the O’Donnell Foundation, the single largest monetary gift from one of UT Dallas' most significant donors.

The complex will include three new buildings – the Crow Museum of Asian Art, a performance hall, and a planned museum for the traditional arts of the Americas.

In addition to the Crow Collection, the University has received gifts of three collections of Latin American folk art: the Roger Horchow Collection, the Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection of Latin American Folk Art, and the Bryan J. Stevens Collection of Masks of the Sierra de Puebla. These three will form the basis of the second museum, focused on the University’s growing collection of Mexican art and folk art of the Americas.

Phase I includes the Crow Museum, and is projected to debut spring 2024. The downtown location will remain open and continue to present a full exhibition and program calendar.

The Crow Museum’s collection demonstrates the diversity of Asian art, with more than 1,000 works from Cambodia, China (including Tibet), India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam, spanning from the ancient to the contemporary, as well as a library of more than 12,000 books, catalogs, and journals.

Barbara Bush and Laura Bush

The 411: Former U.S. first lady Laura Bush and daughter Barbara Bush — the two "quietest" members of the Bush family (neither having been a politician nor a TV talk show host) — stepped into the spotlight on a rare public outing together to help raise funds for a beloved Dallas organization.

Just how beloved? The 22nd annual Austin Street Center Humble Beginnings Luncheon drew a crowd of 897 attendees to the Hilton Anatole's Chantilly Ballroom on Friday, October 14.

Chaired by Frank Mihalopoulos and Jay McAuley and led by Austin Street Center CEO Daniel Roby, the luncheon and presentation celebrated the center's successes (including a large new facility) and underscored its mission to serve the homeless population of Dallas.

Popular party group Emerald City Band set a celebratory mood by entertaining guests as they arrived and sat down to an autumnal lunch of butternut squash soup and seared chicken breast salad.

Legendary local radio personality and Austin Street Center supporter Norm Hitzges presented Carolyn Lacy Miller the Norm Hitzges Distinguished Service Award for her many contributions to the organization, including the creation of its Sisterhood Program, which serves women who are homeless, have been victimized, traumatized, and suffer with mental illnesses and/or substance use illnesses.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson was presented the Public Service Award. In his acceptance remarks, he became emotional when he talked about how homelessness has affected his family personally.

The highlight of the day was a conversation with Laura and Barbara Bush, moderated by former ambassador, Hon. Jeanne Phillips.

The theme being "service to others," much of the talk focused on the Bushes' initiatives to reach people around the world — from the women of Afghanistan to AIDS victims in Africa. Barbara said a trip with her parents to AIDS-ravaged parts of Africa, in fact, helped change her career trajectory from architecture to global health.

There were light-hearted moments, too. Barbara shared funny stories about growing up, sharing a name with her grandmother - former first lady Barbara Bush. (One laugh-out-loud tale involved an email from a cousin about bikini waxing.) Laura revealed the best advice her mother-in-law gave her: Don't criticize your husband's speeches (advice she didn't always follow, for better or worse).

Laura, along with daughter Jenna and Jenna's daughters Mila and Poppy, she said, recently had been welcomed back to the White House by President Biden and Dr. Biden. During a later concert at the White House, singer Elton John recognized the former first lady for her work on behalf of AIDS causes around the world, she said.

From stage, it was announced that George W. and Laura Bush will receive the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition's Global Leadership Award on December 1, World AIDS Day.

In total, the Austin Street Center raised nearly $800,000 at the Humble Beginnings Luncheon.

To end the inspiring afternoon, each attendee took home a luxurious Xela Aroma candle hand-poured by women of Austin Street Center's Sisterhood Program. Candle proceeds go directly to support the Sisterhood Program and are for sale at xelaaroma.com.

Who: Nearly 900 Austin Street Center staff, board members, patrons, and supporters including Abim Bola, Mary Danz, Bianca Davis, Priya Murphy, Britt Carman, Katelyn Muñoz, Carolyn Arnold, Gail Turner, R. Gerald Turner, and many, many more.
