    This Week's Hot Headlines

Dallas creative’s multimillion-dollar home tops this week’s 5 most popular stories

    Anna Fialho Byers
    Jul 16, 2016 | 10:00 am

Editor’s note: Another week has come and gone, and there’s a lot we all probably missed. But we’re looking out for you, kid. Here are the most popular stories from this past week:

    1. What a $2 million modern Dallas home looks like when the seller’s this creative. Fossil creative director Patrick Conner and his partner, television host and radio personality Chris Jagger, have put their 1960s modern home on the market, and it's everything you'd expect from an owner with an eye for design.

    2. Long-awaited chicken chain finally feeds Dallas-Fort Worth with multiple locations. People go crazy for the flame-grilled chicken at the El Pollo Loco chain, hailing from the West Coast. It finally arrives in Dallas-Fort Worth in August, with the first two stores opening in Allen and Bedford.

    3. Uptown Dallas bar impresarios try their hand at casual Deep Ellum restaurant. Imran and Asim Sheikh, the team that opened Citizen in Uptown Dallas last year, are now heading to Deep Ellum, where they are opening Stirr, a restaurant that they envision as a "refined yet casual gathering spot" for friends.

    4. President Barack Obama to honor Dallas police officers with personal visit. At the invitation of Mayor Rawlings, President Barack Obama traveled to Dallas on July 12 to attend an interfaith memorial service at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The service honored the families of the fallen police officers and members of the Dallas community who were personally affected by the July 7 shooting following a protest in downtown Dallas.

    5. Where to drink in Dallas right now: 5 bars for on-trend sangria. These fives places might not be what you immediately think of when you want a glass of sangria, but give them a chance this summer, and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Parent scuffle causes cheerleader stampede at Dallas convention center

A fight between two parents caused a stampede on March 1 at Dallas' Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center where a cheerleading competition was taking place.

According to a report from the Dallas Police Department, the parents of two competitors at the NCA All-Star National Championship got into a fight, which knocked down poles, which the crowd mistook for gunshots and began to flee.

At least 10 people sustained minor injuries. The convention center was evacuated, and the competition was canceled for the rest of the day.

According to the DPD, police responded to a call at approximately 1 pm at the convention center, regarding an active shooter.

Their investigation determined that a fight between two people led to multiple poles being knocked down, which caused a loud noise. This noise contributed to panic inside the building, prompting people to rush outside in a stampede.

By 2:30 pm, it was determined that there was no active shooter. The police report said that multiple non-life-threatening injuries occurred during the chaos, and a family reunification center was set up at 400 Lamar St.

The competition will resume on Sunday, March 2.

There's a video of what is said to be the fight that started it, posted on Twitter, although it offers no evidence of poles being knocked down. The two parents fighting are male; online wags have noted that it is more often mothers who take the cheerleading thing seriously.

The dustup was covered by national network TV news and has earned international coverage from as far away as Ireland.

The NCA All-Star National Championship is an annual fixture at the convention center, with the 2025 event drawing 1712 teams, with more than 30,000 competitors and 58,000 attendees including participants, coaches, parents, and family members.
