    Lonesome Dove Flies to Austin

Fort Worth chef Tim Love picks Austin for second Lonesome Dove restaurant

    Arden Ward
    Aug 12, 2014 | 2:51 pm

Fort Worth celebrity chef Tim Love is planting some roots in Austin. On Tuesday, Love announced via Twitter that he's taking his Lonesome Dove Western Bistro concept from the Fort Worth Stockyards District to the Capital City: "I'm excited and humbled to confirm that a second location of the Lonesome Dove will be coming to the heart of downtown Austin."

According to Austin360, that "heart of downtown" location is 419 Colorado St., the former home of sushi restaurant Kenichi, which shuttered on Monday night. (Kenichi Dallas has different owners and is still open.)

No opening date is set for Lonesome Dove.

Though this is his first restaurant there, Love is no stranger to Austin. In fact, he's one of the founders of the Austin Food & Wine Festival, where he's known for his rather raucous behavior and big personality. His grilling demos have proved to be an event favorite (and we think it's for more than just the obligatory tequila shots).

Love owns several restaurants in Dallas-Fort Worth, including Woodshed Smokehouse, Love Shack and Queenie's in Denton. He's also a TV regular, having appeared on Top Chef Masters. Currently, you can catch him on CNBC's Restaurant Startup.

Tim Love announced via Twitter he's opening a Lonesome Dove in downtown Austin.

    Bagel News

Familiar team to open Bagel Bros. bagel shop by White Rock Lake Dallas

There's a new bagel shop coming to East Dallas from a veteran team: Called Bagel Bros., it'll open at 9219 Garland Rd. #1102 Dallas, in the former Urban Vines Bistro space which closed in 2024.

Bagel Bros is from actual real-life brothers Johnny Gomez and Ruben Gomez, who were both previously involved with Benny's Bagels Lakewood. Ruben was the owner, and Johnny was the manager. Ruben, who bought the shop from the original owner in 2017, built on the solid local following that Benny's had already developed, before selling the restaurant last year.

"Ruben had some issues and had to let it go, but I decided to step up — we switched roles," Johnny says.

Now with their new venture, Johnny sits in the ownership seat and Ruben serves as manager. They're planning on opening in the next few weeks.

When it came time to do a shop, they decided to stay in the area they know and love.

"After we left Benny's, we'd been putting our thoughts together about doing something new," Johnny says. "We've always been in the Lakewood area, and we knew a lot of customers from our time at Benny's."

Their menu will feature 14 flavors, some standard, some creative: sesame, everything, poppy seed, garlic, onion, cinnamon raisin, blueberry, and jalapeno cheddar — but also a unique "French toast" bagel.

They won't go too crazy on schmears: plain, onion & chives, veggie, and spinach — but they will offer a fun, one-of-a-kind Fruity Pebbles schmear.

They'll also do bagel sandwiches including breakfast and lunch, as well as wraps and croissants. For coffee, they'll start with drip and iced coffee, then add espresso drinks once they get rolling.

They plan on being open from 6 am to 4 pm daily.

They've done a little remodeling of the Urban Vines space, added a TV, and opened a window into the kitchen to faciliate orders. lt's a 2,100-square-foot space that comes with an outdoor patio.

They're not even open yet but they're already getting a warm welcome.

"Residents in the building have already dropped by to say they're looking forward to having a place they can walk down to for bagels," he says. "It seems like the whole apartment complex is excited to have us there."
