    Weekend Event Planner

These are the 11 best things to do in Dallas this weekend

    Alex Bentley
    Sep 13, 2018 | 6:00 am

There will be absolutely no shortage of things to do around Dallas this weekend. The packed slate includes two new local theater productions, appearances by no fewer than three big-name comedians, performances by music superstars in three different events, fantastic dance, a basketball superstar playing tennis, and music from one of the biggest TV shows of all time.

Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. Want more options? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.

     Thursday, September 13

     Theatre Three presents Once
A truly original experience, the Tony Award-winning Once is an unforgettable story about going for your dreams, not living in fear, and the power of music to connect all of us. Featuring an ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, the musical centers around a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes an interest in his haunting love songs. The musical will run at Theatre Three through October 7.

     Boyz II Men in concert
R&B superstars Boyz II Men were one of the biggest groups of the '90s, wowing the masses with hits like "Motownphilly," "End of the Road," "I'll Make Love to You," "On Bended Knee," and "4 Seasons of Loneliness." They haven't hit those highs in a long time, but they're still a big presence in the music business, releasing their 13th album, Under the Streetlight, in 2017. They'll perform at Winspear Opera House.

Undermain Theatre presents How is it That We Live or Shakey Jake + Alice
The world premiere play How is it That We Live or Shakey Jake + Alice traces the arc of the lives of two lovers through the years, from the first kiss to the last goodbye and everything in between. On the road, in an indelible American landscape, Shakey Jake + Alice launch themselves on a poetic quest as they dance to the end of love. The production will run at Undermain Theatre through October 7.

     Hannibal Buress in concert
Comedian Hannibal Buress has seen his profile grow ever larger over the past five years thanks to roles on Comedy Central's Broad City, in movies like Neighbors and Tag, and his podcast, Hannibal Buress: Handsome Rambler. Buress will perform at the Majestic Theatre as part of his nationwide stand-up comedy tour.

     Friday, September 14

TITAS presents Diavolo: Architecture in Motion
Diavolo: Architecture in Motion uses dance to explore the relationship between the human body and its architectural environment. Meticulously designed bespoke architectural structures serve as the central inspiration for each work, activated by the stylistically varied and intensely physical choreography. The company will perform three times through Saturday at Moody Performance Hall.

     Saturday, September 15

Dirk Nowitzki Pro Celebrity Tennis Classic
It's been amazing watching Dirk Nowitizki play basketball for the Dallas Mavericks over the past 20 years, but you can see him take on a whole other athletic pursuit at this event. The third annual tennis tournament, taking place at SMU Tennis Center, will feature Nowitzki, Hall of Famer Andy Roddick, five-time Olympian Mark Knowles, actor Boris Kodjoe, and more.

CitySquare presents A Night to Remember with Reba McEntire
Reba McEntire, one of the most successful country vocalists of all time, comes to the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory to deliver an evening of country, pop, and anything in-between with her incredible natural talent and engaging persona. The event, known as A Night to Remember, is CitySquare's annual fundraiser, benefiting the non-profit and celebrating 30 years of fighting poverty.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra Gala Concert and After-Party
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra will officially kick off their 2018-2019 season with this gala concert featuring Kristin Chenoweth. The Tony Award winner, star of stage and screen, will present an evening of her favorite Broadway show tunes, love songs and classical repertoire. The concert at Meyerson Symphony Center will be conducted by Mary-Mitchell Campbell.

Stomping Ground Comedy Theater presents Kevin McDonald
Fans of Kids in the Hall can park themselves at Stomping Ground Comedy Theater over the weekend, as Kevin McDonald will be their featured guest. He'll work with students in workshops, and then perform in improv show Quest in Show on Saturday evening, talk with comedy podcast The Brave Boys late on Saturday, and then perform stand-up and improv with students on Sunday night.

     Sunday, September 16

     Hasan Minhaj in concert
Hasan Minhaj is a comedian, actor, host, and writer who became well known as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. He will soon become the first Indian-American to host his own weekly comedy show for Netflix, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, which will explore the modern cultural and political landscape. He'll perform two stand-up sets at Majestic Theatre.

Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience Featuring Ramin Djawadi
You'll have to wait until 2019 for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, but you can get a taste of Westeros via this concert at American Airlines Center. Famed composer Ramin Djawadi, who has scored every episode of the series, leads an orchestra and choir performing music from all seven seasons of the iconic HBO series. The concert will include new music and footage from Season 7.

Boyz II Men will play at Winspear Opera House on September 13.

Dallas' daily newspaper The Dallas Morning News has been acquired by New York-based Hearst, where it will join a portfolio of 28 daily and 50 weekly newspapers.

According to a release, the announcement was made on July 10 by Steven R. Swartz, president and CEO of Hearst, and Grant Moise, CEO of DallasNews Corporation and publisher of The Dallas Morning News.

Hearst's portfolio includes ownership in cable television networks such as A&E, HISTORY, Lifetime, and ESPN; 35 television stations; newspapers across the U.S., including the Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, and Times Union (Albany); digital services businesses; and more than 200 magazine editions around the world.

The transaction, which has been unanimously approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies, is expected to close during the third or early fourth quarter. It will also include Medium Giant, DallasNews’ marketing agency.

Upon closing, The Dallas Morning News will join Hearst Newspapers, the operating group responsible for Hearst’s newspapers, local digital marketing services businesses and directories, which publishes 28 dailies and 50 weeklies across the United States.

The acquisition of the DMN will give Hearst nearly a complete set of Texas newspapers: In addition to the Houston Chronicle, it also owns the Austin American Statesman and the San Antonio Express News, as well as smaller Texas newspapers such as the Plainview Herald, the Midland Reporter Telegram, the Laredo Morning Times, and the Beaumont Enterprise. The only one missing is the Fort Worth Star Telegram, which is owned by McClatchy.

Jeff Johnson, president of Hearst Newspapers, stated, “Hearst Newspapers is committed to supporting The Dallas Morning News’ continued success through smart investments in their digital strategy, compelling journalism and expanded audience reach. This move aligns squarely with our strategy of backing trusted, high-impact local media brands in growth markets. We’re looking forward to working with the teams at The News and Medium Giant.”

Robert W. Decherd, DallasNews Corporation’s former board chairman, president and chief executive officer during a career spanning 50 years, and current owner of a majority of the voting power of DallasNews Corporation stock, said, “The News’ 140-year commitment to distinguished journalism has been extraordinarily important to the evolution of Dallas as one of America’s greatest cities. We have generations of News employees to thank for this. I’m confident that the path forward with Hearst Newspapers assures The News’ ability to continue informing and strengthening North Texas for many years to come.”

DallasNews shareholders will receive $14 in cash for each share of common stock - a premium of 219% based on the closing price of DallasNews’ common stock of $4.39 per share on July 9, 2025. The deal is valued at $79 million, according to the DMN. Upon closing of the transaction, DallasNews Corporation will become a private company and its shares will no longer trade on Nasdaq.
