Chipotle-Style Sushi
Austin-based How Do You Roll? answers need for fast, cheap sushi in Plano
Fast casual Asian chain How Do You Roll? will open its first branch in the Dallas area in Plano, at Preston Road and Park Boulevard the last week of October. A spokesman said that their target opening date is October 27.
HDYR was founded in Austin in 2008 by brothers Yuen and Peter Yung, under the name Maki, with the goal of making ultra-fresh sushi with a wide selection of ingredients. Their unique angle was to give sushi a Chipotle-like approach to ordering, with affordable sushi made to order before your eyes. In addition to sushi, they also serve grilled chicken, beef, soy wraps and seaweed salad.
Their fortunes rose when they made it onto an episode of Shark Tank in February 2013. They've since expanded beyond Austin to Florida, Arizona, Arkansas and Chicago.
More recently, they've added hand rolls (which they call "cones") to the menu, along with dumplings, edamame, rice and noodle bowls, and stuffed avocados. Unusual sushi rolls include one with tuna, avocado, cucumber and jalapeño, with a spicy mayo; the unagi roll with eel, cucumber and avocado; and the "slammin' salmon roll" with salmon, cream cheese, jalapeño and seasonal fruit.
They also have a build-your-own bento box, as well as a dessert cone with white rice, mandarin oranges, strawberries and Nutella.
The Plano location, at the southwest corner of Park and Preston behind Chase bank, will feature a full-service bar; more branches are planned for Dallas-Fort Worth over the next few years.
