    Masterful Fundraising

First-time gala for major Dallas museum turns out to be a masterpiece

    Jennifer Chininis
    Oct 18, 2018 | 1:45 pm

The weather gods were on the side of charity October 13, when the rain subsided just in time for the Masterpiece Gala benefiting the Meadows Museum at SMU. The timing of this inaugural black-tie fundraiser was precise: to coincide with the exhibition “Dali: Poetics of the Small.” And the work of the legendary Spanish artist inspired the event’s theme, The Color of Dreams.

The evening began festively, with cocktails and dance performances by SMU students. But the real treat was the pre-dinner private concert by Joaquín Achúcarro and Andrés Díaz, both professors at SMU Meadows School of the Arts. This marked the first time the two masters performed together. Cellist Díaz began with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude, Suite No. 2 in D Minor. Pianist Achúcarro joined him for Camille Saint-Saëns’ "The Swan." Achúcarro closed out the program with Polonaise No. 6 in A-flat Major, Op. 53 by Frédéric Chopin.

Dinner followed in the museum galleries, at tables appointed with gorgeous floral centerpieces by Fleurt by Margaret Ryder. Guests settled in for three artful courses — roasted pumpkin ravioli with lobster butter sauce, beef tenderloin with purple potato cake and braised greens, and chocolate crémeux with lavender ice cream and almond cookies — prepared by Cassandra Fine Catering. The meal was accompanied by Spanish wines, of course.

The party continued after dinner, with dancing and live music by Cuvee. By night’s end, chairwoman Pilar Henry and honorary chairs (and presenting sponsors) Peggy and Carl Sewell must have been pleased — not only by the smiles on attendees’ faces, but also by the $700,000 raised. The majority of the proceeds from the Masterpiece Gala establish a $2 million endowment for the Meadow Museum’s director of education position.

Spotted among the art-appreciating patrons were Meadows Museum director Mark Roglán and wife Kathleen, Linda and Bill Custard, Agustin Arteaga, Ashley and Chris Kleinert, Bess and Ted Enloe, Caren Prothro, Capera Ryan, and Rebecca Fletcher.

The Meadows Museum dates back to 1962, when Dallas businessman and philanthropist Algur H. Meadows donated funds to establish a museum at SMU to house his private collection of Spanish paintings. Today, the Meadows Museum is the premier destination for Spanish art outside of Spain, made possible through the continued support of the Meadows Foundation and international relationships like the one forged with the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid.

    Another Round

Symphony supporters savor wine + music by candlelight at Dallas fundraiser

On November 6, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League made beautiful music at the Meyerson Symphony Center with its annual Savor the Symphony fundraising event. This year's theme was a candlelight tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein, the songwriting team behind such Golden Age musicals as Oklahoma!, Carousel, The Sound of Music, and The King and I.

Proceeds from the elegant dinner and concert benefit the Dallas Symphony Association and its education and community outreach programs: DSO on the Go, Community Concerts and Performances, Cecil and Ida Green Youth Concerts, Symphony Yes!, DSO Kids, and the Kim Noltemy Young Musicians and Young Strings Program.

Two Young Strings alumni, Carlos Vargas (cello) and Alex Villalobos (viola), serenaded guests as they arrived for the al fresco cocktail hour in the Meyerson's McIntyre Park.

While the guests, dressed to the nines despite it being merely a Thursday, mingled in the gorgeously temperate weather, preparations carried on inside for the lobby's gasp-worthy reveal.

More than 3,000 flameless candles cascaded down the Meyerson's main staircase and landing, bathing the Italian travertine marble and limestone in a soft glow.

Event co-chairs Reagan Pace, Sheridan Reeder, and Sunie Solomon and DSOL president Claire Catrino welcomed guests to the intimate gathering, for which Laurie Sands Harrison and her daughters Caroline Harrison Loehr, Francis Brito Harrison, Bailey Harrison, and Hassie Harrison served as honorary co-chairs. The Compass School of Texas was the evening's presenting sponsor.

A selection of Adair Family Wines complemented the multi-course dinner, during which Motoi Takeda (violin), Nora Scheller (violin), Sarah Sung (viola), and Theodore Harvey (cello) played a selection of Rodgers and Hammerstein's beloved hits.

A spirited live auction closed out the evening, with guests bidding on diamond hoops from Bachendorf's, a stay at the St. Regis in Aspen, a private dinner for 10 with Knife Italian Steak chef John Tesar, an Argentinian dove hunt, a case of luxury wines, and a Fender guitar autographed by the Oak Ridge Boys and more country legends.

DSOL's next big fundraising event will be the the 40th Presentation Ball on February 21, 2026 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center; 42 local young women will make their debut.
