Downtown Dallas venue to become county's biggest polling site for Presidential election
Following the August 28 announcement that American Airlines Center would serve as a polling place in the upcoming 2020 election, officials have released full details on the efforts they will devote to helping Dallas County residents vote, including being open for early voting, October 13-30.
The venue will serve as the largest polling place in Dallas County for both early voting and Election Day, Tuesday, November 3. Dallas County residents are permitted to vote at any location in the county, not just those in their precincts.
"We are proud to partner with the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars, and Dallas County to transform American Airlines Center into the largest polling location for Dallas County residents," Dave Brown, American Airlines Center COO and General Manager, says in a release. "Our team is eager and committed to providing a safe and accessible in-person voting experience for the community."
Voters will be able to park for free at the Lexus Parking Garage. The venue also promises a safe, indoor environment to comply with the guidelines put forth by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Voters without access to vehicles of their own can take advantage of complimentary transit services system-wide from Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) on October 17, October 24, or November 3. DART provides direct access for riders to Victory Station, which is adjacent to American Airlines Center, via the Green Line, Orange Line, and Trinity Railway Express (TRE).
In addition, on Election Day, Uber will help people find their polling location within the Uber app and offer discounted rides to and from the polls.
The Mavericks will host a drive-through registration event in the parking lot of their offices on September 22, National Voter Registration Day, from 7 am-2 pm. The Mavericks' offices are located across from the arena at 1333 N. Stemmons Fwy. The last day to register to be eligible to vote on Election Day is Monday, October 5.
“Every voice matters,” Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, says in the release. “Every citizen has the fundamental right to vote in the election and we are doing our part by offering up the largest polling place in the county. We encourage everyone to register who is eligible and vote early starting October 13.”
Because of the arena’s size and central location, American Airlines Center and County staff are calling on all volunteers, both English and Spanish speakers, to work the polls for both early voting and election day. Those interested can register to become an early voting officer or election day worker at dallascountyvotes.org.
Election Day workers should be available to work a minimum of 12 hours on Election Day. Early Voting workers should be available to work for approximately two weeks, including the weekend. Shifts typically will not exceed 40 hours per week.
