Bling master Sam Moon to open downtown hotel in Dallas Arts District

Sam Moon, best known for fabulously cheap bling, is opening a hotel in downtown Dallas. The company will open a JW Marriott hotel on the edge of the Arts District at 2000 Ross Ave.

It'll be a 15-floor hotel with 283 rooms, and it's a cunning construction in that it will be built atop of an existing 10-level parking garage.

According to a release, it'll open in February 2022.

This is not the first hotel for the Sam Moon Group, which has developed several hotels in Dallas-Fort Worth, including the Renaissance Dallas at Plano Legacy West; Hyatt Regency Stonebriar in Frisco; and Hyatt Place Fort Worth/Alliance Town Center.

But this one has a super location, says Sam Moon Group VP Daniel Moon.

"The location of the hotel and its walkability to nearby city attractions, offices, restaurants and entertainment venues, along with the hotel’s resort-style amenities, food and beverage options and luxurious rooms beginning on the 14th floor with sweeping views will draw visitors and residents to the area," Moon says in a statement. "We look forward to introducing the JW Marriott brand to the City of Dallas and witnessing the impact it has on the area and the city as a whole."

It will come with a grand ballroom and meeting space, spa, restaurant, lobby bar, fitness center, and rooftop pool deck and bar.

The restaurant will be located within the sky lobby on the 11th floor and will feature indoor and outdoor seating facing the Dallas Museum of Art, providing what the release calls unbeatable views of the city. Is the DMA that picturesque?

True to hotel needs, breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served.

An urban bar fashioned after New York and Chicago street level hotel bars will be located on ground level, welcoming hotel guests and passersby.

An urban bar is all well and good but can it come with a small jewelry outlet in the lobby? Priorities.

The design will feature modern lines warmed by touches of nature, and is being done by Dallas-based Looney & Associates.

It doesn't need to be said that the hotel will be within walking distance of Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, Crow Museum of Asian Art, Winspear Opera House, Klyde Warren Park, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Moody Performance Hall, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and Belo Mansion.

Sam Moon Group was founded in 1984 and has become a hot destination for wholesale women’s accessories and handbags. The company now operates in a variety of industries ranging from retail to commercial real estate. And hotels.

Dallas signs off on lease on UNT campus for police training academy

The Dallas City Council approved a lease with the University of North Texas Dallas campus for a proposed Dallas Police Training Academy. The lease paves the way for the development of a new Law Enforcement Training Center and Criminal Justice Center on a 20-acre site at UNT-Dallas, part of the City’s efforts to modernize police training and deepen academic partnerships.

The new facility, which was first proposed in 2021, will house the Dallas Police Department’s Basic and In-Service Training Academy, along with a Criminal Justice Center, creating a centralized, state-of-the-art campus for officer development.

Training spaces will include modern classrooms, indoor simulation labs, and areas for defensive tactics instruction.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to preparing officers through modern, state of the art, community-connected training,” said Dominique Artis, Dallas Chief of Public Safety. “The combination of a police academy and Criminal Justice Center at a university campus enhances recruitment, education, and public trust.”

Benefits of the Law Enforcement Training Center and Criminal Justice Center include

    • Academic Partnership: Collaboration with UNT-Dallas opens doors for research, continuing education, and career pathways for both officers and students alike - creating a pipeline to future cadets and expanding opportunities for local talent
    • .Modern Training Facilities: The campus will feature simulation environments, flexible classroom space, and the latest instructional technology.
    • Strategic Location: As the first police training academy in southern Dallas, the project brings long-term public investment to the area.
    • Dual-Campus Model: This site complements a planned Public Safety Complex elsewhere in Dallas that will serve as a field training location for both DPD and Dallas Fire-Rescue.

According to KERA, the training academy is estimated to cost $185 million, plus $90 million for the public safety complex, for a total of $275 million. There is currently $96.5 million committed including $50 million from the 2024 Bond Program passed by the voters in May 2024, along with state grants, money from the Caruth Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas, and private fundraising commitments. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
