Sugar high
Run your sweet tooth off at these sugar-fueled Dallas races
If you've made a vow to resist sugary treats, you might want to give up now. Two upcoming races — the Hypnotic Donut Dash and the Hot Chocolate RAM Series Race — are sure to blow that no-sugar resolution. However, you can walk or run off those calories, so that's at least one resolution intact.
Even though the organizers of the Hypnotic Donut Dash at Fair Park tell us that you don't have to eat your way through a dozen to win, there are three doughnut hole stations set up throughout the course. At the end of the 5K, a doughnut party replete with live music, sugary treats and beer await the athletes — assuming their stomachs can handle it.
When you pick up your packet, you get a Jaguar chip to time your race and a pretty cool T-shirt as a keepsake. Register online before January 25 and pay $30, or sign up on race day — January 26 — for $35.
The Hot Chocolate 15/5K at the Cotton Bowl February 9 is dubbed "America's sweetest race." Although running a 5K is doable, signing up for a 15K (9.3 miles) seems anything but sweet. But sugary incentives include a sweatshirt in your goody bag and a finisher's mug full of treats such as hot chocolate (duh), a banana with chocolate sauce, and marshmallows.
It's important to note that when you sign up for the race — whether you run the shorter course or you're in it for the long haul — you're promising to keep your pace at or under a 15-minute mile. (We might have to reconsider what that chocolate-y goody bag is worth.)
However, we commend these Hot Chocolate folks, who are as serious about giving back as they are about keeping everyone on task. The race benefits the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Register online to sign up. The 15K is $68; it's $48 for the 5K.
