Pandas, Butterflies And Dinosaurs, Oh My

Perot Museum partners with National Geographic for wild new fun

    May 23, 2014 | 12:15 pm

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science has announced a partnership with National Geographic, one that positions the museum to bring in a host of elements that will enhance its already acclaimed status.

The partnership, initially set at five years, is one of only a few Nat Geo has with museums in the United States. It is the only one in Texas.

The partnership has already yielded one significant change: The Hoglund Foundation Theater, the state-of-the-art 3-D theater at the Perot, has been rebranded as "a National Geographic Experience." The name change comes complete with a sign bearing Nat Geo's signature bright yellow at the entrance.

Starting May 24, the theater will be showing Pandas: The Journey Home, a 40-minute original National Geographic documentary that tracks the efforts of Chinese scientists to boost the number of pandas in the wild.

More aspects of the partnership include other regional movie premieres, special access to Nat Geo's film library, a speakers series, visits from Nat Geo experts and special traveling exhibits created by Nat Geo. In addition there will be photography workshops, travel opportunities, and special benefits and discounts for Perot Museum members.

The museum also will be showing two non-Nat Geo films this summer. The first is Flight of the Butterflies 3D, which follows the annual migration of monarch butterflies. Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia, is a look back at when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, which has been at the museum since early April.

That second film is a nice combo with the Perot's current traveling exhibit, "The World's Largest Dinosaurs," both of which will be at the museum through September 1. Anyone wanting to see both can save a little money by bundling the tickets together, with tickets ranging from $19-$25, including museum admission.

Tickets for Pandas are $6 for members and $8 for non-members, while the other two shorter films are $5 for both members and non-members. Admission to the museum is not necessary to view the films; tickets can always be purchased separately.

The bright yellow National Geographic sign just inside the entrance at the Perot Museum is hard to miss.

Revered Dallas holiday tradition Trains at NorthPark seeks volunteers

One of the traditions of the holiday season in Dallas is seeking volunteers: The Ronald McDonald House of Dallas is seeking volunteers for The Trains at NorthPark, the beloved holiday exhibition featuring an array of model trains rolling across 1,600 feet on a miniature cross-country journey.

Now in its 38th year, this fundraising tradition will return to NorthPark Center on Saturday, November 15, 2025, and run through Sunday, January 4, 2026.

RMHD is currently recruiting volunteers to support the eight-week exhibit. Volunteers are most needed during the week, and will assist with greeting guests, monitoring the exhibit, selling tickets and merchandise, and helping families create holiday memories.

Presented by Bank of Texas for the 17th consecutive year, The Trains at NorthPark helps support RMHD’s mission of providing a home-away-from-home for families with children receiving critical medical treatment at Dallas-area hospitals.

“Volunteers are the heart of this event,” says Ronald McDonald House of Dallas CEO Jill Cumnock in a release. "Their time and energy help support our mission of keeping families close to the care their children need."

Volunteering for the event is open to individuals, school groups, corporate teams, and families looking for a way to give back during the holiday season. Volunteers must be 15 years or older and can sign up for shifts online through the Trans at NorthPark website.

“Whether you volunteer one shift or come back every week, your presence makes a difference,” said Jane Finan, volunteer services manager at RMHD. “We simply couldn’t make this event happen without our dedicated volunteers who generously give their time to support our families and spread holiday cheer.”

In addition to volunteer opportunities, The Trains at NorthPark will feature several new attractions this year, including the Art on the Rails auction and Choo-Choo Tales live story-time performances, as well as Sensory Hours made possible by Children’s Health. The exhibit will be located on Level One in NorthPark Center.
