    He's a survivor

Michael Kors prepares for the apocalypse with chic battle-ready collection

    Clifford Pugh
    Feb 14, 2013 | 8:16 am

When the apocalypse comes, I want to be around Michael Kors. Because when the end of the world is approaching, you want to look super chic, and Kors has everything for the occasion.

Even though things are going really well for the designer — his company reported record profits on Tuesday — Kors is in survival mode.

His fall 2013 collection, unveiled at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Wednesday, features mink stoles, jackets and trousers in camouflage patterns of white, black and blue. Coats come in traffic-stopping colors of taxicab yellow, safety orange and stoplight red. Perforated skirts and pullovers of rubberized fabric are meant for urban animals.

What to wear to outrun the zombies? Why, a pair of bright yellow track pants with black leather tuxedo stripe, of course.

And what to wear to outrun the zombies? Why, a pair of bright yellow track pants with black leather tuxedo stripe, of course.

Instead of full-on evening gowns, the collection features short peplum skirts in shades of neon orange and royal blue with long trains. So what if they look a little Atlantic City-cocktail waitressy? They make a statement.

Surviving Superstorm Sandy last fall apparently got Kors thinking about survival — in a chic way — just as he was planning the collection in a city that was half cast in darkness. According to his program notes, the result is "urban athleticism meets uptown polish ... an attitude basked on speed, endurance and glamour."

The only real glitter came from a crystal peplum gown with train that model-of-the-moment Karlie Kloss wore to close the show, yet the collection has a lot of flash. And because it has Kors' name on it, fabrics are luxe. Just the name "cashgora" — a fabric that combines cashmere and angora — sounds rich.

At the end of the show, when Kors took his victory lap past a celebrity row that included Jada Pinkett Smith and daughter Willow Smith, Michael Douglas, Zoe Saldana, and Hilary Swank, his walk practically became a jog.

He's clearly a man in a hurry — and it doesn't look like he's going to slow down anytime soon — apocalypse or not.

After much persuasion from Dallas officials, the downtown location of Neiman Marcus will stay open — for now.

According to a release, Saks Global will continue operations of the Neiman Marcus Downtown Dallas store through the 2025 Holiday season while it explores a reimagination of the location in collaboration with the City of Dallas.

City officials met with Saks Global leadership to discuss the potential of a new, innovative format to serve its customers and the community while supporting the resurgence of Downtown Dallas.

Potential concepts for the reimagined space include a luxury retail experience, a curated art exhibition, and a fashion and event center.

Other proposals for the space also include an incubator for fashion design and manufacturing in Downtown Dallas.

“We deeply admire the city's passion and unwavering dedication to Neiman Marcus’ storied legacy in Dallas. The potential reimagination of this iconic shopping destination reinforces Saks Global’s commitment to redefining the luxury shopping experience,” said Marc Metrick, Chief Executive Officer of Saks Global. “As we explore opportunities for the Downtown store, along with the planned renovation at the NorthPark store, we will evaluate the opportunity to utilize both locations to serve different customer needs in the Dallas market.”

“We are excited that Saks Global has decided to keep Neiman Marcus open downtown, as we explore the opportunity to unlock the potential to transform downtown into an international beacon and economic engine for fashion - just as the Neiman Marcus founders intended when they opened the store more than 100 years ago,” said Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “We look forward to exploring what‘s on the horizon and are committed to continuing our conversations with the Saks Global team.”

The Zodiac Room and the Bridal Salon will remain open during the exploratory period.

The Neiman Marcus brand has been an integral part of Dallas for over a century, serving as a cornerstone of the community and a symbol of style and innovation.

Since 1907, Neiman Marcus has shaped the city’s fashion landscape while fostering deep connections through charitable giving, cultural contributions, and civic engagement. Saks Global remains deeply committed to Dallas, honoring its rich history while continually looking ahead to a vibrant future.
