For the first time, a leading Austin-based architecture office is offering pro-bono services to nonprofits in the Dallas area: Michael Hsu Office of Architecture (MHOA) has launched its fifth annual Design for All initiative with applications open through May 15.

MHOA is looking for a registered 501(c)(3) located within 50 miles Austin, Houston, and for the first time, Dallas-Fort Worth. The nonprofit chosen will receive a grant covering $20,000 of design services; that might include things like a site analysis, a preliminary floor plan, or a proposal for a work plan, according to a press release.

MHOA's work is well known, especially among Austin's restaurant scene. The firm has worked on Uchi's restaurant portfolio, along with visually striking buildings belonging to Loro, Uptown Sports Club, P. Terry's, and more.

The goal of the Design for All Initiative is to help local nonprofits deliver more fully on their community work by giving them more functional spaces to work from.

“Working on Design For All projects reminds us why we became designers,” says MHOA senior associate Chet Morgan in the release. “This work serves as a reminder that thoughtful collaboration can unlock new possibilities long before construction begins.”

Last year's recipient was American YouthWorks, which used its grant to update its existing space, which it had "outgrown," according to a release at the time. Other past recipients include Central Texas Table of Grace (2024), Abigail E. Keller Foundation (2024), The Women’s Home and Children’s Assessment Center (2023), and Austin Angels (2022).

“Design For All has become one of the most meaningful ways we connect our work to the communities we care about,” says MHOA founder and principle Michael Hsu. “With our first Design For All project for Austin Angels completing construction this year, we’re especially proud of how the program continues to grow. As we prepare to open applications for this year’s program, we’re excited to meet the next nonprofit that’s prepared to imagine great possibilities with the support of design.”

Interested nonprofits can submit applications through Google Forms.

MHOA offers the following timeline for the process going forward:

  • Call for Entries – March 10
  • Questions due – April 10
  • Q&A posted on website – April 24
  • Submission Deadline – May 15 at 5 p.m. CT
  • Shortlist Interviews – June 8-19
  • Partnership announced – June 26

More information about the Design for All initiative, including more specific eligibility requirements, is available at hsuoffice.com.

Madisonville Christmas Company is opening a new store in Plano.

A beloved holiday superstore near Houston is loading up its sleigh with trees and ornaments and heading up Interstate 45: Madisonville Christmas Company will open a store in Plano in September, just in time for the 2026 holiday season.

The company revealed the new store on social media with few details, including exact location. However, eagle-eyed viewers of the announcement reel easily identified the building as the former Weir's Furniture store at 5801 Preston Rd., Plano. Weir's closed all stores in March 2026.

"The magic of Madisonville Christmas Company is headed to Plano!" the post says. "This holiday season, we’re bringing our special brand experience to North Texas — filled with the incredible ornaments, ribbon, décor, designer inspiration and Christmas magic you’ve come to expect from Madisonville Christmas Company."

They promise "thousands of ornaments, incredible ribbon, Christmas decor in every color and style, and designer inspiration."

An exact opening date will be revealed soon, they say.

The original Madisonville Christmas Company is officially located at 3475 TX-21 Ste. 300, off I-45, in Madisonville, north of Houston. But popularly, it's known as the Christmas store across the street from the Madisonville Buc-ee's.

It's a 25,000-square-foot holiday store carrying more than 6,000 ornaments and other Christmas decorations.

The showroom, called The Mantel, carries ornaments, décor, ribbon, lighting, and gifts in styles ranging from traditional to contemporary.

The store is open seasonally from August through December, while its online shop operates year-round. The company also offers design services and custom holiday creations.

It even has a festive campground, called Yuletide RV Park, with RV hook-ups and cabins, for extended stays and shopping excursions.
