This Week in Gluttony

Boozy chocolate pairings top best food and drink events in Dallas

Diana Oates
Feb 10, 2014 | 2:52 pm

Alas, Valentine's Day week is upon us. That means only another week before restaurants can stop touting romantic, fixed-price menus and start serving the good, regular-priced stuff again.

Surprisingly, there are a few legit events going on this week outside of the obvious Hallmark holiday celebrations. From a Japanese whiskey tasting to a meet-and-greet with Rip Esselstyn, This Week in Gluttony has you sated.

Tuesday, February 11

Rip Esselstyn Book Signing at Whole Foods
Meet Rip Esselstyn, author of the New York Times bestseller The Engine 2 Diet, who created the simple diet — fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds — after discovering the dangerously high cholesterol level of one of his fellow firefighters in Austin. You have two chances to visit with the author: February 11, 5-8 pm, at the Whole Foods Market in Arlington, or February 12, 5-7 pm, at the Whole Foods Market on Park Lane in Dallas. You can also sample Engine 2 dishes created by chef John Mercer. The event is free, and there are no reservations required.

Thursday, February 13

Sublime Chocolate and Wine Pairing at Veritas
Allen-based Sublime Chocolate and DallasChocolate.org are teaming up for a wine and chocolate pairing event at Veritas starting at 6:30 pm. Samples wines selected by Travis James and taste chocolates from Troy Easton, who was the first in the Dallas area to make bean-to-bar chocolates such as curry bon bon, caliente bon bon and caramel sea salt bon bon. It costs $25 per person, but no advance reservations are required.

Northern and Southern Rhone Wine Tasting at Sigel's Elite
Sigel's Elite on Fitzhugh Avenue is hosting a free tasting of wines from Northern and Southern Rhone from 5-7 pm. The 2010 vintage in the Rhone Valley produced superlative wines, and the store invites you to taste the last of this vintage before it disappears. You can RSVP online or by calling 214-635-3162.

Sunday, February 16

Japanese Whiskey and Chocolate Tasting at Tei-An
Tei-An in One Arts Plaza is pairing one of Japan's greatest whiskies, Nikka, with chocolate. This event starts at 5:30 pm and costs $30 for a flight of three or $50 for all six. Tei-An also will serve specialty cocktails made with Nikka throughout the evening. Make reservations by calling 214-220-2828.

Monday, February 17

Goldschmidt Wine Dinner at Jasper’s
Head out to Jasper's in Plano for a five-course dinner with Goldschmidt winemaker Nick Goldschmidt. Dishes — guanabana-marinated hamachi ceviche “spoons,” caviar beggar's purse, salmon “pastrami,” lamb shank, strip loin with smoked shallot bread pudding and broccoli rabe, polenta pound cake with strawberries and whipped mascarpone — are paired with wines from Goldschmidt's portfolio. It's $95 per person, and reservations can be made by calling 972-673-0823.

Sample wines from Northern and Southern Rhone at Sigel's on February 13.

French twist

Downtown Dallas hotel restaurant reopens following major revamp

Toast at CBD Provisions

There's new dining action in downtown Dallas at the Joule Hotel: CBD Provisions, the hotel's inhouse restaurant, has officially reopened with a new chef, menu, and interior design, following a months-long update.

The restaurant has been closed since July 2025. It originally opened in 2013 as a Texas-centric brasserie, named for downtown's Central Business District. It became most famous for its Pig's Head Carnitas, featuring one half of a pig's head on a plate, requiring diners to pull strips of meat and tuck them into tortillas — a dish that, with its sharable interactive nature, was ahead of its time.

According to a release, the restaurant returns under the direction of new culinary director Sezer Deniz, who has 20-plus years of experience working at Michelin-starred restaurants including the acclaimed Alinea in Chicago.

Deniz, who trained under Chef Jean Paul Naquin of the Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon, France, is debuting a menu that focuses more carefully on French technique.

“CBD Provisions has long been about honoring local ingredients and our community,” Deniz says in a statement. “With this reopening, we’ve refined that vision, creating a dining experience that is both familiar and fresh."

Food
The menu will keep the pig’s head carnitas as well as pimento cheese toast, another favorite. But new dishes include:

  • Ancho Beef Bourguignon, a classic French dish featuring beef braised in a red wine reduction with ancho chili, pearl onions, carrots, wild mushrooms, and horseradish spaetzle.
  • Asado Short Rib, with three barbecue-glazed ribs, bread & butter pickled vegetables, sweet potato mousse, and pecan topping.

Daily fresh-baked breads, including buns and sourdough, will be provided by The Commissary, the nearby bakery-cafe that is a sibling concept from Headington Cos.

The beverage program will highlight small producers and regional makers with wines from Texas, California, and France; craft beers from Dallas-Fort Worth brewers; and cocktails such as the Good Word, a mezcal-based take on the Last Word cocktail.

Decor
With exposed brick, wood floors, and steel beans, the design preserves the classic brasserie soul of the space while softening its industrial roots with millwork paneling, vintage lighting, and mosaic tile floors.

Stone tabletops and antique mirrors add warmth, while layered textiles in seating and drapery create an atmosphere of comfort. New seating includes communal high-top tables, a center banquette, and railcar booth seating. A new airy bar opens up the space.

It's open daily for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner from 7 am-10 pm, and until 11 pm on Friday-Saturday.
