Dallas grabs a new slice with arrival of Seattle pizzeria chain
Another pizza chain is settling in Dallas-Fort Worth, and this one's a keeper: Mod Pizza, known for pioneering the individual artisan pizza concept, has opened its first D/FW location in DFW in Prosper, and according to a spokesperson, a second will open in McKinney in August.
Mod was founded in Seattle in 2008 by husband-and-wife Scott and Ally Svenson. They were the first to do the quick, fast-casual pizza experience, like a pizza version of Chipotle, where you go down a line and choose your toppings and get your individually sized pizza baked in minutes.
Mod could easily be confused with Modern Market, the healthy-ish chain from Colorado, which used to be called Modmarket until they were forced to change their name. It's just as well; "Modmarket" was a dumb name. Anyway, Modern Market does have pizza but it's just one of many items.
Mod's standard pizzas are 11 inches, with original crust or "gluten-friendly." But you can also get an adorable 6-inch mini size or a "mega-dough" version with a thick crust.
Sauces include BBQ sauce, garlic rub, pesto, red, and white. Cheeses include mozzarella, parmesan, ricotta, gorgonzola, feta, asiago, and even a dairy-free.
Mod has a dozen or so suggested combinations but also lets you make your own choose from over 30 toppings, and the price stays the same no matter what you pick.
Veggies include artichokes, arugula, basil, black olives, peppers, pineapple, corn, roasted grapes, spinach, and tomatoes.
Meats include pepperoni, Italian sausage in mild or spicy, salami, grilled chicken, ground beef, and bacon.
"Finishes" include options such as fig-balsamic glaze, hot buffalo sauce, sriracha, and ranch.
Mod Pizza currently has 40-plus locations in Texas, in Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, which are all the cities where CultureMap has sites. They have great taste. They will now focus on developing the Metroplex area for the next several years.
Mod Prosper is in the Windsong Ranch Shopping Center at 4780 West University Dr.
Mod McKinney South is at 3009 South Cluster Rd.
Mod has two more locations set to open later in the fall: the Saginaw area of Fort Worth, at 4540 W Bailey Boswell Rd.; and Midlothian, which is sorta DFW-ish, at 2210 FM 663.
Co-founder and CEO Scott Svenson says in a release that, aside from their pizza, they also want to have a positive effect on the world.
"Our motivation to grow Mod has always been driven by our desire to make a positive social impact on as many lives as possible," he says. "For us, this means offering job and career growth opportunities to those who face barriers to employment, along with supporting local non-profits that are working to build stronger communities. We believe it is possible to build a strong sustainable business while putting people first, and we’re really excited to bring our unique culture to Dallas."
