This roundup of Dallas dining news is a doozy, with 30 news tidbits, ranging from new openings to new chefs to news about supermarket mergers — some culled from press releases, some pulled off the world-wide web. If there's a prevailing theme, it's autumn, with just about everyone introducing new seasonal menus for fall.
Here's what's happening in Dallas restaurant news:
Foxtrot, the cafe-market concept, opens its third Dallas location at 3130 Knox St. on October 26, offering its signature all-day café experience, with coffee, cafe drinks, smoothies, breakfast tacos, salads, bowls, and grab-and-go meals for lunch and dinner. The store sells craft beer, fine wines, and everyday essentials - more than 175 local products from over 50 local makers, including Hail Mary, CocoAndré, Oak Cliff Coffee, Teasom, Joy Macarons, and Basia’s Pickles. Foxtrot debuted in Dallas in 2019 in Uptown at 2822 McKinney Ave., followed by a second Dallas location at 6565 Hillcrest Ave.
The French Room at the Adolphus hotel reopened for dinner on October 13 after a two-year hiatus, with "Be Our Guest Chef," a limited dinner series featuring guest chefs. The first chef is Laurent Quenoix, whose opening menu included chanterelles foie gras torchon with roasted quince, Maine lobster with cabbage & watercress & spicy Chinese relish, Dover sole with sweet potato mousse, risotto with truffles, venison “noisette” with date puree, chocolate bar dessert, and a cheese plate with rye crackers. The series takes place on select days in October, November, and January. Diners who attended opening night were escorted to a seating area to wait, and the restaurant added a gratuity on a price fixe menu for a table of two.
Curry Pizza House, a new pizzeria with an Indian flair, opened on October 15 at 5266 Independence Pkwy. #100 in Frisco. Since its launch in 2012, Curry Pizza House has grown to 11 locations across California and Texas, including Austin where they opened in 2021, with additional locations coming soon in Irving and Richardson.
Snooze an A.M. Eatery opened its first Frisco location at 9169 Dallas Pkwy. on October 12. The Denver-based chain specializes in innovative breakfasts including signature pineapple upside down pancakes, Benedicts like the habanero pork belly benny, breakfast sandwiches, omelets, breakfast tacos, pancake flights, plant-based plates including bravocado toast and tofu scramble, and a full bar with cocktails, beer, and spiked coffee. The Frisco location was previously a Super Chix. It seats 115 inside with 34 seats on a covered patio.
Cheba Hut, the laid-back marijuana-themed sub shop known for its excellent "toasted subs," is opening a location in the perfect town for this concept: Denton, where it'll open on Monday, October 17 at 1611 West Eagle Dr. #109, less than a mile from UNT. The shop is from franchisee Bhavik Bhakta who knew Denton would be a great location for a new shop because it fits the expressive culture of Cheba Hut with artwork, music festivals, and more.
Hawaiian Bros, a chain specializing in the traditional Hawaiian plate lunch, is opening a location in Murphy, in a former Wachovia Bank building at 203 FM 544, on October 18.
Tiger Sugar, a boba tea shop chain founded in Taiwan in 2017 and known for its brown sugar boba straked with syrup, is opening a location in Plano at 101 W Spring Creek Pkwy. #735, at the NW corner of US-75, in the same center as 99 Ranch Market: A location in Carrollton opened in 2020.
Sweetgreen has brought back three seasonal favorites: Curry Cauliflower, featuring cauliflower with blackened chicken, cabbage, cilantro, raisins, quinoa, and arugula, topped with sweetgreen hot sauce and peppercorn tahina dressing; Chicken & Brussels salad with more blackened chicken, Brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, quinoa, Romaine, apples, almonds, and cranberry maple vinaigrette; and a Buffalo cauliflower side dish with curry roasted cauliflower, crispy rice, caesar dressing, and hot sauce. Available through January 11.
Knife Dallas has new menu items including roasted chicken, panzanella salad, broiled Maine lobster, prawns, whole fish in a variety of preparations, and house-made pasta including pasta Bolognese, rigatoni with truffle, and bucatini cacio e pepe.
Dive Coastal Cuisine in Snider Plaza has new specials for October including the Spicy Dive Wedge with spiced pecans, cherry tomatoes, chives, and bacon; Shrimp Enchiladas with tomatillo sauce; Manhattan red clam chowder; market fish such as halibut, Texas redfish, and mahi mahi; and a seasonal spaghetti squash side.
Thirsty Lion Gastropub has a new seasonal menu served through mid-February. Dishes include bacon-wrapped medjool dates stuffed with gorgonzola cream cheese, beer steamed shrimp, arugula & beet salad with chicken, Wagyu beef burger, shrimp pad Thai with tamarind coconut sauce, black cherry BBQ pork tenderloin, coffee-crusted braised beef, whiskey Bing cherry bread pudding, and cocktails including Maple Old Fashioned and Tito’s Winter White Cosmopolitan. At four locations in Irving, Euless, The Colony, and Walnut Hill Ln. in Dallas.
Electric Shuffle has new menu items for fall including boneless wings, chicken & pineapple skewers, crispy pork egg rolls, buffalo chicken quesadilla, sliders, a pizza with prosciutto, pear, & goat cheese, and chocolate chip cannoli, plus a quintet of new cocktails such as Son of a Peach with mezal, peach, and citrus.
RaceTrac has brought back its Waffle Breakfast Sandwich, featuring sausage, egg, and cheese between two waffles. The sandwich became a customer favorite when it was initially introduced for a short period in November 2021. Priced at $3.69, the Waffle Breakfast Sandwich is at most RaceTrac stores between 6-10 am, available now through January 31, 2023, or while supplies last.
Fuzzy's Taco Shop has added a Saucy Brisket Poblano Taco to its menu, featuring shredded brisket drizzled with special Butt Burnin’ sauce blended with Dr Pepper, topped with poblano peppers, pickled red onions, avocado, garlic sauce, feta, and cilantro on a flour tortilla, available at participating locations through November 20.
Cotton Patch Cafe has new seasonal specials available until November 4 including meatloaf sliders with tomato glaze and pepper jack cheese with french fries; Southwest chicken salad with shredded cheese, mandarin oranges, spring mix greens, corn, pico de gallo, tortilla strips, and honey-lime dressing; and triple grilled cheese with cheddar, pepper jack, and American cheese on Texas toast with fries.
Carrabba’s Italian Grill has a new seasonal menu featuring spaghetti carbonara with chicken; pork chops stuffed with fontina & prosciutto, topped with mushrooms and Lombardo Marsala sauce, and served with two sides; Stuffed Mushrooms stuffed with sausage, spinach, ricotta, parmesan, Romano, and mozzarella, served over tomato cream sauce; New York-style cheesecake topped with caramel apples and toasted cinnamon pecans; and a Blood Orange Margarita.
Whataburger has a new Whataburger Chili Cheese Burger featuring two patties, two slices of American cheese, beef chili, corn chips, mustard, and onions on a toasted five-inch bun. It's available for a limited time, how long they do not say.
DQ has two cheesy limited-edition menu items available through the end of October: Cheesy Steak Fingers, infused with cream pepper jack cheese, available in a Cheesy Steak Finger Country Basket with fries, Texas toast, and ranch dressing or creamy gravy; and the Cheesy Dude sandwich, a chicken-fried steak sandwich topped with two slices of Pepper Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and creamy salad dressing on a toasted bun.
SusieCakes has special Halloween desserts throughout October including ghost and pumpkin sugar cookies, Halloween cookie decorating kits, Boo cupcakes, Halloween-themed cupcakes, mini cupcakes, and cakes decorated with a black cat, Frankenstein, pumpkins, and ghosts. The special cupcake for October is a pumpkin spice cupcake with maple buttercream. At three locations: Preston Center, Hillside Village, and River Run in Fort Worth.
Sadelle's at Highland Park Village has created a new marketplace with grab-and-go items including bagels by the dozen, smoked salmon, rotisserie chicken, tuna salad, whitefish salad, egg salad, and wine by the bottle. They've also introduced a charcuterie program.
Legacy Hall in Plano has new cocktails including the Flower Child, Modern Fashioned, Smoky Rose, Berry Bright, The Cucumberland, Pineapple Express, Foggy London, Da Funk, Urban Mojito, El Fantasma, Don’t Call Me Shirley, and the Golden Ticket, plus two alcohol-free mocktails: the Tropical Dreams and the Botanical Garden.
7-Eleven has a new Slurpee flavor for fall: Green Apple, a combination of tart and sweet that they say taste like a freshly picked apple on a crisp autumn day. It's available for a limited time, how long they do not say.
Lounge Here, the cool bar-restaurant on Garland Road, has an acclaimed new chef: Jeff Harris, who has worked in many stellar kitchens including Tom Colicchio's Craft Dallas, Bolsa, Victor Tangos, and AF+B in Fort Worth. "When the pandemic hit, I was doing corporate private dining and helped open a fried chicken shop in Canton," Harris says. "It's great to be back in the kitchen, and I love the neighborhood." Harris says they won't do a huge overhaul of the menu, letting change happen organically with specials such as pork chop with collard greens and sweet potatoes. "Lounge Here has some great staples - the deviled eggs, shrimp & grits, chicken fried rib eye, and those won't go away," he says.
Nutpods plant-based creamer has a variety pack of three flavors: Peppermint Mocha, Holiday Nog, and Pumpkin Spice for the holidays, providing a dairy-free and zero-sugar alternative to sugary drinks. The variety pack is available online, and also individually in 11.2 oz or 25.4 oz cartons in select stores and online. These are limited-time flavors, available until sold out.
Nature’s Fynd, a food company making meat and dairy alternatives, has Dairy-Free Cream Cheese now for sale in 8-ounce tubs at Sprouts Farmers Market. The cream cheese is vegan, nut-free, and soy-free, and has no artificial flavors or preservatives, and comes in two varieties: Original and Chive & Onion.
Apres Hours, a Dallas-based line of ready-to-drink canned espresso martinis that launched in August, are now available at Total Wine & More stores in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston. Après Hours is available in three dairy- and gluten-free flavors: Classic, Salted Caramel, and Vanilla.
Bread Winners Café & Bakery, the venerable local chain that introduced the concept of brunch to Dallas, has a new owner. Founders Jim and Cindy Hughes sold the brand to Josh Bock of Stratega Capital, who will take over all four locations – Uptown, Inwood Village, Northpark Center, and Plano – plus the catering division and the Quarter Bar in Uptown. Harlowe MXM and Henry’s Majestic will remain with the Hughes family. Bock plans to keep the current management team in place – which includes two of the four Hughes children and many long-time employees. Andrew Popp, Bread Winners' current COO, will implement strategic direction and growth.
Kroger is angling to buy Albertsons in a deal that would create a grocery giant with almost 5,000 stores. They say such a deal will give them better buying power, improve manufacturing and distribution, save on costs, and lower prices. Isn't that what they always say? The companies plan to offload as many as 375 stores through a spinoff, if they can’t find buyers. Kroger has 209 stores in TX; Albertson's has 43 stores in TX, all in DFW.
Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), an animal rights group, won a victory in court on October 8 when two members were found not guilty of stealing two sick piglets from Smithfield Foods' Circle Four Farms, a factory farm in Utah. Wayne Hsiung and Paul Picklesimer rescued the pigs, and became the target of an investigation by the FBI and the Utah attorney general’s office. The Intercept quoted defense attorney Mary Corporon, who said the trial raised questions about government agencies like the FBI performing in service to large corporations.
Texas Food & Wine Alliance (TFWA) is accepting applications for $111,500 in grants awarded to chefs, artisan producers, culinary nonprofits, and businesses. The deadline is October 23 via online submission. Winners will be announced January 21.
