Pizza, coffee and lawsuits: The 10 most popular restaurant news stories of 2012
Even though CultureMap has only been on the Dallas restaurant reporting scene since September, Teresa Gubbins has turned out her fair share of scoops and insights. Join us as we chew on the most-read restaurant news stories of 2012.
1. Cane Rosso to expand its Neapolitan pizza empire to White Rock Lake. The secret was out when owner Jay Jerrier launched a Facebook page showing slowly mounting evidence, with photos of the location, patio and magnificent oven. The White Rock Lake Cane Rosso will be more ambitious than the original, with a tap wall and a salumi/cheese bar.
2. Dallas cocktail innovator Keith LaBonte, owner of Four Lounge, passes away. The talented mixologist and owner of Four Lounge in Uptown Dallas passed away unexpectedly in November. Brian McCullough of Standard Pour called him "a passionate man, a great friend and a unique individual," whose "zest for life was inspiring" and his passing "way too soon." LaBonte was only 41.
3. Two guys, a girl and new coffee shop on McKinney Avenue. Founders Jessica Myers, Russell Aldredge and Andrew Key leased a 1,900-square-foot space on McKinney Avenue near Roti Grill to create Origin, an Uptown gathering spot for enjoying coffee and healthy bites from local purveyors.
4. Stateside Pie & Beer brings the magical combo of pizza and craft beer to hungry Mesquite. This new restaurant-bar in Mesquite, from the owners of the Carino's Italian chain, features pizza and a long list of semi-crafty beers, served in a sports-bar environment.
5. Austin's ultra-serious Houndstooth Coffee to bring baristas and beer to East Dallas. Dallas' coffee scene keeps getting bigger, and soon it'll have a taste from Austin. The ultra-cool minimalist coffee shop will open in East Dallas, at the corner of Skillman Avenue and Oram Street, in early 2013.
6. Chef Jason Boso to commandeer new food truck park on Lower Greenville. Twisted Root founder Jason Boso was appointed steward of the food truck park going in on Lower Greenville, across from Trader Joe's. Boso will also create a restaurant hub, serving Philly cheesesteaks, around which the food truck park will revolve.
7. Mi Cocina chain pursues hapless little Mi Cocina Hondurena restaurant in Garland. In a case that could only have been fueled by an overactive Google Alert, big-gun Tex-Mex chain Mi Cocina initiated a trademark infringement action against Mi Cocina Hondurena, a tiny, authentic Honduran restaurant in Garland.
8. Shinsei alumni Steve and Brandy Spence buy the Corner Bar and prep for an overhaul. Steve Spence and Brandy Davis Spence bought the venerable Corner Bar on December 7 with plans for some serious upgrades. Chef Jason Czaja, a fellow Shinsei alum, will help ramp up the quality of food on the bar menu and eventually work on a menu for the new restaurant.
9. Klyde Warren Park unveils Savor and Relish, its deliciously on-trend gastropub and food truck. Klyde Warren Park announced its upcoming culinary concepts just before the park's grand opening in October. Savor will be a gastropub; Relish, which debuted as a food truck, will be a companion kiosk offering quick food for outdoor snacking. John Coleman, formerly of the Ritz-Carlton, Dallas, was tapped to helm the two-pronged concept.
10. Joule Dallas reveals new eatery CBD Provisions, from Consilient's Tristan Simon. As part of its expansion, the Joule Dallas has partnered with Dallas-based Consilient Restaurants to open CBD Provisions, an "energetic American eatery," in spring 2013. CBD will be led by operating partner Greg Katz. Nationally renowned bartenders Chad Solomon and Christy Pope will oversee the beverage program.
