NFL legends tee up for Dallas Cowboys great's charity golf tournament
What: Cliff Harris JDRF Reunion Golf Classic
Where: Dallas Athletic Club
The 411: This year's tournament, hosted annually by Cowboys great Cliff Harris, commemorated Super Bowl XIII. For those who weren't born yet, that's the one in which the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers battled at the Orange Bowl in Miami on January 21, 1979. (Cowboys lost.)
In honor of the game, "Mean" Joe Greene, the Steelers’ defensive tackle in Super Bowl XIII and Texas native, attended the event. Other former NFL stars in attendance included Donny Anderson, Roger Staubach, DD Lewis, Mel Renfro, Mike Renfro, Rayfield Wright, Lyle Blackwood, Norm Bulaich, Gary Hammond, Chad Hennings, Preston Pearson, Kurt Petersen, and Everson Walls.
After a day full of friendly competition with lively clubhouse festivities — including a Q&A with Cliff Harris and Joe Greene, a silent and live auction, and an
awards ceremony — the funds were tallied. The tournament raised more than $330,000 in support of JDRF’s mission to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.
Harris started the golf tournament in honor of his father, O.J. “Buddy” Harris, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 24. JDRF helps advocate for government support of research and new therapies, and connects and engages the diabetes community.
