Latest on the lockout: NHL cancels third week of season, including four DallasStars games
The Dallas Stars lost four more games for the 2012-13 season on Friday, as the National Hockey League canceled all games through November 1. The announcement came shortly after the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association broke off talks on a new collective bargaining agreement in Toronto.
The Stars already have missed six regular-season games due to the NHL lockout. The Stars now lose four more games scheduled between October 25 and November 1. That includes home games against Vancouver and St. Louis and a pair of road games against Philadelphia and the New York Rangers.
The two rounds of cancelations account for about 11 percent of the league schedule. Both the NHL and the NHL Players Association traded proposals earlier this week, but they didn’t reach a breakthrough on the major sticking point of the negotiations, which is the split of hockey-related revenue for player salaries and benefits.
The NHL is proposing a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue between the league and the players for the life of the contract. Because players currently receive 57 percent of revenue, this would mean an immediate salary rollback.
The NHLPA offered three different proposals that called for a 50-50 split but brought player salaries down gradually over the life of the deal instead of all at once.
The NHL said last week that it would like to have a complete 82-game schedule this season. For that to happen, the season would have to start by November 2, according to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
