Holiday often calls for travel, and travel often means layovers. A new report says that travelers coming through Dallas Love Field Airport have it pretty good.

A study by travel experts Upgraded Points ranked DAL among the best airports in the U.S. for layovers, putting it at No. 13 out of a total 50 of the busiest airports in the U.S.

Factors that went into Love Field's status as good for layovers included:

  • how often departures were on time: 69 percent
  • how often planes arrived on time: 76 percent
  • average arrival delays: 56 minutes
  • percentage of canceled flights: 4.07 percent

Significantly, the study found that DAL has second-shortest departure wait times out of all 50 airports, at 49.9 minutes; Oakland International Airport came in at No. 1.

"Many Americans may experience planned or unplanned layovers during their travels," the report said. "However, these layovers don’t have to be a source of misery. Depending on the airport you find yourself in, you can actually make the most of your time there."

The city with the best layover in Texas was Austin, whose Austin-Bergstrom International Airport came in at No. 4 on the list. DAL fared better than the much larger Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, which had the longest wait times out of all 50 airports, at 91.4 minutes.

The top 10 U.S. airports for layovers are:

  • No. 1 – San Diego International Airport
  • No. 2 – Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport
  • No. 3 – Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport
  • No. 4 – Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
  • No. 5 – John Wayne Airport
  • No. 6 – Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
  • No. 7 – Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport
  • No. 8 – Nashville International Airport
  • No. 9 – Pittsburgh International Airport
  • No. 10 – Chicago Midway International Airport
The study analyzed the 50 busiest U.S. airports using data from each airport's website and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics to determine the rankings. Other factors included in the study included the number of restaurants per mile, on-site hotels, the percentage of on-time arrivals and departures, the average delay times, TSA wait times, and more.
