    Weekend Event Planner

Dallas Comic Con Fan Days and Rick Springfield top best weekend events

    Alex Bentley
    Feb 5, 2015 | 12:00 am

The first full weekend in February is a relatively low-key one, with only a couple of major events around town. But that just gives you more time to check out some great local fare, like a few art films, an anniversary performance by a renowned local chorus and a new addition to the Elevator Project.

Below are the best options for your precious free time Thursday through Sunday. Don't like what you see? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.

    Thursday, February 5

    Rick Springfield in concert
It hasn't exactly been difficult to see Rick Springfield live and in person around Dallas recently; this concert marks his third appearance in the past 17 months. But this one at the Majestic Theatre still offers something a little different, as the singer known for songs like "Jessie's Girl" and "Affair of the Heart" adds in storytelling and a special audience Q&A.

    LuminArte Gallery’s A.D.D. Film Night
Usually leaving in the middle of the movie is considered rude to the people who made it, but LuminArte Gallery is actively encouraging it with their A.D.D. Film Night. They present two art films – Cutie and the Boxer and Amateur — in separate galleries so that guests can go back and forth as many times as their hearts desire.

    Friday, February 6

Dallas Actor's Lab presents Uncle Vanya
After an auspicious start in 2012 and 2013, Dallas Actor's Lab was absent from the local theater scene for all of 2014. But they're making a noteworthy return with Uncle Vanya at the Wyly Theatre as part of AT&T Performing Arts Center's Elevator Project. The updated version of Chekhov's classic runs through February 22.

Records Collecting Dust film screening with the Black Dotz
Vinyl lovers will be in heaven at this screening of Records Collecting Dust, a documentary about music and the records that changed the lives of a variety of punk music icons. Following the screening, which takes place at The Kessler, post-punk Dallas group The Black Dotz takes the stage to give a current take on music.

    Saturday, February 7

    Dallas Comic Con Fan Days
Not to be confused with the regular Dallas Comic Con, a three-day extravaganza taking place in May, Fan Days is still another way for fans to get up close and personal with some of their favorite TV and movie stars. Among the celebrities expected at Irving Convention Center are Stephen Amell and John Barrowman from Arrow, Alex Kingston from Doctor Who, and more.

Turtle Creek Chorale presents 35th Anniversary Concert
Believe it or not, the gay men's chorus Turtle Creek Chorale has been around for 35 years now. Their longetivity and breadth of their performances has led to their becoming one of the most acclaimed male choruses in the country. They revisit their history and maybe look ahead to the future with this concert at Dallas City Performance Hall.

    Sunday, February 8

    Film Day at the Modern
The Oscars is the theme of the day at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth on Sunday, when visitors get several opportunities to see the 2015 Oscar-nominated short films, both live action and animated. The day ends with a free screening of the Oscar-winning movie Once, complete with a pre-screening performance by Telegraph Canyon's Chris Johnson.

Texas Ballet Theater presents The Merry Widow
You get two prominent arts groups for the price of one when you go see Texas Ballet Theater's The Merry Widow, as TBT is teaming up with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra for the second time this season. Adapted from the operetta of the same name, the ballet is about a widow who gets caught up in a whirlwind of romantic confusion. It plays at Bass Performance Hall Friday through Sunday.

Dallas Actor's Lab presents Uncle Vanya at Wyly Theatre through February 22.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and Foreigner double up on '26 tour with stop in Dallas

Foreigner will co-headline a tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd that will stop at Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas on August 28, 2026.

Classic rock bands Lynyrd Skynyrd and Foreigner will join forces for the 2026 co-headlining Double Trouble Double Vision Tour, which will include a stop at Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas on Friday, August 28.

The 19-city tour will take place over the course of just over a month in July and August, starting in Atlanta, Georgia on July 23 and ending in Rogers, Arkansas on August 29.

In addition to Dallas, the two bands will also play in Houston suburb The Woodlands on August 27. Six Gun Sally will serve as the opening act on all dates.

Lynyrd Skynyrd has as checkered a history as any American band, releasing five albums in five years in the 1970s before lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and others were killed in a 1977 plane crash.

The band reformed in 1987 with Van Zant's brother Johnny taking over as lead singer. They went on release nine more albums, with their most recent release being Last of a Dyin' Breed in 2012.

Foreigner was one of the more popular rock bands in the late 1970s and early 1980s, releasing five top 5 albums in a row on the strength of hit songs like "Feels Like the First Time," "Cold as Ice," and "Double Vision."

That last song appears to have inspired the tour title, as it's been mashed up with Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1976 song "Double Trouble."

The artist pre-sale for the tour begins on Tuesday, November 18 at 12 pm. The general on-sale goes live on Friday, November 21 at 10 am at both foreigneronline.com/tour or lynyrdskynyrd.com.
