Spring's Must-Attend Events

The 9 spring charitable events in every Dallas social butterfly's datebook

Diana Oates
Feb 20, 2015 | 12:15 pm

Spring in Dallas means patio brunching, leisurely walks at White Rock Lake, and maybe even a tropical trip or two. It is also a time for the Dallas social set to shed their fur coats and come out of hiding for a lively and lengthy season of fun and fundraising.

That said, every Dallasite is wired differently. Some prefer daytime activities (like the beloved Saint Valentine's Day Luncheon and Fashion Show); others opt for concert galas as big as Texas (think United Way's Unite Forever Gala at AT&T Stadium). And you know we love them all.

I've rounded up the best spring charitable events in Dallas. And depending on how you define philanthropic fun, we expect to see you at one or two of them.

For the Fashionista: House of DIFFA, March 7
DIFFA Dallas completes its fundraising season with a black-tie gala unlike another other, when more than 2,000 patrons show up in their most avant garde apparel to partake in people-watching and a spectacular fashion presentation. This event showcases a curated selection of one-of-a-kind jackets created by local and internally renowned designers, and all proceeds help fund HIV/AIDS service organizations in North Texas. Individual tickets start at $375.

For the Lady Who Lunches: Mad Hatter's Tea, April 9
The Women's Council of the Dallas Arboretum has made this annual luncheon quite the local tradition. Celebrating 27 years with an "April in Paris" theme, this luncheon brings out the competitive spirit in the creative women (and a few daring men) who wear wild, whimsical and wonderful hats. Women sip champagne on the beautiful arboretum grounds before taking in some amazing fashion and delicious food. What's not to love? Individual tickets start at $200.

For the Museum Patron: Art Ball 50, April 11
If you believe in the mission of the Dallas Museum of Art, then you have to attend this grand gala. In just the last 15 years, Art Ball has raised more than $22 million to support the museum's commitment to engaging and educating the community. Art Ball 50 celebrates, you guessed it, the 50th anniversary of this annual event, and we are anxiously awaiting chair Nancy Carlson's entertainment announcement. It may be hard to top John Legend, who serenaded last year's crowd. There are several underwriting opportunities available.

For the Modern Art Addict: MTV RE:DEFINE, April 10
This unique exhibition and auction held at the Goss-Michael Foundation brings together iconic and specially commissioned artworks by established and emerging talent. Nothing is off-limits at this artful affair, and that includes the fantastic fashions worn by attendees. All proceeds from sales benefit the MTV Staying Alive Foundation — to date, the event has raised nearly $4 million for AIDS research — and the Dallas Contemporary. Individual ticket prices start at $1,000.

For the Country Music Mega Fan: Academy of Country Music's Lifting Lives Gala, April 17
In honor of the Academy of Country Music Awards happening at AT&T Stadium, the academy's philanthropic arm is throwing its first fundraising gala. Themed "One Night, Two Cities, All Music," this star-studded gala, hosted by Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, consists of two shows taking place simultaneously at the Omni Dallas hotel and the Fort Worth Zoo. The Omni gala features headliner and ACM Awards nominee Lady Antebellum, with a special performance by fellow nominee Hunter Hayes. At the Fort Worth Zoo, ACM Awards nominees Keith Urban and Little Big Town perform. For more information on the gala, including ticket inquiries and sponsorship opportunities, contact ACM Lifting Lives at gala@acmcountry.com

For the Family Man or Woman: The Great Create, April 26
This is one party in Dallas where you should bring your kids. Join more than 500 patrons of the Nasher Sculpture Center for family-focused fundraising that engages your artistic side with hands-on activities and workshops led by local and national artists. Raising money for the Nasher's educational initiatives, this third annual celebration of youth art education also features great live entertainment and kid-friendly food. Ticket packages start at $500.
For the Speaker Seeker: Genesis Women's Shelter & Support Annual Luncheon, May 5
This is the event for those who like to leave a luncheon feeling inspired by a speaker. The Genesis crew, known for bringing in someone remarkable, welcomes Maria Shriver as the keynote speaker for 2015. Shriver is a Peabody- and Emmy-winning journalist and producer, a six-time New York Times best-selling author, a former first lady of California, a current NBC News special anchor and a mother of four. Needless to say, she has a lot of stories to tell and a lot of advice to give. Underwriting opportunities start at $2,500.
For the Foodie: TACA Lexus Party on the Green, May 8
A culinary tradition at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, this outdoor bash showcases the culinary talents of chefs from Dallas and around the world. There is so much good food — and wine — that you almost can't get to it all. Almost. Those who like to go home with a little something can check out the stacked silent auction and wine cork pull. And there is always live music that inspires attendees to get on their feet. For more information, contact TACA at 214-520-3930.
For the Trailblazer: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man/Woman of the Year, May 30
This is the first year LLS is hosting this event in North Texas, so trailblazing movers and shakers should get on board. The Man and Woman of the Year campaign is a 10-week fundraising blitz that pits top Dallas-Fort Worth business and community leaders against each other. This year's list of candidates includes Imran Sheikh, Keith Pearson, Stuart Boslow, Larry Anderson, Erin Ragsdale, Gina Cook, Kim Carter, Kristy Wassenaar, Mai Caldwell, Saadie Sheikh and Adine Zornow; they compete in honor of children who are cancer survivors, the Boy and Girl of the Year. The campaign kicks off March 26, with a celebration at the Renaissance Hotel, and the Grand Finale Gala takes place at the Westin Galleria on May 30.

Taylor Sheridan is a 2027 recipient of the History-Making Texan Award.

Trailblazing North Texas producer, director, and screenwriter Taylor Sheridan will add a new award to his shelf in 2027. Sheridan has been named one of two recipients of the History-Making Texan Award, which the Texas State History Museum Foundation (TSHMF) will present in Austin in spring 2027.

Since 2005, the organization has honored "living Texas legends whose contributions to the state and the nation have been truly historic and exceptional in scope and nature." Past galas have recognized prominent Texas figures such as former presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush and former first ladies Barbara and Laura Bush, as well as H-E-B chairman Charles Butt, singer-songwriter and accordionist Leonardo “Flaco” Jimenéz, among others.

Joining Sheridan as the other 2027 honoree is Texas Historical Commission chairman, businessman, and philanthropist John L. Nau, III. The 2027 gala will be held at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin on March 2, Texas Independence Day.

"Our honorees are national leaders whose accomplishments have elevated Texas’ distinctive place on the national and international stage," said Debbie Raynor, Dinner Chair and TSHMF Trustee, in a relase. "John L. Nau, III and Taylor Sheridan have each, in very different ways, helped tell the Texas story — one through the preservation of our history and treasured places, the other through the power of storytelling that has brought Texas and the American West to audiences around the world."

Quadruple-threat filmmaker Sheridan is most widely recognized for his award-winning neo-Western TV series Yellowstone and its associated spin-offs 1883, 1923, Marshals, and Dutton Ranch. Raynor hailed Sheridan for his success in bringing a "remarkable new dimension to the way the world sees Texas and the American West."

"As a creator, writer, director, and executive producer of some of television’s most successful series, he has captured the imagination of audiences across the globe while bringing the people, landscapes, traditions and enduring spirit of the West into millions of homes," she said. "And he does more than tell the Texas story — he lives it, as a native Texan, accomplished horseman and steward of two legendary Texas ranches."

Nau is the former chairman and CEO of Silver Eagle Beverages, one of the largest Anheuser-Busch distributors in the U.S. Raynor said Nau's "commitment to preservation" extends further than his protection of Texas historic sites "to the stewardship and conservation of the land itself, including his bay area lodge in south Texas and his ranch in west Texas."

"[Nau's] leadership and lifelong dedication to history have earned him national recognition, but perhaps his greatest legacy is his determination to ensure that the stories and places that shaped Texas endure for generations to come," Raynor said.

A release estimates about 450 "business, political, and community leaders" attend the Texas Independence Day Dinner each year, and proceeds will benefit the Bullock Museum's educational programs and special projects.

The 2027 Texas Independence Day Dinner will take place March 2, 2027, at the Bullock Museum in Austin. A VIP reception will start at 6:30 pm, followed by a 7 pm reception, and 7:30 dinner and program.
