Bringing Broadway to Dallas
The next Broadway Series season for AT&T Performing Arts Center has been announced, and many of the titles might sound familiar to regular Dallas-Fort Worth theatergoers. That's because three of the eight shows have had recent professional productions in the area, and a fourth is returning for what's sure to be another sold-out run.
Original cast member Anthony Rapp, recently in Dallas for the tour of If/Then, will lead the 20th anniversary tour of Jonathan Larson's groundbreaking musical Rent (though he won't still be with the show when it gets to Dallas). Fiasco Theater's stripped-down version of Into the Woods reimagines the fractured fairy tale without the ornate sets and costumes usually associated with the show. Hedwig and the Angry Inch, one of the two add-on shows, was delicately danced around for its adult subject matter.
And because if it ain't broke, don't fix it, The Book of Mormon is coming back for the third time in as many years.
These shows will be joined by a two musicals and one play that are currently running on Broadway: Finding Neverland, Something Rotten!, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Plays have proven difficult to stage on the Winspear's gargantuan platform, but Curious Incident relies heavily on technical wizardry, so it should be a good fit.
Finding Neverland is based on the Johnny Depp film of the same name, and Something Rotten! is a mash-up send-up of Broadway musicals that's takes place during Shakespeare's time.
A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder, which closed on Broadway in early 2016, rounds out the roster.
There are, however, two noticeable omissions in the lineup: Fun Home and Hamilton. Fun Home has announced its tour dates in other cities, but its in-the-round staging would prove difficult for the Winspear. And unlike Houston, who's getting the runaway hit Hamilton in 2017-18, we're still waiting to hear if A. Ham and A. Burr will be rapping their way to Dallas anytime soon.
