Adventures in Time

Sky-high hats captivate crowd at 25th annual Mad Hatter's Tea

Rachael Abrams
Apr 26, 2013 | 1:49 pm

Attendees pulled out all the stops — or, shall we say, tops — for the 25th annual Mad Hatter’s Tea, themed “Adventures in Time,” at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Chic chapeaus of all shapes, sizes and themes never fail to dazzle at this boisterous benefit, which helps the arboretum’s Women’s Council fund the Woman’s Garden.

As we stepped into Ginsburg Plaza, we thought we had slipped into some kind of Alice and Wonderland dream. Tiered hats with all kinds of trinkets, toys, feathers and jewels nearly made us dizzy.

Each enormous head topper — it’s almost a misnomer to call it a “hat” — told a story, including Joani White’s award winner with miniature Titanic, hope diamond necklace and small Louis Vuitton trunk, which she carried in hand. D’Andra Simmons’ best in show boasted a mini Taj Mahal, elephants and bright orange flowers resting on a purple turban.

Steve Kemble’s giant three-tiered cake; Teffy Jacobs’ vibrant petal and arrow hat; and Faye Briggs’ cowboy hat, adorned with a Barbie and pink silk fabric, were also a trip.

We didn’t envy judges Lawrence Bock, Connie Dufner, Holly Forsythe, Julian Leaver, Daniel Winson Lewis, Paula Caldwell St-Onge, Amy Vanderoef and Anthony Wilkinson, who had their work cut out for them. Once the judges got a good look at the competitors, guests gathered in Rosine Hall for a fashion show produced by Jan Strimple, live auction, and award ceremony.

Emcee Ron Corning introduced Women’s Council president and “force of nature” Sue Ringle, who reminded devotees that the organization was on the verge of setting a record for net proceeds before encouraging them to bid in the auction. She also thanked co-chairs Maggie Kipp and Shay Geyer, who wore anniversary-themed hats: Kipp wore the No. 2, while Geyer sported No. 5.

When Corning returned to the microphone, he noticed Ringle has left her iPhone on the podium. “She has a passcode. That definitely means she’s been sexting,” he said. The crowd, already loose from the bubbly, burst out laughing. Even Ringle and honorary chair Patty Dedman Nail couldn’t help but giggle.

Corning bestowed a special gift unto last year’s co-chair, Carmaleta Whiteley, whom Kipp and Geyer call “fairy godmother.”

“Lord knows you have a lot of fairies in your life, and now you have a wand to go along with them,” Corning said. Whiteley waved her blinged-out wand at the crowd before the fashion show began.

After eyeing bright spring looks from Cavalli and Oscar de la Renta, ladies bid on live auction items, including a party in the Woman’s Garden and a necklace by Shona Gilbert. Then the moment they had all been waiting for arrived, when the judges announced the winners:

  • Gents Top Hats: Timeless, Billy Fulmer
  • Most True to Theme: Back to the Future, Joani White
  • Botanical: Adam and Eve, Terry Irby
  • Most Whimsical: Roaring Twenties, Yvonne Crum
  • Most Elegant: Court of Versailles, Elizabeth Mendez
  • Best of Show: 25th Anniversary, D’Andra Simmons
  • Most Outlandish: Wild, Wild West, Nancy Brite Smith
  • Group (for the first time ever, a tie): Hollywood Glamour and Record in Time

The award winners flocked to the stage to show off their over-the-top designs. Then, finally, an elegant lunch followed in the outdoor plaza — which served primarily to soak up all the champagne that had been flowing freely.

Award-winning Dallas vegan chef opens TLC 'tastes like chicken' cafe

TLC Vegan Cafe

If it's chicken-fried, it has to be good.

A new vegan cafe has debuted in Richardson from an award-winning chef. Called TLC Vegan Cafe, it's from vegan chef Troy Gardner, and it opened at 1930 N. Coit Rd. #140 on November 11.

It's in the space previously occupied by Reverie Bakeshop, the vegan and gluten-free bakery, which relocated to 980 Coit Rd. in June. With seating for about 30, TLC will have dine-in service plus a market for sandwiches and other grab-and-go items.

The Cafe is an evolution from TLC Vegan Kitchen, the ghost kitchen concept Gardner founded during the pandemic at Revolving Kitchen in Garland.

TLC Vegan Kitchen was voted D Magazine’s Best Vegan restaurant and won CultureMap's Tastemaker Award in 2021 for Best Ghost Kitchen.

The menu includes Gardner's signature oyster mushrooms, said to taste like chicken, the inspiration for the name TLC, which stands for "Tastes like Chicken."

Other items include:

  • chicken fried steak
  • lasagna with house-made ricotta, mozzarella, & parmesan
  • chocolate lava cake
  • banana foster pudding

Gardner is partnered with Sherry Copeland, owner of Jai Meals, a food service located at the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano serving vegan meals from different chefs for pick-up or home delivery. Copeland wanted a storefront outside of the mall and leased the Richardson spot.

TLC Vegan Café will be among the first locations in the country to offer Better Balance, a new plant-based food brand currently available in Europe and Mexico that launched in the U.S. in 2022 and is headquartered in Dallas.

Gardner was previously co-owner and chef at V-Eats in Trinity Groves, as well as owner and chef at Samson’s Gourmet Hot Dogs from 2013 to 2016, where half of the menu was vegan - catching the eye of celebrities like Erykah Badu and Andre 3000 of Outkast. He also had a successful catering business called Mobile Gourmet that he started in 1997, where he first started serving and adding vegan dishes.

In late 2018, he was featured on the Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games, Season 20, episode 1 of the “Clash of the Vegetarians." In 2022, he published his first cookbook of plant-based recipes called Easy Southern Vegan Cookbook and also launched a line of spice mixes called Veganize IT!

Sprinkles' pizzeria spinoff debuts in Dallas, first outside California

Pizzana

Get ready for some celebrated pizza.

Pizza is on with the imminent arrival of Pizzana, the restaurant from the founders of Sprinkles Cupcakes, opening at 3219 Knox St. on November 15.

Pizzana debuted in Los Angeles in 2017, and as a release notes, this is the first location outside California. It stars pizzaiolo Daniele Uditi, who has appeared on Hulu's "Best in Dough" pizza competition series.

They ferment their dough for 48 hours. Toppings blend traditional with Pizzana originals such as Uditi's signature cacio e pepe pizza, which a release claims has been copied by pizza places far and wide. Not in Dallas though! Buck up.

The menu includes pizzas, antipasti, salads, desserts, and vegan options. They're also doing a gluten-free crust.

Much like Shake Shack, they're doing a collaboration with a local: a pizza with ingredients from BBQ restaurant Pecan Lodge featuring brisket, smoked fior di latte, jalapeño, pickled red onion, fontina crema, cilantro, and San Marzano barbecue sauce.

There's also a Dallas-only dessert, an apple crisp featuring Texas-based whiskey brand Herman Marshall is topped with vanilla ice cream, which the release calls creamy. Creamy is definitely preferable in a vanilla ice cream to icy, grainy, or hard.

"Dallas is a very special city and has always been so welcoming to Sprinkles Cupcakes," Candace Nelson says in a statement. "Daniele, Charles, and I are so looking forward to sharing Pizzana with the Dallas community. "Pizzana’s menu will satisfy any carb carving and everything on the menu is worth the indulgence.”

The restaurant seats 45, with banquettes and signature Mediterranean blue colors. Each table features Pizzana's first-of-its-kind pizza towers, custom-crafted for hot pies to be presented and stacked above the surface of the table.

They'll be open lunch and dinner daily, until 10 pm Sunday-Thursday and 11 pm Friday and Saturday.

Asian Mint

Learn to make a few new dishes with the chef at Asian Mint.

Holiday parties are popping up early, with one local brewery hosting one of the first Christmas-themed soirees of the season. There are also wine dinners aplenty, including one that comes with five glorious courses of truffle-infused dishes. Also on the list: an Asian cooking class, a famous cookbook author chat, and an anniversary party where everyone is encouraged to wear white.

Monday, November 14

Staglin Wine Dinner at Gemma
The modern American bistro on Henderson Avenue invites wine lovers for a five-course dinner paired with California’s Staglin wines. Two Chardonnays and two Cabernet Sauvignons will be paired with jumbo lump crab salad, fall squash risotto, chicken porchetta, Wagyu beef cheeks, and almond cake with cardamon, orange blossom, and pistachio. The dinner is $250 plus tax and gratuity, and begins at 6 pm with cocktails and appetizers.

Wednesday, November 16

Be Our Guest Chef Series at The French Room
The French Room will open its doors for limited dinner service to welcome guest chef Tom Cunanan, a James Beard Award recipient who hails from the Philippines and who’s worked in renowned kitchens across Washington D.C. Cunanan’s five-course tasting menu will include exotic flavors with ingredients like squid, prawns, clams, and soft-shell crab. The tasting menu is $150 plus tax and gratuity, and will be offered through Saturday. Wine pairings or a mix of wine and cocktail pairings may be added for $68. Reservations are limited.

Hall Wines Dinner Series at Ellie’s
The Napa-inspired restaurant at the Hall Arts Hotel will feature the popular Hall, Walt, and Baca wines during this four-course pairing dinner from executive chef Anthony Hsia. Dinner is $125 plus tax and begins at 6:30 pm.

J. Lohr Wine Dinner at Hotel Vin
Cynthia Lohr, co-owner of California’s J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, will visit the Grapevine hotel for a four-course wine-pairing dinner in the Bordeaux Ballroom. Chardonnay, two Cabernets, and a Petite Syrah will be paired with a seafood starter, lemon, basil, and fontina tortellini, Wagyu prime rib, and red velvet cake with cheesecake mousse and chocolate glaze. Dinner is $200 plus service charge and tax, and begins with a reception at 6 pm. Also note that Hotel Vin’s Winter Wonderland pop-up begins Friday for the holiday season, featuring the hotel’s popular igloo bubbles available for happy hour or dinner reservations. (This year they’re decked out with après ski lodge décor.) Reservations start at $150, plus tax and gratuity, for a bottle of wine and fondue to share during happy hour.

Thursday, November 17

Asian Cooking Class at Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden
Spend your lunch hour (or two) learning how to create flavorful Asian dishes from chef Nikky Phinyawatana of the Bangkok-inspired restaurant group Asian Mint. The hands-on class will feature crispy egg rolls with sweet-and-sour sauce and Thanksgiving Thai Fried Rice. The class is $89 ($79 for Arboretum members) and will run from 11 am-1:30 pm.

An Evening with Nigella Lawson
Food writer, author, and TV cook Nigella Lawson will sit and share in tasty conversation with Good Morning Texas host Jane McGarry during an evening at the Eisemann Center, Hill Performance Hall. Lawson will talk about her latest book, Cook, Eat, Repeat, which compiles a combination of recipes and narrative essays. She’s written 12 books total that have sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. Seats range from $35 to $60, and the event begins at 7:30 pm.

Friday, November 18

First Anniversary of Villa Azur
The South-of-France-inspired eatery and entertainment destination, which originated in Miami Beach, will mark its first anniversary in Dallas with a theme party. Guests are invited to light up the night and wear all white for dinner and a show. Entertainment will include live music, dancers, and DJ tunes from 6:30 pm-2:30 am. Mediterranean dishes for the evening will feature truffle burrata and the Instagram-worthy pates a la meule – pasta prepared tableside in a wheel of parmesan cheese flambeed in cognac. Dinner is a la carte.

Saturday, November 19

Holiday Party Kick-off at Pegasus City Brewery
Christmas has arrived early at this downtown Dallas brewery, which is now serving wine and cider alongside its lineup of 18 craft beers on tap.
