Texas' first ski-lift bike park takes mountain bike adventures to new heights in the Hill Country

Celestina Blok
Apr 27, 2022 | 10:19 am

At Spider Mountain Bike Park in Burnet, what goes up must come down.

Located on Lake Buchanan about an hour northwest of Austin in the Hill Country, the attraction is the only year-round ski-lift bike park in the U.S. (In fact, it’s the only place in Texas with a ski-lift, period.) Opened just before the pandemic, in 2019, the park draws mountain bikers from across the country for its year-round access to downhill, gravity-fueled biking terrain.

Here bikers (and their bikes) ride a chairlift called the Texas Eagle up 350 feet to the mountain’s peak, where they can choose from one of 10 different bike trails — from beginner to expert — to cruise back down.

“To have a chairlift in the middle of the Hill Country is really exciting whether you’re a mountain biker or not,” says Suzy Bauer, Spider Mountain Bike Park general manager. “Because you can enjoy a 360-degree view across the Hill Country and Lake Buchanan.”

Trails average about a mile or two in length and are categorized just like ski slopes, with green for beginners, blue for intermediate, and black for experts. The trails also have fun (and slightly frightening) spider-themed names, like “Itsy Bitsy,” “Venom,” and “Viper’s Den.” All trails are hand-carved or machine-cut, and some contain man-made features like colorful ramps. Some bikers can descent trails as fast as three minutes, while others may take as long as 15 minutes or so.

“In June you might be able to ride a bike park in Crested Butte, Colorado or in Angel Fire, New Mexico, but they close for ski season. We don’t,” says Bauer. “You can hone your skills in a downhill environment, which is pretty different than riding cross-country trails. You’re getting that elevation game and the technicality of a true downhill mountain bike park.”

Bauer says while there’s definitely opportunity for adrenaline junkies to showcase their jumps, speed, and switchback skills on the mountain, the park is also very popular for novice bikers and families. Many guests simply wish to ride the chairlift and walk back down, and there’s a dedicated hiking trail for doing just that. Some even opt to ride the Texas Eagle back down for the most leisurely of Spider Mountain experiences.

There’s also a practice trail on flat ground at the bottom of the mountain. Called “Creepy Crawly,” it’s where mountain biking newbies and even kids can gain confidence in biking on dirt. No lift ticket required.

Hidden from major thoroughfares and busy highways, Spider Mountain Bike Park is a destination for those in the know — and word is spreading. The park has plans to add more trails in the coming months, including a new black trail to keep pushing the envelope.

The park is also affiliated with nearby Thunderbird Lodge, which offers 23 lodging options as well as pontoon boats, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming. Bauer says several rooms will undergo renovations in the coming weeks to accommodate a growing clientele.

Spider Mountain Bike Park is open Friday through Sunday year-round, with extended hours during busier weeks. Lift tickets are $59 for adults for all-day access to the Texas Eagle chairlift. Tickets for young adults age 11-18 and seniors 60-plus are $55, and kids 10 and under may ride free.

No mountain bike? No problem. Spider Mountain offers bike rentals, too. Folks who wish to stay on foot and hike back down can pay $10 for all-day access to the chairlift.

Other spots to visit while in Burnet County

Where to stay:

Container City
Home to six cabins constructed from the trendy shipping container, Container City opened in November 2019 and sits at the southern foot of Spider Mountain. Each ultra-modern, custom-built cabin is equipped with a full kitchen, comfy beds, shower, TV, internet access, front patio, picnic area, and a dazzling rooftop patio for catching a Hill County sunset with a glass of wine. The property also has RV slips along with an on-site full-service bar, stage for weekend live music, and outdoor pizza kitchen. Rates start at $200 per night for weekend stays ($50 off for a weeknight), and $50 per night for RV slips.

Canyon of the Eagles
This nature-based overnight destination sits on 940 acres on Lake Buchanan in Burnet County and offers 61 rooms with sprawling views of Lake Buchanan’s northern bank. Don’t look for a TV or great internet access here — the resort’s intent for guests is to let go of technology and fast-paced living. Named for the American Bald Eagle who nest here annually, the resort offers many excursions including guided walks, boat cruises, and an amazing observatory staffed by a qualified astronomer who leads evening programs amid abundantly starry skies. Dine at the chef-driven Overlook Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and catch live music with a cocktail on Saturday nights at the Eagles Nest Lounge. Rates start at $169 per night and vary by season and holidays.

Nature-seekers should keep in mind that Burnet is known as the "Bluebonnet Capital of Texas" and the surrounding areas come alive with color each spring.

Where to eat & drink:

Templeton’s Tavern
Located at Container City, this entirely outdoor venue serves local beer and spirits from, fittingly, a shipping container-made bar. There are picnic tables and lots open spaces for seating, along with a small stage for weekend live music and a trailer that serves pizzas made to order from a wood-fired oven. Open Thursday-Sunday.

Blue Bonnet Café
An iconic Marble Falls pit stop since 1929, this classic roadside diner is known statewide (and beyond) for its comfort food favorites, all-day breakfast served, and mile-high pies. Speaking of those pies — which include classics like coconut cream, chocolate cream, and lemon meringue — they’re on “pie happy hour” Monday-Friday from 3-5 pm. Or have a slice for breakfast, as an appetizer, or simply for dessert.

Save the World Brewing Co.
Physicians-turned-beer brewers Dave and Quynh Rathkamp operate this inspiring Marble Falls brewery and taproom, touted as America’s first 100 percent philanthropic production craft brewery. Not only are the mostly Belgian-style brews (it’s what Quynh prefers) delightful on the palate, sales from every pour or bottle purchased go to area charities. Dave had been an avid home brewer and retired from his practice 2012 to “save the world” one beer at a time. A few organizations the couple love include Food for the Hungry, Meals on Wheels, Feed My Starving Children, and Habitat for Humanity. The tap room is open Monday-Saturday, and there’s a kid-friendly lawn with yard games that is popular for families on the weekend.

'Yellowstone' stars premiere season 5 in Fort Worth ahead of filming in North Texas

Taylor Sheridan and Nicole Sheridan at the Yellowstone season 5 premiere in Fort Worth.

On a chilly fall Sunday evening, the cast and crew of Yellowstone descended on Fort Worth for the hit Paramount TV show's long-awaited season 5 premiere.

Stars and supporters of both Yellowstone and its Fort Worth-shot prequel 1883 - including creator Taylor Sheridan and his wife, Nicole - hit the red carpet (okay, technically it was black) at the Fort Worth Stockyards' Hotel Drover before sitting down to a screening at the Downtown Cowtown at the Isis theater on Sunday, November 13.

The premiere-event was a homecoming for Sheridan, an honorary Fort Worthian who attended Pascal High School and lives on a ranch in Weatherford. It also preceded a day of shooting in the small North Texas town of Venus on Tuesday, November 15, WFAA reported.

Sheridan's Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family of Montana, led by John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the U.S. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds and hard-earned respect, the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders: an expanding town, an Indian reservation and America’s first national park.

Although Yellowstone's biggest star, Costner, was not in Fort Worth for the premiere, other "Duttons" in attendance included Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton), Kelsey Asbille (Monica Dutton), Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton), and Kylie Rogers (young Beth Dutton).

After the screening, guests attended a reception at the Barn at the Hotel Drover, where they were met by a Texas Longhorn and three Drovers from the Fort Worth herd. The reception featured Yellowstone-themed “Blue Montana” and “Dutton Ranch” beverages as signature cocktails.

Country singer Hayes Carll entertained, and a unique “Shop the Scenes” experience allowed attendees to simulate living on the Yellowstone ranch.

Guests were able to wander virtual sets and shop authentic products from the shows. Other fun activities included a custom Wrangler Denim Jacket Station, custom luggage tags with “Yellowstone” signature “Y” branding, a 3D photo booth, a boot shiner and “Yellowstone 1883” Reserve wine tasting.

VIP attendees included cast and crew Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, Wendy Moniz, Jefferson White, Ian Bohen, Denim Richards, Jen Landon, Piper Perabo, Hassie Harrison, John Emmet Tracy, Ethan Lee, Dawn Olivieri, Kai Caster, Kathryn Kelly, Kyle Silverstein, Eric and Sainty Nelson, Dave Annable, Jake Ream, Buck Taylor, Christian Wassana, and directors Stephen Kay and Christina Voros. Additional notable guests included Craig Cavileer, managing Partner of Stockyards Heritage Development Co. and Hotel Drover; Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks; David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios; and Jenny Wood, president of Bosque Ranch.

The event was presented at the conclusion of the 16th annual Lone Star Film Festival, which screened a variety of narrative feature films, documentaries and short films at various destinations in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Two days earlier at the LSFF Gala, Sheridan had received the 2022 Larry McMurtry Award, the festival's highest honor.

The award, presented by the Lone Star Film Festival and the Fort Worth Film Commission, honors native Texans who have made great contributions to the film, television, and creative industries.

In 2023, Sheridan will receive the state's highest honor for achievement in the arts, a Texas Medal of Arts Award.

Award-winning Dallas vegan chef opens TLC 'tastes like chicken' cafe

TLC cafe
TLC Vegan Cafe

If it's chicken-fried, it has to be good.

A new vegan cafe has debuted in Richardson from an award-winning chef. Called TLC Vegan Cafe, it's from vegan chef Troy Gardner, and it opened at 1930 N. Coit Rd. #140 on November 11.

It's in the space previously occupied by Reverie Bakeshop, the vegan and gluten-free bakery, which relocated to 980 Coit Rd. in June. With seating for about 30, TLC will have dine-in service plus a market for sandwiches and other grab-and-go items.

The Cafe is an evolution from TLC Vegan Kitchen, the ghost kitchen concept Gardner founded during the pandemic at Revolving Kitchen in Garland.

TLC Vegan Kitchen was voted D Magazine’s Best Vegan restaurant and won CultureMap's Tastemaker Award in 2021 for Best Ghost Kitchen.

The menu includes Gardner's signature oyster mushrooms, said to taste like chicken, the inspiration for the name TLC, which stands for "Tastes like Chicken."

Other items include:

  • chicken fried steak
  • lasagna with house-made ricotta, mozzarella, & parmesan
  • chocolate lava cake
  • banana foster pudding

Gardner is partnered with Sherry Copeland, owner of Jai Meals, a food service located at the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano serving vegan meals from different chefs for pick-up or home delivery. Copeland wanted a storefront outside of the mall and leased the Richardson spot.

TLC Vegan Café will be among the first locations in the country to offer Better Balance, a new plant-based food brand currently available in Europe and Mexico that launched in the U.S. in 2022 and is headquartered in Dallas.

Gardner was previously co-owner and chef at V-Eats in Trinity Groves, as well as owner and chef at Samson’s Gourmet Hot Dogs from 2013 to 2016, where half of the menu was vegan - catching the eye of celebrities like Erykah Badu and Andre 3000 of Outkast. He also had a successful catering business called Mobile Gourmet that he started in 1997, where he first started serving and adding vegan dishes.

In late 2018, he was featured on the Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games, Season 20, episode 1 of the “Clash of the Vegetarians." In 2022, he published his first cookbook of plant-based recipes called Easy Southern Vegan Cookbook and also launched a line of spice mixes called Veganize IT!

Sprinkles' pizzeria spinoff debuts in Dallas, first outside California

Pizzana

Get ready for some celebrated pizza.

Pizza is on with the imminent arrival of Pizzana, the restaurant from the founders of Sprinkles Cupcakes, opening at 3219 Knox St. on November 15.

Pizzana debuted in Los Angeles in 2017, and as a release notes, this is the first location outside California. It stars pizzaiolo Daniele Uditi, who has appeared on Hulu's "Best in Dough" pizza competition series.

They ferment their dough for 48 hours. Toppings blend traditional with Pizzana originals such as Uditi's signature cacio e pepe pizza, which a release claims has been copied by pizza places far and wide. Not in Dallas though! Buck up.

The menu includes pizzas, antipasti, salads, desserts, and vegan options. They're also doing a gluten-free crust.

Much like Shake Shack, they're doing a collaboration with a local: a pizza with ingredients from BBQ restaurant Pecan Lodge featuring brisket, smoked fior di latte, jalapeño, pickled red onion, fontina crema, cilantro, and San Marzano barbecue sauce.

There's also a Dallas-only dessert, an apple crisp featuring Texas-based whiskey brand Herman Marshall is topped with vanilla ice cream, which the release calls creamy. Creamy is definitely preferable in a vanilla ice cream to icy, grainy, or hard.

"Dallas is a very special city and has always been so welcoming to Sprinkles Cupcakes," Candace Nelson says in a statement. "Daniele, Charles, and I are so looking forward to sharing Pizzana with the Dallas community. "Pizzana’s menu will satisfy any carb carving and everything on the menu is worth the indulgence.”

The restaurant seats 45, with banquettes and signature Mediterranean blue colors. Each table features Pizzana's first-of-its-kind pizza towers, custom-crafted for hot pies to be presented and stacked above the surface of the table.

They'll be open lunch and dinner daily, until 10 pm Sunday-Thursday and 11 pm Friday and Saturday.
