    House For Sale

Tom Landry home for sale near Dallas' Preston Hollow is an oasis of nature

    Teresa Gubbins
    Jun 14, 2021 | 5:40 pm

A former home of legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry and his wife Alicia, located near the moneyed intersection of Bluffview and Preston Hollow, is on the market.

The house was built in 1952 and is at the end of a small, heavily wooded, secluded cul de sac off Inwood Road. It has 5,408 square feet, and is one-and-a-half stories, with a lower level that looks out over an intensely verdant backdrop that features a creek with a footbridge, wildlife, and loads of privacy.

Located at 5336 Rock Cliff Place, the home has 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and a swanky pool, and sits on 1.72 acres. The asking price is $2,999,000.

First posted by People Newspapers, the listing is by Allie Beth Allman, which describes the property as "Land / Lots for Sale." Meaning, they assume buyers want it for the land, not the house.

The agency hosted an open house on June 13, so we went in hopes of spotting a pink-tiled bathroom or two, but little '50s kitsch could be found.

Instead it has a kind of understated modesty for which Landry was known, including a utilitarian kitchen, "normal" size bathrooms, and cozy bedrooms — the elegance of non-excess.

That might actually make a stronger case for renovating the house, which overlooks the Straight Branch creek, an extension of Bachman Lake. The entire back of the house consists of floor-to-ceiling glass, placing the focus on the pastoral setting.

The property is dense with mature trees, some ringed with climbing vines for a kind of woodland fairy tale vibe, with a pair of treehouses and a footbridge that crosses over the creek. Some of that can be seen in this video.

During our visit, we saw an adorable four-legged critter — a baby hog, maybe? — scuttle into the brush. The space was otherwise so quiet, the ultimate luxury.

Inside, the house had an extended ranch-style layout, with a hallway across the middle, with expansive spaces for the dining room and family room to the left, and bedrooms clustered to the right.

The lower level consisted of a large bedroom and en suite bathroom with its own separate entrance, but it could also be reached via a secret stairway of sorts, accessible through a closet in one of the bedrooms.

When the Landrys bought the land, they bought three parcels, both to guarantee privacy and to ensure that the space would remain green. Tom Landry died in 2000, and Alicia Landry died in January 2021.

It's near-impossible to find an undeveloped oasis of nature, left to its own device, like this in the middle of North Dallas. But how many masters of the universe who can afford such a property have the self-control to leave the space alone?

There've been no shortage of Landry homes that have been sold in recent years, including his original ranch-style home at 4510 Hallmark in Dallas in 2015 (and then again in 2017), lakefront property in Spicewood in 2016, his golf-course getaway in The Hills in 2019, and his Hill Country hideaway in Austin in 2019.

Most of the personal effects are gone from the home but there was still a portrait of Tom Landry that hadn't yet been removed.

Blooming Dallas suburb ranks as America's 7th most livable small city

    Amber Heckler

    Flower Mound, Texas
    flowermound.gov/
Flower Mound has skyrocketed into the top 10 most livable small cities in 2025.

One Dallas-area city continues to attract the national spotlight: namely Flower Mound, whose latest accolade comes from SmartAsset, the financial technology company, which ranks it as the No. 7 most livable small city in the U.S. for 2025.

This ranking represents a big jump for this family-focused suburb less than 30 miles from Dallas, which skyrocketed into the top 10 after coming in at No. 29 on the same list last year.

SmartAsset's annual study compared 279 U.S. cities with populations between 65,000 and 100,000 residents across seven metrics, including a resident's housing costs as a percentage of household income; average commute times; the percentage of residents living below the poverty line; and the proportions of entertainment, food service, and healthcare establishments.

Flower Mound boasts a population of more than 79,000 residents who earn a median $147,490 in yearly household income, the report found. These residents spend just under 20 percent of their income on their housing costs, which add up to a median $2,454 per month.

The city is sprawling with employment opportunities on both local and corporate levels, comprising more than 20,000 businesses, and nearly 97 percent of Flower Mound residents have health insurance. Residents spend about 25 minutes on average commuting to their jobs.

Flower Mound has the second-lowest unemployment rate out of all 20 Texas cities in the report, at just 1.95 percent. The report also added that only 3.3 percent of the city's population is living below the poverty line.

Earlier this year, Flower Mound's appealing size and relative affordability landed the No. 1 slot on Livability.com's list of best places to live in the U.S. in 2025.

According to the city's website, Flower Mound prides itself on being a tight-knit, family-oriented community that embraces its small-town feel while still encouraging "a dynamic economic development environment."

Flower Mound came in as the highest Dallas-Fort Worth city to earn a spot in the top 50, but three other cities also made the list including North Richland Hills, which took a major leap from its 2024 ranking at No. 139 and is now the 48th most livable small city nationwide.

The two other Dallas-Fort Worth cities that earned spots among the 279 most livable small cities in the nation: Mansfield (No. 138) and Rowlett (No. 181).

Reducing household expenses or escaping from noise pollution are just a few of the many reasons Americans may choose to move to a smaller city. But the report says not all families are willing to trade a lower cost of living for the convenience of living in a major urban epicenter.

"Ultimately, a local economy where infrastructure, business, financial prosperity and convenience all intersect may offer the best of all worlds for everyone in the household," the report's author wrote.

The top 10 most livable small U.S. cities in 2025 are:

    • No. 1 – Plymouth, Minnesota
    • No. 2 – Bloomington, Illinois
    • No. 3 – Livonia, Michigan
    • No. 4 – O'Fallon, Missouri
    • No. 5 – Ankeny, Iowa
    • No. 6 – Lakeville, Minnesota
    • No. 7 – Flower Mound, Texas
    • No. 8 – Eu Claire, Wisconsin
    • No. 9 – Appleton, Wisconsin
    • No. 10 – St. Charles, Missouri
