    This Week in Gluttony

Fancy guest chefs descend on Dallas for this week's best food events

    Diana Oates
    Jul 14, 2015 | 6:00 am

It’s a pretty big week in food events around Dallas, as chefs are flying in from San Francisco and Paris to cook for us. Plus Lake Highlands’ first brewery is celebrating its grand opening, and Texas Barbecue Week continues.

    Tuesday, July 14

    Texas Barbecue Week
Sponsored by TMBBQ and Shiner Beers, this week-long event kicked off Sunday, July 12, and runs through Saturday, July 18. Lone Star barbecue joints deemed the best in the state by Texas Monthly are offering a unique plate at a fixed price; a portion of proceeds benefits Foodways Texas, a nonprofit aimed at supporting the food culture throughout the state. Participating Dallas-Fort Worth restaurants include Pecan Lodge, Cousin’s, Hutchins, Lockhart Smokehouse, Longoria’s, Peggy Sue and Smoke. Check out the dishes on the TMBBQ website.

    Thursday, July 16

Birds & Brews at Trinity River Audubon
Guests can explore trails with a sunset backdrop and then enjoy the air-conditioned exhibits in the center after-hours while sampling brews from three local breweries and bites from food trucks. There is also an opportunity to see live birds of prey from Window to the Wild and view architectural art by Tauma Wiggins. Admission is $6; the fun starts at 6 pm. You must be 21 years old to attend.

    The Botanist Dinner at Bolsa
Executive chef Joel Harrington and mixologist Kyle Hilla create a special four-course dinner and cocktail pairing centered around Bruichladdich Distillery’s artisanal Botanist Islay Dry Gin. Both the cocktails and food courses feature ingredients from Oak Cliff’s Mulcahy Farms. The cost for dinner plus pairings is $65, and it starts at 6 pm. Make reservations by calling 214-367-9367 or emailing contact@bolsadallas.com.

    Friday, July 17

A Taste of Paris at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek
Chef Bruno Davaillon welcomes executive chef Chistopher Hache and pastry chef Jérôme Chaucesse from fellow Rosewood property Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. Highlights from the six-course tasting menu include lobster with pickled peach, black garlic and brown butter, and black bass with chanterelle, Australian truffle and chive blossom. Cost is $115 per person; call 214-559-2100 for reservations. Dinner starts at 6 pm, and the event takes place daily through Friday, July 24.

    Third Friday at Omni Dallas
Enjoy a fun evening at the Omni featuring 44 Farms of Cameron, Texas. Dishes include chipotle oxtail steamed bun, beef tataki and watermelon salad, 44 Farms beef duet, and Texas peaches. The reception starts at 6:30 pm; dinner follows at 7. Price is $55 per person. Call 214-979-4529 for reservations.

    Saturday, July 18

    Oak Highlands Brewery Grand Opening
Oak Highlands is the first production brewery in the Lake Highlands area. Tickets to the grand opening event include an OHB pint glass, koozie and tokens to try three of the five beers from the starting lineup. Visitors can check out the brewery space (including the air-conditioned tap room); nosh on fare from OinknMoo BBQ and Easy Slider food trucks; and listen to live music from Charley Crockett, Ole G and Shotgun Friday. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Farm-inspired Collaborative Wine Dinner at Second Floor
Join chefs Scott Gottlich and Todd Ginsberg for this dinner with wine pairings from Cakebread Cellars (with the exception of the final course, which is paired with Michele Chiarlo). The five-course meal includes produce, dairy and more that has been sourced from local purveyors, including Vital Farms, Lemley’s Farms, Fretwell Farms, Side Peas Farm, Phennel Farm and On Pure Ground Dairy. Dinner costs $75 per person, plus $75 for optional wine pairings. Cocktails and bites starts at 7 pm; dinner begins at 7:30. Call 972-450-2978 for reservations.

    Monday, July 20

Guest Chef Dinner Series at FT33
FT33’s guest chef dinner series continues when SPQR’s team come to town from San Francisco for a night dedicated to innovation and collaboration. The eight-course dinner costs $105 per person, plus $55 for optional wine pairings. The dinner starts at 7 pm; call 214-741-2629 for reservations.

A Japanese-inspired restaurant that brings you sushi on a conveyor belt is now open in McKinney: Called Kura Revolving Sushi, it’s located at 8585 W. University Dr. #150 in the West Grove mixed-use development, where it debuts on April 25, with an opening party taking place all weekend from April 25-27.

"We are thrilled to open our sixth DFW location in McKinney, which is one of the fastest growing cities in the country with a population that's increasingly diverse and open to new culinary experiences," says Chief Development Officer Robert Kluger in a statement. "We believe the West Grove shopping center is the perfect place to share our authentic Japanese dining experience with this growing community."

Kura Sushi USA was established in 2008 and has grown to be the largest revolving sushi chain: Small plates of sushi and sides are placed on a conveyor belt that snakes around the restaurant, allowing customers to grab items as they pass by.

They have more than 100 menu items, including sushi, ramen, and popular Asian starters like edamame and wontons. Each item is charged separately starting at $3.45 a plate.

There are two conveyors as follows:

    • Revolving Sushi Bar. The primary belt that snakes through the dining area, with plates of sushi that are protected by the chain's Mr. Fresh ventilated sushi lid. They say it limits airborne exposure and has plate-tracking technology that monitors how long the item has been circulating, ensuring food remains fresh.
    • Express Belt. Referred to as the "sushi highway," the express belt is positioned above the primary belt and is used to deliver special orders.

    Bikkura Pon Prizes
An integral part of Kura Sushi USA’s tech interactive dining experience, Bikkura Pon is a machine that dispenses prizes after customers dispose of their plates properly. A touch panel registers the number of sushi plates dispensed into the plate disposal slot. After five plates, a short animation plays; after every fifteen plates, a prize such as a keychain or phone mount pops out.

Kura has more than 550 locations in Japan, U.S., and Taiwan. There are 70 locations in 20 states and Washington D.C. McKinney is the sixth location to open in DFW; other locations include Carrollton, Euless, Plano, Frisco, and Fort Worth.
