    Summer In The City

Gourmet grocery, indie flicks and New York pizza descend on Dallas this week

    Teresa Gubbins
    Aug 5, 2013 | 5:00 pm

While July in Dallas was all about the mid-summer doldrums, August promises to be crazy, with a string of meteoric openings happening this week.

There's a gourmet grocery, a movie theater and a pizzeria. If you've somehow missed the hubbub surrounding these high-profile coming-soons, then we're turning up the incubator so you can watch them hatch:

    1. Trader Joe's Dallas. Opening at 2001 Greenville Ave. on August 9. This is the third Trader Joe's to open locally, following the Fort Worth trailblazer in June 2012, and the Plano TJ's which opened in September '12. But this is Dallas proper. Provincial they may be, but some Dallasites would never drive to Plano or Fort Worth. This store is also a big deal because it's on Greenville Avenue, now in the midst of a gentrification.

The parking lot is swept, the shelves are being stocked; it's only a matter of hours before some cookie-butter-craving ding-dong starts camping outside the door.

    2. Alamo Drafthouse Richardson. Opening at Richardson Heights on August 9. For movie fans with personality, the Alamo is the pinnacle. It has Austin roots, great food, retrospective screenings, fun contests, a sense of community, craft beer and does not allow cell phone use during screenings.

No question, cell phones are annoying; but what's just as cool about that policy is the take-no-prisoners no-BS attitude that such a ban implies. That Alamo chose Richardson, whose community-oriented citizens have their own Austin-esque mien, is just gravy on the potatoes.

    3. Zoli's NY Pizza Tavern. Opening in Oak Cliff on August 6. Part of the excitement surrounding this modest pizzeria in Oak Cliff is timing. (It's defnitely not the ranch.) There's just not much competition in the way of new places (other than the intriguing Bread Zeppelin).

There's also the fact that owner Jay Jerrier has proven with Cane Rosso and Cane Rosso White Rock that he 1. knows how to put out a quality product and 2. can maintain consistency. But the final impetus is the cavalcade of photographs – puffy pizza crusts, crimson marinara sauce, breaded zucchini sticks fried golden brown – that have been crossing Zoli's Facebook page for the past two months. Uncle!

The first Alamo Drafthouse in the Dallas area opens August 9.

    Fire Chief News

Veteran firefighter Justin Ball promoted to Dallas Fire-Rescue chief

The city of Dallas has a new fire chief: Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert has appointed Interim Chief Justin Ball to serve as the next Chief of Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR), effective April 23.

According to a release, 32 candidates applied for the position. The list was narrowed down to four semifinalists, including current and former fire chiefs and executives, all of whom participated in a series of meet and greets and feedback panels.

"Chief Ball has a demonstrated track record of strong leadership," Tolbert said in a statement. "He has brought fresh ideas to solve problems and seized on innovative opportunities to take this internationally recognized department to the next level."

Ball will serve as Dallas' 18th Fire Chief, overseeing a $430 million budget and leading roughly 2200 men and women who work in the department responding to fire and emergency medical services.

Ball joined DFR in 1997 and has advanced through every rank—from firefighter paramedic to Field Deputy Chief, Executive Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, and ultimately Executive Assistant Chief of Operations. (You know all of these positions if you've ever watched Chicago Fire, the mesmerizing TV series, which BTW was created by two graduates of Baylor University in Waco.)

Chief Ball has a bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration from Texas A&M and maintains certifications as a Master Firefighter, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor II, Incident Commander, and Incident Safety Officer.
Originally from northeast England, he has called the Dallas area home for more than 30 years and considers DFR his extended family.

In June, he assumed the role of Interim Fire Chief after Chief Dominique Artis was named the City’s first Chief of Public Safety.

“It’s an incredible honor to have been selected as the permanent Chief to lead the brave men and women with whom I have the pleasure of working with each day,” Ball said in a statement. “I look forward to building on our positive momentum, focusing on the safety and wellness of our members, and continuing to deliver the best service to this community.”
