Allen's Watters Creek ushers in holiday season with music and merriment

CultureMap Create
Nov 30, 2021 | 11:40 am

It's beginning to look — and sound — a lot like the holidays at Watters Creek at Montgomery Farm in Allen.

The open-air shopping and dining destination is getting all decked out for the season, with everything from Santa visits to holiday craft projects to a menorah lighting ceremony.

Santa Claus is coming to town
Visit Santa daily in his magical Bavarian Village at 959 Garden Park Dr. for photos and wishes through December 24. Precautionary measures have been made to enhance the safety of your Santa experience. Reservations are recommended, though walk-in visits are offered as space allows.

Before your annual visit with Santa, enjoy sweet treats (while supplies last), a balloon elf, a free goodie bag, and more at the PJ Party, December 8 from 6-8 pm. Parents are invited to bring children to this free event in their favorite pajamas.

Four-legged friends will have their own special time for photos with Santa Paws, December 6 and 13 from 4 pm-close. Five dollars from the sale of each photo package will be donated to Animal Rescue Crusaders of Texas (ARC).

Santa knows that some children need extra patience and quiet time when visiting, so Santa's sensory-friendly morning on December 5 from 9-11 am is exclusively for families with special needs children and their siblings.

Merry music
As you're browsing for everyone on your list, enjoy Sounds of the Season from local schools, churches, and professional musicians through December 21.

Likewise, Eddie Crocetti Jazz performs jazzy holiday favorites on Fridays and Saturdays through December 19 on the plaza outside Frogg Coffee Bar & Creperie.

Watch an assortment of tuba players when they congregate on The Green for Merry Tuba Christmas, playing Christmas carols and other crowd favorites on December 11 at 2:30 pm. If you play tuba or euphonium, head to 968 Village Green Dr. at noon for registration and the 1 pm rehearsal, then join in on this joyful celebration. Visit www.allenphilharmonic.org for more details.

Santa's little helpers
On Thursdays and Fridays, December 2-17 from 11 am-7 pm, kids can create their very own unique holiday craft project at home and receive a special treat. Elves, Inc. To-Go offers fun, free, holiday craft projects for pick-up, with projects geared toward children from pre-school through elementary, while supplies last. Pick up at the Concierge+ Lounge on Garden Park Drive.

To make the holidays memorable for the men and women serving America, Watters Creek donates Christmas trees to the Trees for Troops program on behalf of the Allen Community. Help share the spirit by stopping by the Trees for Troops tent on December 3 from 2-5 pm, at the plaza in front of Frogg Coffee Bar, to write a note of appreciation attached to a Christmas tree and received by a service member or family.

Cheerful celebrations
Gather on The Green at Watters Creek for the Grand Menorah Lighting on December 2, beginning at 4:30 pm. To-go Chanukah bags for everyone include dreidels, donuts, chocolate coins, arts and crafts, and more.

Each year on December 24, Tangible Grace Fellowship Church brings Christmas Eve on The Green to Watters Creek, and everyone is invited. The music starts at 5:30 pm and is over at about 6:15 pm. Enjoy a joyful family experience singing Christmas carols by candlelight.

Gifts for you
Visit during Festive Fridays, December 3-24 from 2-8 pm, and receive a complimentary glass of wine (21-and-up only) at the Concierge+ lounge. Present $75 in same-day Watters Creek receipts (exclusive of groceries and gift cards) at the Concierge+ lounge and receive a four-piece holiday gift box of Godiva chocolates.

From December 1-24, purchase three or more Watters Creek gift cards and receive an extra $10 gift card for yourself. Gift cards are available at the Watters Creek Concierge+ Guest Center, located at 909 Garden Park Dr. between J. Jill and Anthropologie. One per person, per day, while supplies last.

Watters Creek offers free valet to all customers Friday and Saturday from 5-11 pm throughout the year. Valet is located on Village Green Drive in front of Menchie's Frozen Yogurt and on Garden Park Drive across from The Blue Fish.

Shop the finest in food, fashion, and more with safe, convenient, and contact-free pick-up:

  1. Place your orders with your favorite shops and restaurants.
  2. Park in a designated pick-up spot and let them know you've arrived.
  3. Click here to view a printable map that highlights each pick-up area.

Parking spaces are branded with signage, and each sign is numbered to identify the location. Don't hesitate to get in touch with each store or restaurant directly for more information.

Write an encouraging note on the Trees for Troops.

Texas museum displays Broadway's 'Wicked' best costumes in new exhibition

Susan Hilferty's designs are on display at the McNay Art Museum until March 23, 2023.

As Glinda the Good Witch says in the iconic Wicked opening, let us "rejoiceify" with a San Antonio museum's newest exhibit — Something Wicked/Susan Hilferty Costumes.

Hilferty is the costume design mastermind behind the Tony Award-winning costumes in the hit Broadway musical, from Glinda's resplendent blue ballgown to Elphaba's magical finale dress. They're just two of the incredible array of Hilferty costumes currently on display at the McNay Art Museum. Other costumes spotted were vibrant Ozian outfits, Glinda's pink 'Popular' dress, the Wizard's green suit, and more.

McNay guests can also immerse themselves in the worlds of other musicals Hilferty has designed costumes for, including Annie, Wonderland, and Lestat. There are thirty of Hilferty's brilliant costumes to view in total.

Hilferty has also been confirmed as a guest at the McNay Art Museum's annual Tobin Distinguished Lecture, which will take place on Thursday, March 23, 2023. (Guests can purchase tickets for the lecture on the McNay website closer to the event date).

The Tony Award-winning costume and set designer collaborated with R. Scott Blackshire, Ph.D., curator of the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts to create a truly enchanting experience that will officially be housed at the McNay until Sunday, March 26th, 2023.

Dr. Blackshire had nothing but praise for the exciting collaboration, noting in an official statement that, "Helping [Hilferty] honor the makers, artisans, knitters, fabric painters, and others who bring her designs to the stage was a privilege. Susan relies on creative collaboration for every production she designs."

The importance of the exhibition for San Antonio's prosperous theater community was not lost on Dr. Blackshire, who also stated, "The community of San Antonio theater makers who visit the exhibition will find many of their art forms represented and reflected in the costumes."

Something Wicked/Susan Hilferty Costumes is now open to the public in the Tobin Theatre Arts and Brown Galleries at the McNay Art Museum until March 23, 2023.

Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks join forces for iconic concert at AT&T Stadium

Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks join forces for iconic concert at AT&T Stadium
Billy Joel Facebook

Billy Joel comes to Arlington for the first time since 2019.

Music legends Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks will co-headline a special concert at AT&T Stadium on April 8, 2023, the first time the two have ever performed on the same stage in Texas.

Two of the most loved and universally respected entertainers of all time, Joel and Nicks are responsible for some of the most iconic music of the 20th century.

Joel had a run from the late '70s to the early '90s that is rivaled by few, with all eight of his albums during that time going multi-platinum. Songs like "Piano Man," "Just the Way You Are," "My Life," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," and "We Didn't Start the Fire" remain a big part of the American music lexicon.

Nicks accomplished something even more difficult, becoming a legend both as part of band and a solo singer. Her time with Fleetwood Mac yielded one of the best-selling albums of all time, Rumours, and classic songs like "Go Your Own Way," "Landslide," and more. She is the first woman to have been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Joel last played in Dallas-Fort Worth in 2019, while this Nicks' first appearance in the area since 2016.

AT&T Stadium is on a roll with the big concerts, as it was just announced that Taylor Swift will play back-to-back concerts there a week prior to this concert. Additionally, they have big shows from Luke Combs and Ed Sheeran on their schedule in the coming months.

Tickets for the concert, announced November 2, will go on sale to the general public beginning on Friday, November 11, at 10 am at LiveNation.com or SeatGeek.com.

STK Steakhouse imports pricey steaks and party vibe to Uptown Dallas

Teresa Gubbins

STK steakhouse
STK Facebook

The steak has arrived.

More steak has arrived in Uptown via STK Steakhouse, from One Group Hospitality, Inc., which has opened at 2000 McKinney Ave., in the former Perry's Steakhouse, which relocated to 2100 Olive St. in 2020.

According to a release, it's a company-owned location and their second restaurant opening of the year.

They promise "Vibe Dining" at its finest, with premium dry-aged steak, world-famous cocktails, and music from renowned DJs.

How about a Texas cliche, via a quote from One Group president-CEO Emanuel “Manny” Hilario:

“They say everything is bigger in Texas, and we cannot wait to make STK’s signature Vibe Dining experience larger than life for residents and visitors alike in Dallas,” Hilario says. "STK offers our guests the ultimate dining experience, making every occasion celebrated in our restaurants a memorable one. We know STK will be a great addition to Dallas’ already bustling restaurant scene and are proud to open our doors to share our unmatched culinary offerings with The Lone Star State.”

Open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, it's pricey, with steaks beginning at $55 for a 6-ounce filet and topping out at $157 for a 34-ounce tomahawk. That doesn't count toppings, which are separate: $5 for a peppercorn crust, $6 for a "zingy rub," $39 for a lobster tail, and $42 for crab Oscar.

Appetizers start at $22 for an iceberg wedge salad up to $37 for a crabcake. Entrees start at $47 for chicken with peas & beans to $73 for lamb with carrots & kale.

This puts it in the same price range as Nusr-Et, the also-very-pricey steakhouse a few blocks away from Nusret Gökçe, AKA Salt Bae.

For high-end steak aficionados, STK has three Japanese Wagyu options: A5 strip for $35 per ounce, A5 filet for $44 per ounce, and A5 spinalis which you can get in a 6-ounce version for $99.

Other menu items include:

  • oysters on the shell, a dozen for $54
  • jalapeño shrimp cocktail, $31
  • mushroom & truffle tagliatelle with shaved black truffle, $52

Sides are an amusingly steep $18 and include Yukon gold mashed potatoes, tater tots, Parmesan truffle fries, corn pudding, creamed spinach, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and mushrooms with bacon & cheese. Waiter, I'll have an order of the $18 tater tots, please.

Mac & cheese comes in three versions: plain, with bacon for $21, or with lobster for $31.

Cocktails include the Not Your Daddy’s Old Fashioned, Cucumber Stiletto, and Spiced Watermelon, as well as an award-winning wine list featuring varietals from around the world.

Other STK locations are in Atlanta, Bellevue, Chicago, Denver, Doha, Dubai, Ibiza, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Los Cabos, Miami, Milan, Nashville, New York City, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco, San Juan, Scottsdale, and Toronto.

One Group Hospitality also owns Kona Grill, which has a location in Dallas at NorthPark Center. ONE Group also manages and operates restaurants and food & beverage services within high-end hotels and casinos currently operating 13 venues in the U.S.
