    Chanel Metiers d'Art: Inside Karl Lagerfeld's celebrity-filled Texas fashion spectacle

    If you didn’t know that Chanel’s Métiers d’Art was taking place at Fair Park last night, then you must live under a rather unfashionable rock. Dallas has been anxiously awaiting Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion extravaganza for months since he declared his love for Texas to Women’s Wear Daily back in January.

     

    Nearly 1,000 fortuitous people received the most coveted ticket in town for the once-a-year runway show that pays homage to its artisans. Since 2002, it has taken place in select cities such as London, Tokyo and Shanghai.

     

    The Paris-Dallas themed evening played out in three parts, beginning with a drive-in style premiere — popcorn, corn dogs and candy included — of Lagerfeld’s latest short film, The Return that reflects on Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s turbulent comeback in the ’50s. The late Stanley Marcus was one of the first to recognize her return by granting Madame Chanel with the Neiman Marcus award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Fashion 56 years ago. On December 11, Anna Wintour presents Lagerfeld with the same award at the flagship Neiman Marcus downtown.

     

    VIP’s — including Kristen Stewart (the new face of Chanel), Dakota Fanning, Lauren Hutton (also spotted at CBD Provisions at The Joule Monday night), Alexa Chung, Lily Collins, Georgina Chaplin, Hamish Bowles, Nina Garcia and Stefano Tonchi — sat in vintage cars to watch the flick. Wintour, Andre Leon Talley and Lagerfeld snuggled up in a 1940s Caddy convertible.

     

    Following the film, guests shuffled through the cold to Centennial Hall, which was transformed into a barn, where giant chandeliers fashioned of Texas and French flags hung over the hay-slung runway. Internationally recognized models, including Dallas’ own Erin Wasson, marched out decked in denim, gold-starred, fringed, leathered and feathered looks that were said to be inspired by Houston socialite Lynn Wyatt — who was in attendance along with many other Texans, including Ken Downing, Gene Jones, Cindy and Howard Rachofsky, James Cope, Nancy Rogers, Jackie Bolin, Brian Bolke, Capera Ryan, Ceron, Todd Fiscus, and Becca Cason Thrash.

     

    Chanel pulled out all the stops to turn the adjoining space into a Billy Bob’s-esque saloon complete with mechanical bull, gambling, pool tables — and Lone Star, of course. As attendees took in the action, chef Tim Love and team doled out tacos, tamales, Frito pie in a bag, mixed meats, charred Brussels sprouts, corn on the cob and venison jerky. Iconic Texas tunes, played by local DJ Horseshoes & Hand Grenades along with Dolly Python’s Gretchen Bell, had models and company line dancing before the big act, British band Hot Chip, mixed it up for the crowd.

     

    Lagerfeld watched on from a cowhide-covered perch near the stage, getting up to capture a few snaps of those taking a turn on the bull. Stewart was so supremely herself, playing pool in a corner, no trace of a smile on her face.

     

    It was an international affair to remember. Merci beaucoup to Chanel for choosing our fine city to host this remarkable event.

    Summer can often be sleepy when it comes to new store openings, but summer 2025 is not taking a break. This edition of Where to Shop, CultureMap's monthly column of shops and sales, has six new finds, dominated by home decor stores, but also new clothing brands and collections.

    Here's where to shop in Dallas in July 2025:

    Aroma 360
    Home and office fragrance store at Galleria Dallas carries automatic diffusers, reed diffusers, car scents, candles, and sprays. They have a brand new Miami collection, featuring notes like bergamot, pineapple, driftwood, and grapefruit. One signature item is the Mini Pro Scent Diffuser, a $300 automatic diffuser that uses waterless and heatless technology to scent up to 600 square feet.

    Barbie's House
    Barbie Clariday originally founded a home furnishings store in 1999 to serve Houston clients. Now 25 years later, her daughter Jennifer Brown has opened a spinoff in Prosper, offering the same mix of fine furniture, home accessories, gifts, and design services where they'll help find the perfect decorative item or furnish an entire home. They sell bed comforter sets, pillows, chairs, and gifts from brands like Oh My Mahjong and B's Knees candles.

    Conrad Shades
    Luxury window shades brand is now available exclusively inside the Holly Hunt showroom in the Design District. Holly Hunt carries the full catalogue of 150 woven designs, including the recently launched Japanese-inspired Shibui Collection. Highlights include the Indigo and Sakuru shades, crafted from recycled denim fibers, and the Kata shade, which evokes the dying and weaving traditions of Japan.

    OmniThreads 
    Dallas-based clothing brand inspired by spirituality, Greek mythology, and the zodiac is online only, where it sells T-shirts, hoodies, dad hats, and kids shirts. Here's where to get T-shirts for every sign of the Zodiac, from Aries to Pisces, rendered in vivid, graffiti-esque designs and colors. They have an eco-friendly mission, using biodegradable packaging and paperless receipts.

    Sephora
    Beauty chain has opened a location in Allen at the Allen Premium Outlets, next to the Kate Spade store. It's a regular Sephora store, not an outlet, which stocks the usual assortment of cosmetics, skincare, fragrance, and makeup from Glossier, Makeup by Mario, and Summer Fridays. There is no shortage of Sephora locations with 30 in the DFW area including Galleria Dallas, Preston Royal, and Willow Bend in Plano.

    Weekend Academy
    Walmart’s newest private fashion brand fills a space in the fashion market for Gen Alpha, ages 7-14. The tween-specific clothing brand features 65 clothing items for girls and boys including denim, graphic tees, fleece, skirts and dresses, footwear, and accessories, with a majority of items available under $15 and many under $10. Weekend Academy joins Walmart's two other clothing brands for younger shoppers: Wonder Nation brand for kids and No Boundaries brand for Gen Z teens and young adults.
