Real Weddings

Nothing cookie-cutter about this clever couple’s modern Dallas wedding

Julia Bunch
Dec 23, 2016 | 1:32 pm

Diana Lopez and Jared Morris first met as college freshmen, though they went to schools nearly seven hours apart. Diana attended the University of Texas at Arlington; Jared attended Eastern New Mexico University. But the pair met at an annual summer internship program in Arlington.

“We would talk during the summers, then go back to our respective colleges in the fall,” Diana says. “When we graduated and were both living in Dallas, we finally started to date in a real way.”

But a job transfer for Jared landed the couple in a long distance relationship, then both living in Minneapolis, and eventually Houston (where they live now).

In August 2015, Jared planned a joint birthday celebration for himself and Diana in Dallas, where their families live. Diana (and most of the guests) didn’t know the birthday celebration was a ruse for an engagement party.

“I knew it was rare to have a lot of family in town at the same time,” Jared says. “I surprised her at Lake Ray Hubbard at a cool spot with a dock and some fountains. After we got engaged privately, we surprised many of [the party guests] with the engagement.”

Jared and Diana wed on March 26, 2016, at the Nasher Sculpture Center. Jared wanted a modern, urban wedding. Diana wanted an outdoor wedding. The Nasher accomplished both goals.

Wendy Kay at Birds of a Feather Events helped the couple bring their unique vision to life with Art Deco invitations and cakes, and an agate stone backdrop and seating chart. Diana used her gold engagement ring and the Nasher’s lush greens as color inspiration, and accented with a rich plum in the flowers. Diana mirrored the delicacy of her Anna Campbell wedding gown for the aesthetic of the wedding.

After an indoor ceremony and outdoor cocktail hour, Mr. and Mrs. Morris danced to the Bee Gees’ “More Than a Woman.” A sit-down dinner of filet mignon, sea bass, cauliflower gratin, and veggies by Wolfgang Puck Catering allowed guests to fuel up dancing.

Emerald City Band, a band the couple had seen together many times, got all 120 guests on their feet by the end of the night.

The couple tried to make their day as unique and personalized as possible. “For any wedding traditions that were cookie-cutter, we tried to go in the other direction,” Jared says.

But that didn’t keep Jared from cherishing the most classic moment from his wedding day.

“Seeing Diana all happy and smiling during our first look — I’ll remember that moment forever,” he says. “It was the private moments we shared when no one else was looking that meant the most to me.”

Fabio Luisi's new fragrance, Ogni Nota (ON).

Dallas Symphony music director Fabio Luisi has proven he's a maestro of many talents on the podium. But behind the scenes, he's got another finely tuned forte that may surprise even the most ardent of concert patrons — he's a perfumer.

Luisi has created a new, limited-edition, exclusive perfume for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, called ON (Ogni Nota), available as of November 10.

According to a release, the fragrance is now being sold in the Dallas Symphony’s store in the lobby of the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, priced at $120 for 30ml and $40 for 10ml.

A selection of Luisi's other fragrances in his FL Parfums collection are also available at the DSO store for $140 for a 20ml bottle.

“This perfume is unisex, and it is very clean with citrusy notes,” Luisi says in the release. “I wanted to evoke a feeling of joy and lightness, like a crisp, Sunday morning.”

Luisi has been creating perfumes since 2012 and has become a celebrated perfumer, lauded in such media outlets as The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and CBS Sunday Morning, DSO says. His FLPARFUMS line is sold online and at very select boutiques around the world.

The DSO fragrance, ON, started as a conversation between Luisi and Kim Noltemy, the Ross Perot President & CEO of the Dallas Symphony. According to the release, they discussed ideas for a scent profile and tested a number of combinations to come up with the perfect perfume for the DSO.

“Perfumes are a passion of Fabio’s, and we have talked about his process of creating new scents and finding new combinations for perfumes,” Noltemy says. “I’m delighted that he agreed to create something customized for us.”

Dallas founder of Chili's to open new Loop 9 BBQ restaurant in Grand Prairie

Got your sausage right here.

A Dallas famous F&B guy is opening another restaurant. Called Loop 9 BBQ, it's a new BBQ concept featuring prime brisket from Larry Lavine, the founder of Chili's, and it's opening in Grand Prairie in early 2023.

According to a release, it'll be one of the first restaurant to go into EpicCentral, the 172-acre entertainment center off Highway 161 that's home to Grand Prairie Public Safety Building, Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark, The Summit recreation center for adults ages 50+, The Epic, Playgrand Adventures, five lakes, a grand lawn, and boardwalk.

Loop 9 BBQ describes itself as a Texas barbecue restaurant serving prime brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, and Meyer’s Elgin sausage.

The signature appetizer is “Dirty” Burnt-End Queso, while a full bar will offer fresh lime margaritas, house cocktails, craft beers, and wines.

Sides will include Mexican corn, borracha beans, fried okra, cornbread, and two flavors of fries.

Desserts will be based on recipes by Lavine's wife, Ann, including Chocolate Cream Pie, Coconut Cream Pie, Key Lime Pie, and Banana Cream Pudding. The restaurant will have a separate pie shop selling whole pies to take home.

Lavine has featured her pies at previous restaurants, namely two short-lived taverns he opened 15 years ago, Red's Patio Grill in Plano and Strong's Everyday Tavern in Uptown Dallas.

Since opening is still a few months away, Loop 9 is now offering catering services as a prelude; the menu is online.

This isn't Lavine's first foray into BBQ; in 2014, he helped found Ten 50 BBQ in Richardson.

The release says the restaurant is named for a doomed Loop 9 Dallas-Fort Worth route that would have eased traffic from the future DFW airport. How Dallas, to name a restaurant for a freeway! Grand Prairie now has 161, brimming with projects that include the EpicCentral development that comprises amusement parks, hotels, conference center, and restaurants.

New self-guided walking tour showcases Fort Worth Stockyards’ many Hollywood ties

The Stockyards Hotel is on the tour.

A new self-guided tour showcasing the Fort Worth Stockyards’ many star-studded appearances in cinema throughout the years has debuted in time for the 16th annual Lone Star Film Festival, taking place November 10-12 in the Stockyards for the first time.

Called Stars of the Stockyards, the eight-stop, go-at-your-own pace walking tour guides folks to famous film sites where celebrities have stepped foot in front of Hollywood cameras. Visitors to the Stockyards can access the PDF tour map on their smart phones via QR codes (no app required) posted throughout the district, namely at hotels and tour kiosks.

"The Stockyards is a historic and celebrated destination for many reasons, but one that may be lesser known is its popularity as a filming location for some of our favorite movies and TV series," said Ethan Cartwright, VP of marketing for Stockyards Heritage Development Co.

The tour and corresponding QR codes are a permanent addition to the district, he said.

Stops on the map include the iconic White Elephant Saloon, a hotbed for Hollywood performances including several by legendary actor and martial artist Chuck Norris in the longtime TV series, Walker, Texas Ranger when the watering hole was portrayed as the fictional CD Bar. The White Elephant was also graced by country music superstar Tim McGraw and Academy Award-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton for their appearances in Paramount Plus’ hit series1883.

Also in 1883 and featured on the tour is Hookers Grill, hidden in the less flashy West side of Exchange Ave. The burger shack transformed into a gambling den in the show called The Texas House of Liquor & Sport. It’s the only building in the Stockyards that preserved the façade constructed by 1883’s production team. During operating hours, customers can order at the outdoor burger window and dine at patio tables within the two-story structure.

Cowtown Coliseum is marked on the map for its appearances in the 1983 film Tough Enough, where actor Dennis Quaid played an amateur boxer. It’s also the home of the final rodeo scene in the 1992 movie Pure Country starring country music legend George Strait.

Billy Bob’s Texas, the Stockyards Hotel, and even unassuming historic cattle pens also make the list on the tour, along with notations for the Texas Trail of Fame, which features more than 240 bronze markers honoring contributors for preserving and perpetuating the Western way of life.

Veteran actors Sam Elliot and Robert Duvall, both stars in the megahit TV series Yellowstone, are among the most recent Texas Trail of Fame inductees.
