Classical never goes out of style
Soprano star Renee Fleming and JFK Memorial Concert headline upcoming DSO season
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2013-2014 season, which kicks off September 28. It's one that promises to please both classical music lifers and neophytes.
Among the highlights is the season opening gala, with special guest soprano Renee Fleming, world-renowned for her ability to interpret a variety of musical styles. Also of note is the President John F. Kennedy Memorial Concert, a world premiere of a specially commissioned composition by Conrad Tao that will be presented on the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination.
Other well-known guests include violinist Joshua Bell, performing at the JFK Memorial Concert; baritone Matthias Goerne; and pianist Yefim Bronfman.
The majority of the season's concerts take place, as usual, at Meyerson Symphony Center, but the DSO takes its show slightly down the road to Dallas City Performance Hall for a series of chamber music concerts. For those events, appetizers and drinks are included in the price of a general-admission ticket.
The music of Beethoven is a running theme in the DSO's sixth season under conductor Jaap van Zweden. The composer's Eroica Symphony will also be played at the JFK Memorial Concert; the chamber music concerts will feature his 10 Violin Sonatas; and the season will end with a Beethoven Festival, three concerts that showcase perhaps his three most memorable works: the Fifth, Seventh and Ninth Symphonies.
Season tickets go on sale later in February, and individual tickets will be available in August.
