    Sweat It Out

How to keep doing your favorite Dallas-Fort Worth workouts at home

In the midst of COVID-19, everyone is fearful of the COVID 15 — or the extra pounds we might put on while social distancing in self-quarantine (and ordering all that take-out to help support local restaurants).

Luckily, some of our favorite Dallas and Fort Worth studios and workout gurus are going digital, offering classes via livestream and other online methods. Some require membership and others are free, but now is definitely the time to explore all the get-fit options from the comfort of your own home.

"Now, more than ever, we must tune in and listen to our bodies," says Leigha Oldham, the general manager of Super Yoga Palace. "Fear and anxiety is highly activating of our flight-or-fight response and can make us feel very out-of-body and out of control. When that feeling takes over, cortisol levels rise and all of our body's natural systems come to a screeching stop — including your immune system. One of the best things we can do to help our body's natural defenses is to move, breathe, and let it all go."

    Super Yoga Palace
All current monthly members and VIPs will receive complimentary access to SYP TV for the remainder of its temporary closure. Members should check their emails for instructions on how to log in, while non-members have several different pricing options from which to choose. The "East Dallas Palace" is also offering free Instagram Live yoga and meditation classes daily at 11 am and 6 pm.

    Meditation

    The Refuge
Check this meditation studio's Instagram Stories highlights for the schedule of free classes, which they promise will be "the same signature experience you'd get at the studio — same space, same guides, different platform."

    MindTravel SilentHike
The Klyde Warren Park hike was supposed to take place March 16, but in its absence you can now download the "musical trip into mindfulness" to enjoy on your own schedule, in your own natural setting. The 20-minute sample is free, with the option to purchase longer walks.

    Breathe
The meditation and wellness studio is hosting free livestreamed meditations and guided relaxations on its Instagram Live stories, many of which are focused on — this makes sense — breathing exercises and calming our anxieties.

    Dance

    Danielle Georgiou Dance Group
This acclaimed dance troupe will be hosting a digital company class on Saturdays from 11 am-12 pm via Instagram Live, beginning March 21. Classes will be taught by artistic director Danielle Georgiou and rehearsal director Colby Calhoun, with live musical accompaniment by DGDG producer Justin Locklear. Classes are open to anyone, of any experience level, and are donation-based with a suggestion of at least $5, with all funds supporting DGDG company members who have lost work because of COVID-19.

    Caulfield's Dance Fitness
Workouts are available on their YouTube page, with new videos being posted daily for sculpt, cardio dance, combo classes, and choreography. Current members can take classes for free, while non-members are encouraged to donate via Venmo at the account @caulfieldsdancefit.

    Avant Chamber Ballet
Join live private or group ballet and pilates classes via Zoom, Monday through Saturday. Suggested drop-in class donation is $10-$20, while private lessons are $50 an hour. See the schedule on their Instagram.

    Pilates

    Bodybar
Hop on the virtual training platform BodybarLive, which only requires internet access and a Facebook account. Members have unlimited access to livestream workouts with your favorite Bodybar instructors and training videos that you can do from the comfort and safety of your home. Class Pack holders will be able to access workouts for one class credit per week. New content will be released daily. For non-clients, it's $40 for two weeks of access and that includes access to the studio for two weeks after they fully reopen.

    D Method Fort Worth
The studio will still be offering private and semi-private lessons, as well as online classes in barre, bounce, mat pilates, and sculpt and stretch to stream from home.

    Pilates Methodology
Turn in to weekly Zoom sessions with Rachael, Jensen, and Morgan and they make it the next best thing to being in the studio. All you need is a mat, and the instructors will keep an eye out for incorrect form or alignment. You can also stay up to date through their app.

    Camp Gladiator
For the first time ever, Camp Gladiator is launching #HustleFromHome — free, live, virtual and at-home workouts. These are available to the public and CG members on Camp Gladiator's Facebook page, streaming Monday-Friday, three times a day at 5:30 am, 8 am, and 5:30 pm CT, as well as on Saturdays at 8 am. Each session is led by one of CG's certified personal trainers and requires little to no equipment (mats, dumbbells). Can't make it? The video workouts can be accessed any time of day here.

    Grit by Brit
The virtual membership includes live daily workouts on the GritFam Facebook group and on-demand access to the video library for $49 a month.

Advocates find false info being fed to Texas legislators on pet store law

A national pet store chain has been implicated in a dishonest campaign to try and influence Texas lawmakers on an upcoming bill making its way through the legislature.

The pet store chain is Petland, and they're engaged in a battle against The Ethical Pet Sale Bill (SB 1652 / HB 3458), which would encourage pet stores to stop selling at-risk animals from puppy mills and support shelters and rescue groups instead.

The Ethical Pet Sale bill has support from rescue and animal groups across Texas, who are all grappling with a glut of animals on the streets and in overcrowded shelters. That pet overpopulation problem gets even worse when pet stores import more animals from puppy mills in states like Missouri and Ohio.

If Texas passes the bill, it will join a growing number of states and cities who've already passed similar laws including Dallas, Austin, Bryan, College Station, El Paso, Euless, Fort Worth, Houston, New Braunfels, Pasadena, San Antonio, The Colony, Sherman, and Waco.

Most reputable pet store chains such as PetSmart and PetCo do not sell cats and dogs. Petland does. The company operates 84 stores in the U.S., and fights bills like this by hiring lobbyists to discourage legislators from supporting these bills.

    Phony list
In this case, a two-page summary was distributed to some Texas state senators listing reasons why they should oppose SB ("The evidence from other states, especially California, demonstrates that these types of bans do more harm than good"), plus a list of organizations that are opposed.

Most of the organizations opposed to the bill profit directly from animals, such as Petland and Puppy Dreams, a North Texas chain that also sells animals.

But the list also had surprising names including PetSmart, PetCo, and Pet Supplies Plus — the three largest pet store chains who all have a history of supporting adoption of shelter animals.

Their presence on the list caught the eye of animal advocacy groups such as Texas Humane Legislation Network and Humane World For Animals, who've worked with the big three in the past.

"We became aware of Petland Inc.’s lobbyist apparently sharing the attached document with legislators, claiming the listed pet and pet product industry leaders are opposing this legislation," said a spokesperson from Humane World of Animals (HWA). "We checked in with contacts at Petco, Petsmart, and the American Pet Products Association, and all of them deny opposing this legislation or giving Petland permission to list them on this opposition letter. It’s very possible others listed in this letter also did not give their permission to be included — we only connected with the those listed above at this stage."

CultureMap also contacted the three major pet store chains and received similar responses that they had not been consulted nor did they issue a rejection of the bill, although none wanted to be quoted.

The misrepresentation is concerning because it muddies the water with false information at a time when the bill is still under consideration:

HB 3458 — the version going through the Texas House — passed a House Committee with a 10-1 vote and has been moved up the chain towards passage.

SB 1652 — the version going through the Senate — still needs to get through the Senate Committee, Calendars, and a floor vote.

"By creating a false narrative about the position of the above industry leaders, this letter has the potential to sway lawmakers at a critical juncture in the legislation’s journey," the HWA spokesperson says.

Two Petland stores in the Dallas area — in Frisco and Tyler — have been the subject of undercover investigations. Petland Webster recently settled a lawsuit with several families that the store allegedly sold sick puppies to, and several lawsuits have been filed against Petland Woodlands in Texas, claiming the store sold sick puppies. One pet owner told the House Committee that he'd spent $20,000 on medical care of a puppy he bought at a pet store.

"Banning the retail sale of puppies and kittens is a common-sense solution to protect both animals and Texas consumers," said Dean Senator Judith Zaffirini of Laredo, who filed the bill. "My SB 1652 would help reduce pet overpopulation, promote responsible breeding practices and prevent families from unknowingly purchasing sick animals. With varying local ordinances in place and further action at the city level now restricted, it is important for the state to provide a clear and consistent approach that prioritizes both animal welfare and consumer protection."
