Halloween Costume Hijinks

Best Halloween costumes: 10 wild and crazy ideas

Elizabeth Rhodes
Oct 19, 2013 | 1:35 pm

So many Halloween fans choose to dress as something or someone relevant to popular culture, and this year is no different. If you're not sure what to wear this October 31, there are some obvious (and not-so-obvious) winners.

Two famous couples — Kate Middleton and Prince William, and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West — are very much in the zeitgeist, and both had babies this year. Dressing as the royal family would be fairly simple; opt for something light blue and conservative and have a swaddled baby doll in tow. You could even dress as baby George if you want to wear a diaper and a crown.

If you want to dress as Kim and Kanye, on the other hand, you should use a pillow to imitate a pregnant Kim and ideally wear something atrocious, perhaps using her dress from this year's Met Gala as your inspiration.

With the series finale happening less than a month ago, Breaking Bad costumes are sure to be ubiquitous this year, whether it's as Walter White or wearing a simple yellow hazmat suit. Blue rock candy is a must.

Many women opt for something sexy on Halloween, and this year there are several culturally relevant options. The film Spring Breakers debuted earlier this year, making a bikini top and short-shorts a viable costume. You could even kick it up a notch and bring your own grill-wearing, corn-rowed "Alien."

Probably the most obvious barely there costume is Miley Cyrus' flesh-colored bikini — and a giant foam finger, of course — from this year's infamous VMA performance. Transform a Beetlejuice costume into Robin Thicke's outfit and you'll be costume contest contenders.

After the racial epithet controversy from earlier this year, going as Paula Deen is a simple but poignant costume option, requiring only a gray wig, flowy blouse and Southern accent. Another simple but easily recognizable costume featuring a Southern accent would be to dress as any of the guys from Duck Dynasty.

All you need is a fake beard and some camouflage.

Even though the government shutdown has ended, the controversy is still relevant. Go as the Statue of Liberty and wear a "closed" sign, or dress as an out-of-work park ranger or astronaut.

If you're a fan of Internet memes, Grumpy Cat is definitely a great, easy-to-assemble option. Wear cat ears, some face paint and an ever-present scowl, and you've got yourself a solid costume that will be appreciated by anyone with a computer.

Kate Middleton and Prince William would make a simple, classic costume option.

Dallas animal shelter invites residents to host a pet during holiday

Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is inviting the community to help bring pets “Home for the Holidays” by adopting or fostering during one of the shelter’s busiest times of the year.

DAS has achieved strong positive outcomes this quarter, including adoptions, foster-to-adopt placements, and underage foster placements, with 1,377 in October and 1,378 in November. The department is now working toward a December goal of 1,400 positive outcomes, with 588 completed so far this month.

“We are grateful for the support our community continues to show,” said Victoria Chittam Bennett, Assistant Director. “Every adoption opens a kennel for another pet in need, and the holidays are an especially meaningful time to welcome a new companion.”

This season, adopters will also have the chance to participate in the Friends of Dallas Animal Services (FODAS) 12 Days of Holiday Giveaways, fully funded and supported through donations from generous community supporters. For more information about this initiative, visit friendsofdas.org and watch out for announcements on social media.

Holiday staycations
Residents who may not be ready to adopt can still support DAS pets by participating in Silent Night Holiday Staycations, a short-term foster opportunity that gives dogs a relaxing break from the shelter during the holiday period.

Pickup dates are scheduled for December 20-21, with drop-off options on December 27-28 or January 3-4. Participants typically spend 1-3 hours at the shelter selecting a foster match, and contact with pets outside the home should be limited. Questions may be directed to DASFtA@dallas.gov.

“Holiday Staycations allow our dogs to decompress and show their personalities in a home environment,” said Amanda Earl, Assistant Director. “The insight we receive from these foster stays is invaluable in helping pets find permanent homes.”

DAS encourages the community to adopt, foster, volunteer, or share adoptable pets to help meet December’s lifesaving goals.
“Together, we can bring home the holidays for the pets relying on us,” said Director Paul Ramon.

For more information on adoptable pets, holiday programs, or ways to get involved, visit https://bedallas90.org/ or stop by the DAS Shelter at 1818 N. Westmoreland Rd.
