Dallas animal shelter offers $50 gift card to those who adopt a pet
Dallas’ animal shelter is overflowing with dogs — so much so that they’re offering an incentive to those who will come in and adopt.
According to a release, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is well past capacity: As of February 23, the shelter has 424 dogs housed in 300 kennels. That is at 139 percent capacity.
The weekend after Valentine's Day, from February 16-18, 161 new dogs came into the shelter. That's an unusually high number of dogs, especially big breeds, and the current number of adoptions isn’t keeping up.
The shelter has a successful foster program, with more than 1,000 pets in foster homes, but they're unable to keep up with the demand.
To help encourage new adoptions, Friends of DAS, the shelter’s nonprofit support group, is offering the first 75 people who adopt a dog from the shelter Feb. 23-25 a $50 giftcard to Petco.
Another perk is that animals adopted through DAS come already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.
“We are trying every strategy we can to find positive outcomes, and we’re asking the community to come out this weekend to help us save lives,” says DAS assistant general manager Sarah Sheek in the release.
The shelter is at 1818 N. Westmoreland Rd. and the hours are as follows:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 11 am-7 pm
- Wednesday 1-7 pm
- Saturday-Sunday 11 am-6 pm
