Texas transportation agency issues warning re: solar eclipse and traffic
The Texas Department of Transportation is issuing a warning to drivers on the road on Monday April 8, the day of the total solar eclipse, which they note will be visible throughout the state from late morning to early afternoon.
The partial eclipse will begin at 12:23 pm and end at 3:02 pm. Totality will last only minutes, from about 1:40 - 1:44 pm, depending on location.
According to a release, the agency is anticipating heavier traffic than usual due to this "intergalactic experience," with out-of-state visitors and Texans traveling to get the perfect view - a scenario they predict will prompt delays and require a need for extra time to get anywhere before and after the eclipse.
They urge eclipse fans to:
- pull into a safe location to watch the eclipse
- avoid stopping on roadways or parking on shoulders
- not try to view the eclipse while driving
They'll be reiterating this advice on highway message boards, warning drivers not to stop on the road or park on the shoulder.
TxDOT has multiple safety rest areas and Travel Information Centers with safe places to park. Those locations and real-time traffic updates can be found at drivetexas.org.
Other safety tips for eclipse day include preparing your vehicle and yourself for extra time on the road. They always say you're supposed to check your tire pressure before you drive, but this is definitely the day to do it. Also bring water and snacks in case you need to sit in traffic for a while.
They recommend. you remain calm and courteous on the road, slow down, and be ready for increased traffic.
And don't litter! Throw trash in a trash can.
