Dallas-Fort Worth film critics crown Anora as best film of 2024
The Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association has voted the comedy-drama Anora as the best film of 2024, according to the results of its 31st annual critics’ poll released on Wednesday, December 18.
The top prize was one of three awards given to the film about a sex worker who has a whirlwind romance with the son of a Russian oligarch. Mikey Madison was named Best Actress for playing Anora, and Sean Baker was named as Best Director.
After Anora, the rest of the top 10 films named by the DFWFCA were, in order, The Brutalist (releasing wide in January), Conclave, Dune: Part Two, A Complete Unknown (releasing on Christmas Day), The Substance, Wicked, Nickel Boys (releasing wide in January), A Real Pain, and Sing Sing.
Acting awards were given to Ralph Fiennes as Best Actor for his role in the pope-centric Conclave; Guy Pearce as Best Supporting Actor for his role in the epic The Brutalist; and Zoe Saldaña as Best Supporting Actress for her role in the unusual musical, Emilia Pérez.
Behind-the-scenes awards included Best Screenplay to Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold for The Brutalist, Best Cinematography to Greig Fraser for Dune: Part Two, and Best Musical Score to Kris Bowers for The Wild Robot.
The Wild Robot also took home the award for Best Animated Film, while Best Foreign Language Film went to The Seed of the Sacred Fig and Best Documentary went to Sugarcane.
The Russell Smith Award, giving annually by the DFWFCA to the best low-budget or cutting-edge independent film, gave a second win to The Seed of the Sacred Fig.
