Malina Pearson peddles funky Texas-designed stuff at fourth Wigwam pop-up shop
Need a gift for that kinda funky, organic-food-eating, I-like-it-local girl on your list? Then swing by Bishop Arts District this weekend. On December 6, prop stylist and serial shopper Malina Pearson opens up the fourth Wigwam pop-up shop at the Oil and Cotton annex at 835 W. Seventh St.
“It started in 2010 as a result of the Better Block Project in Oak Cliff,” she says says. Pearson was in charge of a pop-up gift shop for the project, which transformed Oak Cliff city blocks into vibrant streets, building up the community and supporting small business.
“Everything at Wigwam is thoughtfully designed,” Pearson says. “It all has an organic feel, which is something that I'm drawn to.”
With the help of six friends, including Shannon Driscoll, owner of Oil and Cotton, Pearson created Wigwam. But after the second and third pop-up, she was not sure about opening up a fourth shop alone.
But then her friend, Ariel Saldivar, the new development director at the Goss Michael Foundation and designer of Olivia k Jewelry, approached Pearson about opening a store together. So she was swayed.
“It’s a whole different game this time, because Ariel is an amazing salesperson and brings a whole new energy to the project,” Pearson says.
Pearson says the duo will carry all sorts of eclectic “gifty” items — mostly from Texas designers — including jewelry from Olivia k, f. is for Frank and Bosquez Jewelry; art prints; leather goods; and wood crafts. She knows a lot of the designers personally, but, more important, “The common thread is that everything [at Wigwam] is thoughtfully designed.
“It all has an organic feel, which is something that I'm drawn to,” she says.
Because Wigwam will only be open for four days, Pearson and Saldivar were thoughtful about how much inventory they ordered.
“There are a lot of one-of-a-kind items,” Pearson says. “We’ll probably sell out early on Sunday.”
