About a year ago, siblings Aaron and Adora Cheung were working on a software start-up when they realized their San Francisco apartment needed a little cleanup. But there was not a way to book a trustworthy and affordable cleaning service online. So they quickly switched entrepreneurial gears.
The Cheungs didn’t steer far from their original plan. With the help of some techy friends, they built a website that acts as an online platform to match homes with professional cleaning services and named it Homejoy. In just a few clicks, homeowners and apartment dwellers can get the cleaning services they need at an affordable price. And the service is now available in Dallas.
The folks at Homejoy do the dirty work of screening the independent workers and running background checks, as well as providing insurance. The team at the San Francisco-based headquarters and city operations managers in every market do the recruiting.
All that’s left for you to do is visit the website and enter the number of bedrooms and bathrooms and square footage to get the estimate started. Then you type in your address, select the extras (laundry, inside refrigerator, inside ovens, inside cabinets, interior windows, interior walls), and add any special requests.
There’s a $20 flat fee per hour, with a two and a half hour minimum. There is also a $5 cleaning supply fee, unless you want the housekeepers to use your products.
Upon completing your reservation, you receive an email with additional information and a photo of your housekeeper so you know whom to expect at the door. All of the cleaners speak English and often wear the Homejoy tee to work.
Since the launch, in addition to Dallas, Homejoy has spread to 11 other cities outside of its San Francisco base, including New York, Boston, D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, Seattle, Miami and Houston.
