This Week in Gluttony
Klyde Warren Park food truck fest tops best food and drink events in Dallas
It’s a quiet week in food events. Apparently for most people, celebrating America is a weeklong endeavor — to which we say, celebrating America is an everyday habit. These colors don’t run.
For those looking around, there are some tasty weekend activities, including a Dishcrawl at Klyde Warren Park and the most glorious of corndog-eating contests.
Tuesday, July 2
“Rusty Taco” Fundraiser at Velvet Taco
Rusty Taco’s Russell “Rusty” Fenton lost his battle with cancer last week. In his honor, for this week, Velvet Taco’s WTF taco — with slow-roasted achiote pork shoulder, avocado crema, grilled pineapple, queso fresco, cilantro and pickled red onions — has been dubbed the “Rusty Taco.” Proceeds from sales go to the educational trust fund that’s been set up for Fenton's daughters. The taco is available through Sunday, July 7.

Fifth Annual Brass Knuckles Corndog Beatdown at Libertine Bar
Corndogs, man. They’re American as hell, and we can even kind of claim them as a Dallas creation thanks to Fletchers. The Libertine Bar throws a corndog-eating contest on the Fourth, complete with a Brass Knuckles trophy for whoever downs the most in 15 minutes. Third place gets $25 in quarters, which is awesome; if there’s a tie, then they’ll do a tequila shoot-out to break it, which is even more awesome. The bar opens at 11 am with a dunk tank, and the contest begins at 7 pm if you want to see the carnage.
Saturday, July 6
Very Berry Cooking Class at Central Market Plano
Fresh berries are a staple of the summer, but you know what’s even better than a berry on its own? Putting it in a pastry. It’s science. From 10 am-12:30 pm, Central Market Plano shows how to make some staples like raspberry tarts and strawberry-oatmeal scones for those looking to up their baking skills. Seats are $55 and can be reserved on the CM Plano cooking school site.
Wine Tasting at Domaine Wine Company
Chef Shaun Collins and Domaine host a third complimentary food and wine tasting with pairings that include avocado crab salad with citrus vinaigrette and Domaine de Mourchon Rosé Seguret 2012, and cherry tomato and bocconcini tartlets with Petit Henri Pinot Noir 2011. The tasting runs from 3 to 5 pm.

Dishcrawl Invades Klyde Warren Park
Dishcrawl takes the action to Klyde Warren Park for a food truck bonanza plus scavenger hunt beginning at 5 pm. As always, the actual food is kept secret until you sign up, but considering the array of food trucks normally at the park, you should find something that whets your appetite. Tickets are $39.
