Uptown Dallas foodies have it good with 2 new market openings
Two hipster markets debut in or near Uptown Dallas the same week: one a beloved local name, the other a small chain making a comeback.
Berkley’s Market, the locally-owned market concept selling gourmet goods, prepared foods, wine, craft beer, and coffee, has opened in the State Thomas neighborhood at 2822 McKinney Ave.
Foxtrot, the café and corner store that closed abruptly last April, is being revived by its co-founders, and will reopen its first Dallas location at 3130 Knox St. on January 17.
While the two stores are not identical, they are surely angling for the same customer.
Berkley's Market
This new Uptown location takes over a former Foxtrot space, spanning 4,100 square feet, with indoor seating and outdoor patio.
“We’re all about creating a neighborhood hub where convenience meets community,” says Berkley’s Market founder Zac Porter in a statement. “In State Thomas and across Dallas, we aim to be the place where locals can start their day with a great coffee, grab a quick and delicious bite, stock their shelves with essentials, or unwind with a glass of wine. We’re excited to bring everything our customers need under one roof, right in the heart of the neighborhoods we love to serve.”
This location also serves as a test kitchen, where new prepared food offerings will be developed and piloted. Guests will get exclusive access to the latest culinary creations before they roll out to other Berkley’s locations which are at 3300 Knox St. and 2001 Ross Ave. in the Arts District.
“We’re going all in on our prepared foods and continuing with our fantastic coffee program here,” Porter added. “Our partnership with La Colombe for coffee, paired with local pastries from La Casita and Shug’s bagels, ensures top-tier quality and hopefully everyone’s favorites. We’re hopeful this location will quickly become a favorite for our State Thomas neighbors.”
The coffee menu includes cortados, cappuccinos, macchiatos, drip coffee, cold brew, and mochas. Treats include Berkley’s Nutella Rice Krispie Treat, house-made overnight oats, Berkley’s breakfast tacos, and La Casita cruffins and croissants.
Lunch and dinner items for dining in or grab-and-go include Reuben Panini, Cowboy Roast Beef Panini, Tarragon Chicken Salad Sandwich, Turkey Wrap, Salmon Caesar Salad, Cobb Salad, Roast Turkey with mashed potatoes and green beans, and Grilled Salmon with grilled vegetable and broccoli.
Berkley’s Market also sells groceries, beer, wine, and prepared foods, plus up-and-coming brands from local businesses including Four Corners Brewing Co., Milk & Patience Yogurt, Jeni’s Ice Cream, Everit & Ellaine baked goods, Siete, Yellowbird Salsa, Stocks & Bondy Soup and more.
Foxtrot Café & Market
Foxtrot is the Chicago-based coffee and upscale convenience chain. They serve coffee, grab-and-go meals, and grocery items. In Dallas, they're featuring a cafe menu with breakfast, lunch, and afternoon offerings: Breakfast tacos in options such as borracho bean, brisket guisado, and grilled veggie; panini sandwiches, salads, bowls, and cookies.
Coffee service will feature blends as The Milk Man Blend and Early Train Espresso, with retail bean and CPG selections from local Dallas and Texas based roasters and partners. The stores will also bring back their popular gummies and gummy mixes.
