    City of Richardson lures in craft beer brewer and Mexican restaurant

    Richardsonwill soon be home to two new food & beverage venues, one serving craft beer, the other Mexican food. According to a release, Oak Highlands Brewery and Las Lomas Mexican Cuisine will join The Core District, the area around Main Street that includes Richardson's Downtown, Heights, Interurban, Lockwood, and Chinatown neighborhoods.

    Both venues will open in the Lockwood area, and will be managed by Durkin Properties, an investor in The Core District.

    “The addition of these two new businesses brings an exciting energy to the Lockwood Neighborhood in The Core District,” said Richardson City Manager Don Magner. “These eclectic spots will add to the ambiance that makes this area so special, with creative menus, cozy atmospheres full of personality, and a strong connection to the local community."

    The Lockwood neighborhood has already attracted variety of dining options, co-working space, and Richardson's only distillery.

    "As The Core District’s reputation for unique dining and entertainment experiences grows, interest increases as businesses seek dynamic, authentic environments for their locations,” sayes Durkin Properties president Manasseh Durkin. "This is particularly true of local small business operators who benefit from the regional draw of this area and its mix of restaurants and retailers."

    Oak Highlands Brewery is relocating its taproom and production facility from Lake Highlands to 500 Lockwood Dr. in Richardson, IE the former Happy Hippie space. The new location will allow the brewery to broaden its offering to taproom and event space. They'll open in late spring.

    The brewery offered a statement, saying that after "an amazing ten years in the Lake Highlands area, this opportunity allows OHB to move from an industrial park into a high-traffic retail area that is still a convenient drive for our loyal, beer enthusiasts while also creating outstanding exposure to the DFW area at our new location. The new location will allow Oak Highlands Brewery to expand on the events everyone already enjoys: live music, food events and competitions, private parties, dog rescue fundraisers, along with our calendar of weekly events like trivia and music bingo."

    Las Lomas Mexican Cuisine is a new family-owned restaurant opening at 520 Lockwood, offering Mexican food and live entertainment including mariachi and regional music. Las Lomas also plans to host themed cultural events such as Dia de los Muertos and Mexican Independence Day. Their cuisine will feature signature tacos, regional specialties, delicious desserts, handcrafted cocktails and drinks. The restaurant will also offer catering and delivery services.

    They'll join already-open venues such as Communion Coffee Cafe, which offers coffee, breakfast, lunch, and serves as a co-working space; Dream Cafe, a spinoff of the beloved healthy restaurant in Uptown Dallas; Lockwood Distillery, which serves lunch, dinner, and brunch with a Southern comfort-food spin.

    Le French Kebab brings Indian-Arabic street food to downtown Dallas

    A new restaurant has debuted in downtown Dallas with an international pedigree: Called Le French Kebab, it's a halal restaurant that recently opened at 701 Commerce St. #120, across from the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza in the former Chimalma Taco Bar Co. space, where it's serving kebabs and pita sandwiches.

    Le French is from brothers Noman and Farhan Nawaz, who operate several restaurants in Paris, including their flagship, Mayfair Garden, located blocks from the Eiffel Tower. At Le French, they're drawing inspiration from Parisian kebab kiosks, while adding a Mediterranean-Indian-Arabic twist.

    The brothers came to Dallas for its business-friendly climate and quality of life.

    "Texas laws and taxes really favor business owners, while Paris is more supportive of labor unions," Noman says. "It’s a complicated system for small investors to have more than two restaurants in France. Plus, Plano and Frisco are great places to raise a family."

    They've given the space a beckoning atmosphere by turning the front sidewalk into an airy patio with strung lights. Diners are greeted with a complimentary cup of cardamom tea, a symbol of hospitality and warmth.

    Noman, who serves as head chef, says that he trained under Michelin-starred chefs in France and further refined his craft in London. He's applying those culinary techniques to a menu that combines Indian, Pakistani, and Mediterranean food.

    The current menu is compact, with pita sandwiches and platters, starting at $10 for a French kebab sandwich with chicken gyro meat, and topping out at $16 for Shahi Dali, a platter with lentils and rice. Starters include hummus, truffle fries, and falafel chaat, a street-food style snack featuring falafel with chutney, cabbage, red bell pepper, and garnishes with elements of tangy, spicy, and sweet.

    Everything pops with color and brightness, especially the signature mint-and-coriander green chutney, served with the gyros and chicken tikka.

    Le French Kebab also does an intriguing variety of desserts including jewel-like Turkish delights, baklava, and kunafa, a rich offering made from shredded phyllo dough, cheese, and pistachios.

    The brothers hope to expand the menu and dishes are still being tweaked for Texas customers, who like more spice than diners in Europe, Noman says.

    "Doner kebab in France only has salt, but here, people like more flavor," he says. "We’re still learning the audience, and they’re learning us."
